Did Yahweh do us a favor by denying us eternal life?

It seems that the older I get, the less enjoyable and desirable the thought of living eternally becomes, even though I am quite pleased with how my life has evolved and how I will end this life.

Be it with a body here on earth, or as a spirit in some heaven, I cannot imagine anyone living eternally and enjoying it.

It would be like living watching the same T V program running over and over and over, since there is nothing new under the sun. All would be seen as allegories and or analogous of other situations.

Thoughts?

The idea of eternal life is stupid.

The idea of heaven is also stupid.

Both are actually hell.

Infinite duration for ANY "self", however conceived, would be hell. As chaski recognises, even being permanently up his tree observing the movements of......

It's why the anatta (not self) teaching in Buddhism is a good starting point.

Also, I would say that eternity can be understood as infinite duration or, as with the mystics, as NOW.

(In Buddhism, both eternalism AND annihilationism are rejected)

There is an old story.....

A guy dies and finds himself in a luxurious mansion, waited upon night and day. Yet after a while it all palls just a bit and he asks the waiter for some sort of job to occupy him. "That is the one thing I am unable to provide" he is told. "Then I might as well be in hell" he answers, and the waiter says, "Where do you think you are then?"

A Buddhist Lama has said that the only extension to the present is intensity. As I see it, time not as endless continuation, full of anticipations and epitaphs, but of actually living NOW. "Desire" for more is from the Buddhist perspective the beginning of "suffering".

During Lockdown over here I can honestly say that I have never been bored. Anxious? Yes. Pissed off with others? Yes. Judgemental of others? Yes. Slight panic attacks? Yes. Accomodating my normal levels of conceit? Yes. Angry? Yes. But bored? No.

If I have anticipated, it has been to look forward to such things as the next words of grandchildren, to see their faces again. Maybe some would argue that the simple words of a child are not to be compared to on-going revelations of Jesus Christ revealed each morning as we wake in heaven, but as I understand the Christian way, such would be to "spit in the face of Christ". Take that as you wish.

This moment, without wish for more and - in my Pure Land way - giving thanks, is enough.

Resurrection

"Is it true that after this life of ours we shall one day be awakened
by a terrifying clamour of trumpets?
Forgive me God, but I console myself
that the beginning and resurrection of all of us dead
will simply be announced by the crowing of the cock.

After that we'll remain lying down a while...
The first to get up
will be Mother...We'll hear her
quietly laying the fire,
quietly putting the kettle on the stove
and cosily taking the teapot out of the cupboard.
We'll be home once more."

But now you know without a shadow of a doubt that heaven cannot be reduced to just a nice place. No straw man arguments needed or given.

i always thing of one of the best episode of the twilight zone series. in " a nice place to visit ". after watching this episode, you wonder if god has a sense of humor?

a nice place to visit:

Portrait of a man at work, the only work he's ever done, the only work he knows. His name is Henry Francis Valentine, but he calls himself "Rocky", because that's the way his life has been – rocky and perilous and uphill at a dead run all the way. He's tired now, tired of running or wanting, of waiting for the breaks that come to others but never to him, never to Rocky Valentine. A scared, angry little man. He thinks it's all over now but he's wrong. For Rocky Valentine, it's just the beginning.

Hey, you intrigued me with the build up..........then the video was "unavailable"!!

The build up did make me think of a Chuang Tzu story, "Flight from the shadow:-

"There was a man who was so disturbed by the sight of his own shadow and so displeased with his own footsteps that he determined to get rid of both. The method he hit upon was to run away from them. So he got up and ran. But every time he put his foot down there was another step, while his shadow kept up with him without the slightest difficulty. He attributed his failure to the fact that he was not running fast enough. So he ran faster and faster, without stopping, until he finally dropped dead. He failed to realize that if he merely stepped into the shade, his shadow would vanish, and if he sat down and stayed still, there would be no more footsteps."

Not to me as Gnostic Christianity posits that heaven is here and now.

This goes well with the reality that we live in the best of all possible world, given our history, because it is the only possible world.

Here and now is therefore perfect for us and thus heaven.
