Anyone here into comic books? I recently downloaded a comic book version of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (Hunter S Thompson) and it's rather good. With the added advantage that being on Kindle no one can actually tell that it's a comic book......and might well think I'm reading "War and Peace" or some other deep tome.

the comic book version more like a graphic novel. since the late 70's, comic books slow turning into graphic novels. from the 60's to 80's. marvel comic books are artistic work is better than late 80's to present. because of the genius of jack kirby artistic work.

" fear and loathing in las vegas " , i was surprise it was made into tv version. a graphic novel - you have the artist drawings that illusions of the novel make it pretty cool to read.

now, " war and peace ' that novel has be 1200 pages just hardback. i have seen the movie, it is 5 1/2 hours with no commercials. the movie is pretty good and pretty boring. i fell sleep through a couple of time watching it. make illustrations will the story go faster to read in a graphic novel. maybe?

I have seen a BBC adaptation, I think about 18 one hour episodes. The number of pictures = the story goes faster?

Yes, "cool". I don't think I would manage reading the book. I don't usually get on with most "modern" novels. I do like the artwork in my Kindle edition. A few books have been issued on Kindle where the text is interspersed with graphics that actually move. "Dracula" and "Journey to the Centre of the Earth". Quite good.

I remember some of the old comic books. More the text, strangely. From the USA. Not sure if Jack Kirby was involved. Loved some of the wording, especially in the mafia/crime type comic, with the word "gatt" instead of gun. Always made my brother and I laugh....... "Yer fink you're a big man, just cos you got a gatt." Yes, made us laugh! Whether or not the intended morality lesson ever got through, I'm not so sure.

Just remembered the old saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words". Looking it up, War and Peace has 587,287 words. So it would take just 587 pictures!

" gatt " sound a money like nickle or a buck. 20 to 50's , mafia/crime type would talk that way. in dc and marvel comic books, the words like " pow " "bang " and "wow" to describing action noise in fighting comic books. you see this in the old classic tv show, " batman ". " the tv show, " the untouchables ". you learn what words that the gangsters said back then.

dc tried in pretty much lame way show their moral lessons that do a bad job from 40's to 70's in batman and superman comic books. in 60's, you read the marvel's first 20 issues of " the amazing spider-man " written by stan lee and the artwork of jack kirby. they do a brilliant job of moral issues of spider-man and well as, peter parker.

Ralph Steadman did the artwork. Steadman illustrated a version of Alice In Wonderland.

Awhile back I downloaded a "Graphic Novel" to Kindle, and it was difficult to read. It was not much more than images of the full pages. I had to zoom in to read each frame, and it just got clumsy.

Then recently, I borrowed "Locke and Key" - I didn't know it was a graphic novel, but it was done very differently, and very well.
You can set it to "Frame Mode" and you can go through it frame-by-frame, or you can "zoom out" and get the whole page view.

.. which reminds me - I think I started watching the Netflix (?) series, but I forget it I finished it

.. but I'm typically not a comic book reader.

With that said, as a Stephen King fan (author of Locke and Key is Joe Hill - SK's son) I do have the set of 5 GN (hardbound) of The Dark Tower - Beginnings.
In pristine (aka unread) condition

Just downloaded a Batman comic book. I read a sample and the dialogue boxes are brilliant! Artwork is by various people, but very striking.

Light relief!

i used read batman from the 60's to 90's, i stopped at 501 issue. because the storyline really getting stupid storylines. the fat that d.c. really went up with the cost of a comic book was way overprice for one comic book.

i stopped reading superman in 80's, when his weakness not including kryptonite, but, magic, as well. then the storylines got really stupid.

back then, the biggest problems that i had with dc superheroes, were the hero without the mask. for years, i never know who was clark and bruce really was. over the years, i stopped caring. it seem that dc don't how developed their characters like marvel does.

The Batman I'm reading (or looking at) is of some of the old stories. Some great dialogue - I assume USA street talk. Less refined than that of upstanding English gentlemen like myself.

"Took a dozen of them mules to yank me offa that mook......another thirty seconds and I'dda put him on a slab." Some here might be able to translate. Great stuff!

that probably late 30's to 60's comic book's version. with dialog that weren't great to read, as well, storylines were lame and pretty corny. no substance in storyline.
