Protest is a legitimate means of lobbying the government in any democratic country.

However, on the part of the protesters it should be lawful and peaceful, and on behalf of the State, the police have an obligation to ensure that those protesting are able to do so without let or hindrance.

That's how it's meant to work.

Both sides have rights and also have obligations. Neither side does its case any good if they stray outside those principles.

No protesting! Even criticism is bad!

It is all Derangement Syndrome... be quiet... god put the government in charge... it is all part of god's plan...

Just shut up and stop complaining... just let the rulers rule!

No

Faceless majority will just fart at the telly

You can influence the government with costly destruction however
....or a large collective of society who boycott spending on anything
other than basic necessities.

Faceless majority are the main problem however....'tis why I personally avoid social contact, if possible, and leave them faceless IMO.

Now, THIS is how you do protest.

BLM protesters in Bristol tore down a statue of British 17th century slave trader Edward Colston and threw it into the Avon on Sunday.

Legitimate protest or mindless vandalism..?

Political act or wanton destruction of public property..?

This was no spur of the moment thing. A group of protesters came prepared with ropes and quickly centered in on the statue. It was a target from the get-go.

Bristol has a black Mayor who stated that although he had wanted to get rid of the statue from before he entered regional politics, he was new to the post of mayor and felt he hadn't yet established enough political clout in the job to have the statue removed.

Protesters in Bristol have declared that another statue in the city, of Cecil Rhodes, is now in their sights.

Rhodes was an empire builder who subjected parts of Africa to colonial rule, particularly in what is now known as Zimbabwe. The country was originally known as Rhodesia, named of course, after him.

Britons of African origin see statues erected to former colonists as offensive.

Vandalism.
Throw a sheet over it, demand it be taken down and start a "Museum of Shame", or something to that effect.

Now that history will be a little more forgotten - or never known to some.

protesting is good if not a division of looting , and looting is the opposite of protesting. some people to hear they need to looting to a big example of the problem. looting is a good example why we need police. the question is does protesting really solve the problem, keep the bay, the violence been suppress under it?

I’m a huge fan of protesting.

It’s totally how we created this country. If people don’t like it they can f*** off.

As long as protesters are not blocking ambulances, they can gather for whatever or whenever they want.

I do have issues with breaking windows, and setting fire to property- However most of the time, that is actually done by persons other than the “protesters”. Either opportunistic criminals or people deliberately trying to discredit the protest.

I don’t judge the whole group by the actions of a few, because that is not fair and says more about my potential faults than theirs.

That being said, if I disagree with your reason for protesting I will point and laugh at your signs. And probably call you a whiner, but I won’t stop you.

I’ll just be amused, and go on with my life.

I agree that such statues should be removed by lawful means and that is the way in which I personally would go about doing so.

I'm not in agreement with the notion that statues are a valid means of teaching history though. Rather, they tend to glorify whatever the subject did. To erect a statue to somebody is a form of public recognition. Of tacit approval.

The Empire is widely taught in British schools as a history subject and it's pretty well known what our record was where slavery is concerned. The best known of all the figures involved in slavery is William Wilberforce..... who was an anti-slavery campaigner...!!

I don't think anybody is going to tear down any of the monuments or statues erected to his memory.

Also..... it can be argued that the removal of Colston's statue by forcible means has already provoked a response.

A statue of Robert Milligan, another historic slave trader, has been removed from outside the London Docklands Museum. This removal was legal and ordered by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

Statue of Robert Milligan Removed

No controversy there, then. It's disappointing that it takes an act of vandalism by demonstrators to set in motion other removals by legitimate means. I would rather these monuments to the likes of Cecil Rhodes Robert Clive among other imperialists had been done long ago.

Hopefully, we are now seeing a sea-change in attitude towards the Empire.

A New Mexico police officer is out of a job and facing an involuntary manslaughter charge after he allegedly used a vascular neck restraint on a man during a traffic stop.

Police body camera footage shows the February struggle involving Antonio Valenzuela, who died after Las Cruces officer Christopher Smelser was heard saying, "I'm going to f**king choke you out, bro."
The city informed Smelser on Friday of its intent to fire him. The four-year veteran of the force had been on administrative leave since the incident.

What took so long?

What did it take - The Protests?!?

Would he have lost his job, or just get swept under the rug?

We're seeing more and more of these types of things come out from the past months ... which show
1) These protests aren't over just one (or two, or three) deaths
2) They are starting to bring change - at least some transparency.

Glad to hear that change is starting to happen. Hopefully Smelser will face - at the very least - manslaughter charges. Reading your comment though, I would suggest there was an element of premeditation where causing death was concerned and a murder charge wouldn't be out of place... but that's without knowing all the facts so OK.... manslaughter it is.

The important thing is that he's being bought to book for what he did.

The pace of change may be slow, but it is change and that can be built upon. Keep at it.

Rome wasn't built in a day.
