Does anyone know where I might get some minerals and fertilizer? Just point me to a website or two, maybe out of state, might be cheaper.

There is a cardinal building a nest in our burning bush outside the front window.

I hope they're not as protective/aggressive as blue jays.

You have a burning bush? Does the M in your name stand for Moses?

Got some Cukes last week - "Quick Pickles" and a great homemade Tziki-type sauce (that I use more often as chip-dip)

We've got cherry tomatoes from the indoor/hydroponic Aerogrow (see above)

I saw one of the preying mantis yesterday - about an inch long!

And I found a "Parsley Worm"! - aka swallowtail butterfly caterpillar

(not my pic)

So I really like this indoor gardening thing. I didn’t have a huge yield, but considering literally everything I’ve tried before died, any yield is an improvement.

Oddly enough the kale that I dropped several times is doing the best.

I got more seeds and and several more herb plants. So I’ve made a few salads of mostly stuff I grew. Which is good because I mostly grew beet and radish tops. Lol. Didn’t thin well enough.

I also bought catnip seeds and cat grass. My kitty girl, personal assistant seems to like the plants but she’s also an a*****e, so I don’t know if she will let the catnip actually grow.
When I’m ignoring her and she wants to be petted, she walked up to my radish plant by the bed (where I have my wfh set up and my biggest and favorite. I did get som radishes from that pot.) eats a leaf while staring me in the eye daring me to say something. All the while making damn this radish is spicy faces while going “nom, nom, nom” She will not stop loudly eating a salad until I pet her

Well, that was cool.

While out watering the garden this evening, a hummingbird came in and started drinking from the spray. It did this for a few minutes - at one point it started following the flow upstream until it got about 3 feet from me!!
If it weren't for the sound of the spraying water, I bet I could've heard it's wings hum.

A few times it flew up to a nearby tree and sat for a bit, and came back for.
At one time it seemed to be pointing at the sunflowers saying "Water these more!" haha

I usually water around the same time each evening, so it would be cool if it learned that ...

And earlier today, and a few days prior, I saw a hummingbird moth poking around our flowers.

.. hey, when you're in the 'burbs, this stuff is exciting
(but not the damn deer poop in my back yard)

Holy Crap!!
European Hornets are huge!

I started seeing these big orange things flying about.
We have morning glories and sunflowers and other stuff around. So I'm always seeing bees - honey and the "bumble bees" (bigger black and yellow)
And an occasional bald face hornet.

But Damn! Those European hornets are Huge (I already said that .. didn't I)

They're feeding from our hummingbird feeder (overgrown with the morning glories). And I watched it attack a bald faced hornet.

I'm usually OK with bees and bugs as long as they keep their distance. But I'm afraid the hummingbird feeder has to go until those Europeans leave.

...OK, Huge for this suburbanite. I'm sure Chaski has seen bugs that could carry off small dogs.

...
This is also the time of year to be vigilant for yellow jacket nests/holes.

Eury found the apple tree and is munching an apple. I'll try to upload pics later.

Then I got my son to show him, and Eury was back at the hummingbird feeder. And as we were watching, a bald-faced hornet came up and Eury attacked him! Wrestled for a bit, fell to the ground, still fighting.
Then finally Eury picked up Baldy and flew off to the black walnut tree.

Taking him home for lunch I suppose! Hahaha!

Any day now I should see my clan of Junco's return

They usually show up around Thanksgiving, and stay until about Easter.

Oh that we were so lucky here. The avian life of Cornwall is red in beak and claw. No wonder Daphne du Maurier set "The Birds" in Cornwall.

Goshawks, kestrels, ospreys, owls of every variety, peregrine falcons and even golden eagles which had become pretty depleted until conservation measures stepped in. Now their numbers are increasing up on the high moors at Bodmin and other places.

Then there are the seabirds who aren't afraid to come into town. They'll swoop down on you in the high street if they see that you've got a snack they think they can steal. They can be quite intimidating. But that's mostly the gulls. We also have guillimots, gannets, cormorants, razorbills and puffins.

A colleague I used to work with at FSS put koi carp in his garden pond. Everybody warned him...... To be fair, he did put a mesh cover over the pond to protect them which somewhat took away from the aesthetic of the thing. Unfortunately, it wasn't strong enough and a skua had his fish. Those birds fear humans not. They'll dive bomb ya if they think you're drifting too close to their nesting place on the cliffs as you walk along.

But don't think I'm complaining. It's wonderful that we have such varied and proliferate bird life here. In London I only ever used to see the manky old lieutenant pigeons that the capital is known for. I can't ever remember seeing anything else. Perhaps the feral cats had got them all.
