Well done to the Kiwis who defeated the poms by an innings and 65 runs in the first test.

Sad at the death of Bob Willis on Wednesday from prostate cancer.

Wisden - The Death of Bob Willis

"Bustling Bob" as he was affectionately known to Warwickshire fans suffered more for his art than most in the game but he never gave up.

He was a kindly character, a true gentleman of the game, except when he had a cricket ball in his hand, and then it was all about business... which is right and proper.... but he always played the game according to its true spirit and served his county and his country well.

He was such a fan of Bob Dylan that he had his name changed to include the great musician's in it. R G Willis on the team sheet became R G D Willis. He always liked that.

As a pundit with Sky Sports he was often quite scathing of the England team, and of players who he felt were underperforming or, heaven forbid, not trying hard enough. Not giving of your best all the time, every time, was the ultimate sin where he was concerned.

But he was also a lovely man. Kind and considerate, a loyal friend and not without a witty quip when the occasion arose.

He will be missed. Like all the great commentators who have left us.... Johnson, Arlott, Martin-Jenkins, Benaud..... lovely men with a deep and knowledgeable love of cricket.

Thanks for everything, Bob. Sleep well. We'll miss you.

Congratulations due to Ben Stokes who was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year for his performances in helping England win the Cricket World Cup, and his incredible innings against Australia in the Ashes series.

He joins Ian Botham (1981) and Andrew Flintoff (2005) as previous winners from the world of cricket. Strangely, 1981 and 2005 also coincided with Ashes series in England.

Second place went to Lewis Hamilton (F1 world champion..... again....) and third place was won by world champion sprinter Dina Asher-Smith.

Other nominees were Raheem Sterling (football, Manchester City and England), Alun Wyn-Jones (Rugby Union, Captain of Wales) and Katerina Johnson-Thompson (world champion heptathlete).

Went to the G on Boxing Day...along with 80k others. There were probably around 20k kiwis in the stands but it sounded more like 50k. Really good atmosphere.

Have been really impressed with the performances of Wagner over the course of the test series so far. I really like how he goes about his cricket.

In many ways the highlight of the 2nd test was the ton by Blundell. Had never opened the batting in a first class match...not ever. And yet there he was on day four making a hundred with his teams back well and truly against the wall. Good on him.

Congrats to the boks on winning the first test against the poms. I saw a wee bit of the match and they had (by RSA standards) pretty good crowds.

Bloody annoying that once again CA have allowed the BCCI to determine the test venues. Every other team that comes here is (rightly) happy for the host nation to determine venues. This means the 1st test is always played at the Gabba. Except for India who insist it has to be played at the AO.

I really hope the selectors go with Will Pucovski. His form demands selection. He is one of Australian cricket's most promising batsmen and he is in great form. Now is the time to select him. Lock him in for at least the first two tests no matter what and give him the chance to learn what is required at test level. His form in the SS more than justifies selection.

A major concern for the Aussies leading into the first test at the Adelaide Oval (should of course be the Gabba) with Warner injured, Pucovski likely to miss due to concussion, and Burns horribly out of form.

Burns seems devoid of all confidence and there is just no footwork at all. He looks unbalanced and isn't getting to the pitch of the ball which makes timing very difficult. When possible you want to be hitting the ball 'under' your eyes. Burns isn't doing this at the moment. He has scored runs at test level. There is nothing about his technique that isn't fixable. That said, he has only one more chance to find some form before the first test.
