1 Peter 1:13

....the loins of your mind...

Now that is the very problem... loins in one's mind...

1 Peter 1:13

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

.... gird up your loins ....

I can't say that without laughing. Did people ever actually talk like that?

1 Peter 1:13 (alternate translation)

"Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming."

So "gird up the loins of your mind" might translate as "with minds that are alert and fully sober... ."

The second translation suggests the second coming Christ, a subject which many modern Christians obsess about, even here on TFS.

I wonder if that suggests that the Renaissance translators may have been more worldly (like maybe they 'girded their loins with viggah' ...) and less holy than modern translators.

Psalm 118:5-6

I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place.

The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

I bet that if Strunk read this he would edit it to "In distress I called upon the Lord..."

I saved the cat with a ladder.

Did the cat have a ladder?

Or with a ladder, did I save the cat?

The later was the former for the ladder, and there are no reported incidents of a cat having a ladder. A cat might have some litter though. WE might send a letter to the litter people to see if for further information.

If Schrodinger had a cat, I suppose Strunk can have a ladder?

Modern translators must have read Strunk.

Psalm 118:5-6

When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord;
he brought me into a spacious place.
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?

Luke 10:35

And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.

Isaiah 2:4

They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.

1 Timothy 6:10

For the love of money is the root of all evil:

I have lost count of how often I have heard this misquoted. People tend to leave off the phrase, "for the love of ..."

Money is a good thing. One wonders what would replace it. Without money what would the Samaritan have used to pay the inn keeper? Maybe a sword or a pruning hook.

Wasn't Timothy, Paul's son in the faith... not his real son mind you, but his son in faith....?

What is a "son in faith"?

I mean, Jesus is/was the son of God...

...but a son in faith...?

Is that like a Roman Catholic Priest and one of his choir boys or alter boys?

Do bees, ants or prairie dog colonies have currency?

They seem to get along fine without.

As do Stone Age societies in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Paul refers to Timothy as "my son in faith" or "my son."

According to tradition, Timothy had a Jewish mother and a Greek father. He traveled with Paul's group of missionaries. I think Paul's use of the phrase, "my son," means he recognizes their mentor-disciple relationship.

However, the possibility that they were father and son suggests a plot for a novel by Lew Wallis or Nikos Kazantzakis.
