"The reason for a space force is simple: space is the strategic high ground from which all future wars will be fought. If we do not master space, our nation will become indefensible."

The USA already had a military organization doing exactly what the Space Force is supposedly going to do.

That military organization was US Air Force Space Command.
The only thing changing is that we will now have same organization as before treated as its own military branch. That is: The organization in question is now going to be a different separate line item on the defense budget.

Ultimately this is going to cost US taxpayers more money to accomplish the exact same mission; I.e. additional staffing, numerous people to fill all the various ranks that will now be created, a new seat at the joint Chiefs of staff, logistics, etc. etc. etc.… More money for the same mission.

And this is what the Republican Party does: it claims it wants smaller government but what it really wants is to create new agencies and have bigger government That is supported by their big corporations.

Some of the other agencies that the Republican Party has created include: the EPA, the ATF, Department of Homeland Security.

I wonder if Trump's Space force will have satellites that can see Trump's wall?

Space Force engineers are working on how to use lunar resources to build a wall.

The last time we played this Star Wars game was under Reagan.

Back then it was (mostly) a BS scam designed to bluff the USSR into escalating the U.S.-USSR arms race in an effort to bankrupt the USSR.... Oh s***! the USA is going to control outer space... We have to protect the Father Land...

It worked.

The USSR, no matter how hard they tried, could not keep up with the capitalism driven war machine and ultimately collapsed. Their communist economy just couldn't keep up.

While the over all effort was a ruse, "we" did obtain some super cool tech out of the effort. My favorite being Laser Eye Surgery. The lasers that were supposedly going to shoot down Russian missiles never worked as a weapon, but turned out to be very useful in eye surgery.

So, now "we" are playing the game again... but in a more nebulous and nonspecific way. The "threat" is not really there... at least not in the way it was during the Cold War. "We" really have no specific threat.

So why? And why now?

> To build up our {i]Defense Industry?
> To replace NASA?
> To boost funds to the burgeoning Space Industry to get "us" back to the Moon and/or Mars?
> To secure control of satellites... and thus control worldwide communications?

Or

> Maybe so Trump can make himself look "cool".

> Something else...?

Side note on all that

The Reagan era Star Wars (aka Strategic Defense Initiative) program office, unlike any other Top Secret program offices, was outside of the Pentagon... arguably in a place where they could easily be targeted by Soviet spying...

Why?

>>> Because it was a ruse and "we" wanted the USSR to get just enough information to panic and sink tons of money into a competitive program, all the while knowing that our ultimate goal was to bankrupt them.

Say what you will about Reagan, but he was way smarter than most give him credit.

So what is the Space Force?

According to General Kwast it is a plan "to improve the current Satellite Command incrementally and call it a Space Force."

So to make any judgement about the Space Force, one would need to know about the "Satellite Command."

I don't know anything about it, and the General doesn't say much about it. Instead he offers a list of things that the Space Force should do and a list of probable benefits.

Not according to the General? He says it is about satellites, but he does argue that it should expect protect people in space during the next decades.

I'm kind of hoping I don't fight giant a** roaches while out in space. Nor do I want to fight Xenomorphs. Getting killed by those bastards are brutal.
