Maybe not the whole song, just a line here or there. What are your favorites?

Well, here's a favorite, from Love Minus Zero/No Limit, Bob Dylan:-

"In the dime stores and bus stations
People talk of situations
Read books, repeat quotations
Draw conclusions on the wall
Some speak of the future
My love she speaks softly
She knows there's no success like failure
And that failure's no success at all"

And just to reveal my sentimental side, also by Bob Dylan, a verse from "Tempest" (a song about the sinking of the Titanic):-

"Jim Dandy smiled
He never learned to swim
Saw the little crippled child
And he gave his seat to him"

I love how it jumps some 5 thousand years in one line.

You wake up in the morning, get something for the pot
Wonder why the sun makes the rocks feel hot
Draw on the walls, eat, get laid
Back in the good old days

Then some damn fool invents the wheel
Listen to the whitewalls squeal
You spend all day looking for a parking spot
Nothing for the heart, nothing for the pot

I am a massive fan of Tori Amos. I love all her lyrics and find many deeply meaningful.

Especially love this: Girl Disappearing (from the album 'American Doll Posse'

7 am
So it begins again
1-0 (zip) favoring familiar silhouettes
Left whips and chains
Behind I'm boycotting trends
It's my new look this season

Riding on backs of palominos
Primed for an attack
It's as good
As good as it gets
With girl disappearing
What on earth's occurring?
'cause she's right in front of me

A girl disappearing
To some secret prison
Behind her eyes she whispers
"Big surprise there was
No protection by this urban light
So I'm running to
A constellation
Where they can still see you"

Envy can spread
Herself so thinly
She slipped in
Before I could notice it

In my own war
Blood in the cherry zone
When they
pit woman against feminist

Riding on backs of palominos
Ditching the blond shell
Working her hell
On that red carpet

With girl disappearing
What on earth's occurring?
'cause she's right in front of me

A girl disappearing
To some secret prison
But she's right in front of me
A girl disappearing
To some secret prison
Behind her eyes she whispers
"Big surprise there was
No protection by this urban light
So I'm running to
A constellation

Where they can still see you"
Then I'm running too
If that's a consolation

'cause I can still see you

When I listen to this song, I think of the Paris Hilton type, representing what the world is interested right now in the news. How this girl is working the red carpet, but deep down her soul and body are disappearing slowly. I know that Tori wrote this song before Paris went to prison, but the line, "a girl disappearing to some secret prison," reminds me how she was punished. The line, "ditching the bombshell" prompts me to think of how our media portrays thin as being beautiful.

But as I say, the song was written before Paris Hilton was jailed so obviously Tori wasn't writing about her... I just made that comparison after the event.

There is so much in this song. It's got elements of anorexia: the "secret prison" could possibly refer to the girl's personal punishment of her body for not fitting into the goddess shape. Because the constellations are of gods and goddesses, or very thin fashion victims who are put up on a pedestal.

Anorexia would also fit because the preceding track on the album is "Fat Slut".

It could be about a girl who's got a lot of bad things going on around her. But she's lost the will or the want to fight to get those things right. So she ends up feeling like she's losing herself or her identity to these bad things. That makes her the Girl Disappearing.

She could be talking about the kind of women that are the reason we're still not equal and feminism is still important. The "secret prison" is society's expectations of women and this song is about the women that give into them. She's saying we shouldn't.

"In my own war
Blood in the cherry zone
when they
pit woman against feminist"

She's saying some women are their own enemies by giving into what society wants. I think of Pink's "Stupid Girls" in relation to this...

And this is the great thing about Tori. Her songwriting challenges the listener to figure out what it's all about. I could listen to her songs all day. My head would be all over the place at the end of it, but I sure as hell wouldn't be tired of her. She's undoubtedly the best conceptual lyricist of the age.

I like both pink and tori too.

Lately I’ve been completely channeling Hamilton. I referenced lyric in answering a patron question to day.

One of my favorite lyrics is a song that is really creepy af, but

How I wish you could see the potential
The potential of you and me
It's like a book elegantly bound
But in a language that you can't read just yet…

It’s my love of books and always looking at the potential of something though. The actual song not so much.

I tend to have a lot of phrases that I really like. I’m not really big into written poetry, but I do respond to spoken word and song lyrics. I think it’s something about how I read, I can’t hear the beauty in poetry on the page...it’s a disjointed picture in my brain compared to prose.

Still one of my favorites, the opening lines of "Anthem" by Leonard Cohen..

The birds they sang
At the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
Has passed away
Or what is yet to be
Yeah the wars they will
Be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
Bought and sold
And bought again
The dove is never free

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in

More from Bob Dylan, lines from "Thunder on the Mountain":-

I got the pork chops, she got the pie
She ain't no angel and neither am I
Shame on your greed, shame on your wicked schemes
I'll say this, I don't give a damn about your dreams

Good thread, Dookie. It's nice to be able to 'open up' about ourselves a little. It shows that we're humans and not just a bunch of opinions.

Sometimes, song lyrics can be applied to emotions or situations that they were never intended for by the artist (or may have been, but it was never apparent at the time).

In the LGBT community, it's often the case that an individual will assign a particular song to their experience of their first realisation that they're gay, or coming out of the closet or some other relatively meaningful experience. The reason for this may be intensely personal to the individual and mean something only to them. Regardless of the specific occasion, they're always known as "Coming Out Songs." I have two.

The first came about when I started dating a classmate at school. (Her gaydar worked me out). We were both 14 at the time. How we kept it secret for two years in an all-girl school is a miracle of subterfuge worthy of a John le Carre novel. But we did. Then, on the radio in the kitchen at home one afternoon, a song was played and the lyric mainlined right into my consciousness.

It cemented in my mind the attitude I became determined that I'd take if we ever were found out. You can't imagine how incredibly empowering that felt to a very scared 14 year old at that time.

THEY DON'T KNOW (Kirsty MacColl)

You've been around for such a long time now
Oh Maybe I could leave you but I don't know how
And why should I be lonely every night
When I can be with you
Oh yes You make it right

And I don't listen to the guys who say
that you're bad for me And I should turn you away
'Cause they don't know about us
And they've never heard of love

I get a feeling when I look at you
wherever you go now I want to be there too
They say we're crazy but I just don't care
And if they keep on talking still they get nowhere
So I don't mind if they don't understand
When I look at you and you hold my hand

'Cause they don't know about us
And they've never heard of love
Why should it matter to us if they don't approve?
We should just take our chances
while we've got nothing to lose
Baby

There's no need for living in the past
Now I've found good loving gonna make it last
I tell the others don't bother me
'Cause when they look at you
They don't see what I see

So I don't listen to their wasted lines
Got my eyes wide open and I see the signs
'Cause they don't know about us
and they've never heard of love

Sarah and I broke up when I stayed on at the school to do Sixth Form and she went to take her A Levels at a different college. It had run its course and we parted amicably. We're still in touch via Facebook. We both attended each other's weddings. She's living in Manchester now and her wife had a little boy a couple of years ago. Life has been good to us.

On her hen night party we sang They Don't Know as a karaoke duet. I must admit, my voice wobbled a little and I got a bit sappy at the end. Silly cow, Jenny..!!

Second coming out song really was the song I attached to my Coming Out. I had just turned 19 and was at university by this time. I just got tired of living a lie and I figured if I couldn't come out in a liberal environment like a university campus I couldn't do it anywhere.

So I took a deep breath and told the two girls I was sharing digs with that I had something they needed to know. Shortly afterwards I heard this, again, on the radio. Again it zeroed right in on my consciousness. The words told it like it was:

GEORGIE GIRL (The Seekers)

Hey there, Georgie girl
Swinging down the street so fancy-free
Nobody you meet could ever see the loneliness there inside you

Hey there, Georgie girl
Why do all the boys just pass you by?
Could it be you just don't try or is it the clothes you wear?
You're always window shopping but never stopping to buy
So shed those dowdy feathers and fly a little bit

Hey there, Georgie girl
There's another Georgie deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see a new Georgie girl

Hey there, Georgie girl
Dreaming of the someone you could be
Life is a reality, you can't always run away
Don't be so scared of changing and rearranging yourself
It's time for jumping down from the shelf a little bit

Hey there, Georgie girl
There's another Georgie deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see a new Georgie girl

Wake up, Georgie girl

Come on*, Georgie girl

Wake up, Georgie girl

*to me it sounded like Judith Durham was singing "Come Out Georgie Girl". It was like getting some sort of sonic message on the radio.

"American Tune" by Paul Simon....

"And I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
or driven to its knees
But it's all right, it's all right
We've lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road
we're traveling on
I wonder what went wrong
I can't help it, I wonder what went wrong"

A good rendition of it here.....

I hear ya!

I sometimes find that the "Wohm, wohm, wohm, wohm
Wohm, wohm, wohm, wohm, wohm
Wohm" from Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talkin'" often does it for me.

Randy Newman, "I Think It's Going To Rain Today"

Broken windows and empty hallways
A pale dead moon in the sky streaked with gray
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today

Scarecrows dressed in the latest styles
With frozen smiles to chase love away
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today

Lonely, lonely
Tin can at my feet
Think I'll kick it down the street
That's the way to treat a friend

Bright before me the signs implore me
To help the needy and show them the way
Human kindness is overflowing
And I think it's going to rain today
