Britons Refused Job Interviews In Europe

This comes as no surprise to me.

Remainers were saying from day one that this would happen and were accused of scaremongering. Now 1.2 million British expats currently inside the EU are being turned down for interviews for jobs as more and more employers state specifically that they will only hire workers who are able to travel freely within the EU.

Britons currently in the EU fulfil that criteria due to the transition arrangements, but it is now clear and obvious to everybody that the British government has no intention whatsoever of seriously pursuing a trade deal with the EU (and in my opinion, they never did have from day one), employers within the EU are giving up on British workers.

Whilst some ex-pats will retain certain rights within the country they are resident in, they will not be able to travel freely outside of that country. They will have no EU-wide rights. This makes the wording of job applications very specific. "Must be able to travel freely within the European Union".

The EU are also looking at British qualifications for studying within the EU. This could have a detrimental effect on the ability of students to travel outside of UK after the transition ends.

An estimated 1.2 million British expats could be affected and although some of those are retired, around 60% are actively working, seeking work or studying.

This begs the question. How many of those ex-pats are going to have to return to the UK, out of work, some with no homes to live in, and will be dependent on state benefits the moment they get off the boat in Dover. They will bring their families with them and will obviously be entitled to health care, places for their kids in schools, housing, etc.

Will those Britons be called "Benefit Scroungers" too...?

Americans are being refused entry to various countries.

And while there is a legitimate reason for this, it has hurt a few of my friends... I blame my government.

What truly puzzles me is the meek acceptance of this by the British public.

We were told over and over that nothing would change... that we could leave the EU and it would have no effect on us at all. The EU would cave in to all British demands and life would go on seamlessly.

But as this door is being slammed in our face, it's becoming clear that all forms of travel to Europe are going to become more difficult. For tourists, the amount of documentation needed are take a car across the Channel will multiply like bacteria and even our pet passports won't be valid.... Taking doggie abroad will require a lot of shots... at great expense, immunity certificates, etc. And different ones for each country we visit.

Travel is going to become extremely difficult and yet so far it's all being met with a shrug. These things have not actually happened yet and we still get the same message from Johnson and his crew: "The EU will back down at the last minute because they need us more than we need them."

This government has an appalling record of failure, broken promises, lies and deceit and yet it's every word is still being believed without question.

It's utterly mystifying how they get away with it.

I suspect it's the restaurant owners who have decided to install do-it-yourself kiosks. If you enter the McDonald's you can go to a part of the building near the place where you order food and simply type in your order without the benefit of speaking to an actual person. At the end of the day the restaurant saves on costs of hiring a person to put your order in to the system but now all you do is hit a touch panel and order all of your tacos or fish and chips or random thing at the register and then somebody from the back of the house will kindly make your food and of course that's most likely a real person unless you have a robot flipping the burger which I don't think is very common just yet.

No, these are what we'd call bona-fide "jobs". Builders, bricklayers, plumbers and various other tradesmen at one end of the scale, and at the higher end, technicians, scientists, engineers and so on.

This has been going on in an 'unofficial' sort of way for a while now, mostly due to the uncertainty that Brexit has caused......

Britons CV's Go Bottom Of The Pile

..... but now it's being made more 'official' because it's becoming increasingly clear now that there is unlikely to be any sort of trade deal between UK and EU at all, let alone one that will facilitate Britons being able to move freely on the continent.

Job vacancies are carrying the caveat that applicants must have the right of freedom of movement within the EU.

Johnson may (falsly) deny that Britain is pulling up the drawbridge to Europe, but if he isn't (he is), then the Europeans are going to do it for us. We've made lepers of ourselves and they're not going to encourage us out of the leper colony.

PS
CV stands for "Curriculum Vitae". You call it a resume.

"In the Brexit referendum of 2016, 73 percent of people aged between 18 and 24 voted to remain in the European Union, compared with just 40 percent of people aged over 65. In fact, the propensity to vote leave increases with age, with the three oldest age groups here voting leave and the three youngest voting to remain" (From an official statistics site)

As I see it, such statistics relate to this. It would be mainly the younger generations seeking to spread their wings.

That is up to employers in the EU who they hire.
If they think they can get the best by excluding British workers then good luck to them. But they can't force us to abandon democracy.
You might not agree with it, but it's what the majority voted for.

"Abandon democracy"?

Did British democracy begin and end on 23rd June 2016? When a Referendum was held, which according to the British Constitution, could only be "advisory only" irrespective of what was said at the time.

Since when, in the GE last December, the majority voted for Parties offering Re-Negotiation of Terms of Withdrawal and/or a second referendum.

Yet here we are approaching a No-Deal Brexit which was NEVER voted for and which Polls indicate is unwanted by a large majority.

Nobody is saying that democracy is being abandoned, and Dookie has answered that point quite eloquently. He's absolutely right.

And yes, the EU countries can hire anybody they like. Their action is entirely legal and morally sound.

But were the British people told that this was a likelihood at the time of the referendum..? Actually, they were. There were many instances of the remain campaign saying that this is exactly the sort of thing that would happen, but it was rebuffed with the slogan "Project Fear." And the British people lapped it up.

There are around 1.6 million Britons living in the 27 EU countries. Some (mostly in Spain) are retired, but around half of that 1.6 million are working. Where are they going to go if they lose their jobs..? They will no longer qualify for any state benefits in the country where they are. They'll have no access to medical care. Their children won't be able to attend local schools. They won't be able to pay their rent, buy food or clothes.

Where are they going to go..?

They'll have little option but to come back to UK, a country already struggling more than most with the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Brexit hasn't kicked in yet. That is only going to make things worse and if another 800'000 people have to come back to UK, without jobs and no home to come back to, they are going to become a massive burden on an already overloaded welfare state.

Democracy is a wonderful thing, but it isn't going to mean much to them when they've had to give up probably a well paid job and lose a comfortable lifestyle, to find themselves living wherever they can, and eating from food banks.

Can't happen...? Oh yes it can.

Your argument presumes that the referendum result was absolute and binding, but it wasn't. Indeed, before the vote, Nigel Farage said on the BBC: "If this finishes in a 52-48% split, it won't be the end of the matter by a long chalk" His meaning was quite clear. If the result was a close vote for remain he would carry on regardless. He would have wanted a second referendum.

As it turns out, 52% - 48% was exactly the split.... only it was for leave, not remain. All of a sudden, it was the end of the matter. By absolutely no chalk at all. All of a sudden, the result was "democratic" and had to be obeyed at all costs.

There was no legal or moral impediment to a second referendum, and all through last Autumn, every poll and survey showed that a majority of the public - most having had their eyes opened to the truth - wanted one.

But here we are. And now, 1.6 million Britons face an uncertain and possibly very bleak future.

If you can tell me a benefit of Brexit that has happened by now... some four years after we were supposed to obtain the "easiest trade deal in history", I'd like to know what it is.

What have we had so far out of Brexit that makes it all worthwhile...?

Can you enlighten us..?

Angela Merkel Warns "Britain Will Have To Live With The Consequences of Brexit"

Rather than 'caving in at the last minute' as Boris Johnson keeps repeatedly telling the British public that that is what the EU will do, the German Chancellor has hardened her line.

Jewellery...?

It's a fascinating comment and I remember doing similar things when I was a child too. It was fun to sit on the floor with my friends, putting beads on a length of string and making ourselves 'pretty'. It's nice to see that you do the same thing with your friends when they come to your house for tea after school.

But I don't quite see what it's got to do with the subject matter.

Then thank you for wasting your own time on an utterly pointless comment. Now, if you'll please stop spamming the thread, the grown ups might like to be able to discuss the subject matter.

In legible, readable English.
