In a move that has surprised nobody at all...........

Government Opens British Markets To Lower Food Standards

Daily Telegraph Article On The Same Subject

This is one of those things that people like me said would happen and the Brexiters called "Project Fear."

This is one of those wonderful things that, now we've left the evil EU we’re free to be told by the Americans what our food standards are going to be. No doubt that now we have our sovereignty back we'll be letting them to tell us to do other things that we're going to "decide for ourselves".

This government has absolutely no intention of doing a trade deal with the EU if it compromises any deal they’ll get with the US, and we, the British public will have to suffer the consequences of that.

Well done Brexiters and Tory voters, this is what you voted for. I hope you’re pleased with yourselves.

At least Coronavirus has meant the NHS can't be touched. At least for the time being. But we know it will be back on the agenda as soon as Dominic Cummings thinks it's politically safe to do so.

I'm sure that'll be called "Project Fear" too.

Daily Mail Article

Snip:

Ministers plot to allow chlorinated chicken and other poor-quality US imports in to UK supermarkets under 'dual tariff scheme' as they seek quick trade deal with Donald Trump Scheme would allow heavy duties on low-quality imports like chlorine chicken But better quality imports would face lighter duties if the US agreed to terms.

Trade Secretary Liz Truss wants a quick deal with the Trump administration

Ministers are planning to cave in to American pressures and allow chlorinated chicken and other low-quality imports on to UK supermarket shelves.

They are said to be seeking a 'dual tariff' scheme that would see little or no import duties placed on food and produce that meets current high UK standards, but slap hefty tolls on poor quality items.

It would allow things like the chemically treated poultry and hormone-fed beef to be imported to the UK but make them expensive and therefore make them less likely to appear.

Opening up the UK to US agri-business has been the main source of divergence between the US and UK over the post-Brexit agreement.

Strangely enough not one single Brexiter on the Daily Heil website has commented (at time of posting). I can't think why they would go so quiet. They had plenty to say before.

We told them and they laughed at us and shrugged it off. It's the same with Tariffs which are going to be imposed as well as customs on goods between UK and Northern Ireland.

All that we warned about is going to happen. It's just a matter of time.

How are guys about labeling food?

Make sure the products are clearly labeled "Chlorinated Chicken" and let the market decide!

Besides, isn't your healthcare free over there?

We do have food labelling, but mostly on identifying the salt content, saturated fats, energy values etc. Country of origin is not a required label and neither is the processing methods used.

The problem with this isn't just about whether or not chlorine wash is or isn't dangerous, it is important to our relationship with the EU.

Yep... there is a Brexit issue here.

This country desperately.... DESPERATELY needs some sort of trade agreement with the EU. A vast amount of our food produce is sold on the continent. Losing that would be disastrous to the economy.

Britain currently has very high food standards that are compatible with the EU market because, well, because we've been in the EU since 1973 and adopted their standards.

To take American food, Britain will have to dispose of many of the EU standards. Chlorine washed food, for example, is illegal in the EU. If Britain drops these standards to take it here, British producers will not be trusted on the continent and food exports to the continent could become subjected to intense testing before they could be approved, and if they fell short of European standards, would be rejected.

There would also be the probability of very high tariffs in order to pay for the inspections by EU inspectors. And they'd be tough inspections too. The EU doesn't want USA using Britain as a back door into the single market and even if that wasn't a factor, we haven't exactly made any friends on the continent over the way our government has handled Brexit, and the attitude of British Brexiters towards Europeans since the referendum.

We have become bloody horrible people and we've made a lot of enemies over there with our attitude.

So this situation goes beyond merely buying crap food or arguing over whether or not chlorine wash is bad for consumption. There is a knock-on effect and there will be no fooling or shmoozing the Europeans. They're not going to give an inch on this.

Umm no actually. Chlorinated chicken wasn't seen by most people (other than remoaners) a part of project fear as normal people arent scared of eating said chicken. Indeed the European Food Standards Agency (the EU's food safety watchdog) concluded in 2005 that it ‘does not present any risk to public health’. Hell, most people would be exposed to more chlorine in their drinking water. Furthermore, IF chlorinated chicken were to be allowed (and let's wait until there is a signed FTA) then the Government wouldn't be forcing people to eat it. If UK manufacturers were half smart they would make sure that the packaging on their chickens stated that their product was from the UK and contained no chlorine. Consumers could then make up their own minds. By the way, I doubt that many of the thousands of Brits who visit the US every year worry too much about consuming chlorinated chicken.

The truth is that the campaign against chlorinated chicken is based on politics and not science. Romoaners painted a picture of economic armageddon were the UK to leave the EU and so trying to scupper trade deals with countries such as the US is all a part of trying to see that their dire predictions come true.

Whenever I hear remoaners/rejoiners going on about chlorinated chicken i get this image of them running and screaming through the streets of London as a 80ft chlorinated chicken chases after them.

This might come as a shock to you but negotiation is all about give and take. The yanks wont get everything they want and neither will the Brits. A good trade deal will however result in both sides being satisfied with the outcome.

The EU want to tie the UK to the single market. They want to tie the UK to EU rules and regulations. Doing so would make it next to impossible for the UK to strike their own FTAs with other countries. So yes, the UK are right to reject EU demands that would make the country a vassal state of the EU.

Yep, they voted for the UK to be a sovereign state once again. For the UK to be able to, among other things, sign FTAs with other countries. I reckon Brexiters would be reasonably happy so far but December 31 will be the real test. Still, most Brexiters seem to be of the opinion that so far so good.

Correct. That is a part of project fear as it is complete bollocks.

The EU is offering UK an extension to the interim period as a generous gesture to make up for negotiating time lost due to Coronavirus. A responsible British government would accept the offer for the good of the country.

This has been rejected out of hand.

The EU is not trying to force Britain to accept the extension. Rather, there are some European ministers who seem almost glad the end of this sorry saga is in sight. They want this over and done with as much as the British government does.

What the EU would have liked is a deal that is beneficial to both sides. A satisfactory agreement. A resolution on which both sides can shake hands and both sides benefit.

But that doesn't mean a deal at any price. Britain demands a capitulation so that the Johnson government gets everything it wants while giving nothing in return. That is not acceptable.

In the Withdrawal Agreement, the Johnson government accepted a "Level Playing Field". Boris Johnson has unilaterally rejected that now. That is not acting in good faith. Other changes Johnson would like to now impose include free access to the single market without condition. This is not acceptable either.

It is the Johnson government that is expecting the EU to bend over backwards and with wholly unreasonable demands.

The EU will not allow UK, and by extension the USA using UK as a back door into EU markets, to flood the continent with food that does not meet EU standards of hygiene, quality or safety.

And I don't blame them.
