In the news recently, political upheavals in Iran reported on worldwide but largely ignored by American media, overshadowed as it were by the ongoing Three Ring Trumpeachment Show.

Now the US is attacking Iranian targets in Syria and Iraq.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/29/world/middleeast/us-airstrikes-iran-iraq-syria.html
This is receiving, at least for now, mainstream coverage. I'm not saying striking Iranian targets is necessarily a bad idea however, it will help to undermine the counter government organizations in Iran.
The reason is psychological. Very few hardcore activists create protests by encouraging other members of a society to join them. These people are from the politically "middle" ground. Once those people begin to fear US intervention or invasion they will abandon those leaders and become loyal to their Theocratic government.
This mentality is similar to the Cold War mentality in the US. The fear of a nuclear war with the CCCP was enough that most people would turn their heads from atrocities committed by US allies and outright criminal behavior by their own government if it was deemed to be in the interest of the war against communism.

What I'm saying is it is almost as if the strikes are intended to help prop up the Ayatollah.

Today there were protests at the US Embassy in Iraq by pro Iranian Shi'ites. This is an escalation of hostilities between the US and Iran. Of course the different nations and militias in the region are aligned with either Iran and the Russian Federation or Saudi Arabia and the US. Could this be leading us toward World War III? Notice the Superpower NOT involved in this messy affair; China.
Police arriving at a bar brawl will often wait patiently for the combatants to beat the hell out of each other, tiring each other out, before entering and arresting anyone.

Qasem Soleimani was blown up by a US rocket attack on his convoy after he left the Baghdad Airport. He was an interesting fellow but good riddance anyway. Timing being so important I'm not sure this was a good call. An enemy of the Taliban in Afghanistan who once threatened to overthrow the government in Tehran. Here's the wiki
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qasem_Soleimani
Wonder what tomorrow will bring? More demonstrations I suppose.

The history of Iran is worth studying. The United States, Britain and the Soviet Union were involved in the nation's affairs since World War II. The 1953 coup that overthrew the government and reinstalled the Pahlavi family dynasty ( the Shah of Iran ) was orchestrated covertly by the United States.
In 1979 a revolution that deposed the Shah because of his suspension of the constitution began. After the dust cleared the Ayatollah Khomeni, recently returned from exile in France, and his clerics controlled the country. It then became known as the Islamic Revolution. They systematically destroyed the other organizations that had initiated the revolution against the Shah and their dream of a return to constitutional law was crushed.
Of course we all know about the Iran Contra Affair.

Ever since the Iranian Revolution Iran has sponsored attacks against Israel. These attacks have come from proxies; Hamas, Hezbollah and the like. Iran supplies the weapons and training for these endeavors. Prior to the revolution Iran was an allied nation. It would be naive to say that the Ayatollah's reign could not have been sponsored by anti-semites from the West. General Soleimani was the director and coordinator of these groups as well as groups in the new (and Shi'a controlled) nation of Iraq.

On the other hand Soleimani had also threatened to overthrow the government of Iran if they didn't put down the protests during the 1999 student protests. Currently there are protests in Iran being forcibly put down by security forces. The government recently shut down the nation's internet service in an attempt to keep this strife out of the international eye. I would say talk and fear of World War III are premature.

A list of things overshadowed by this event

1) Trump's impeachment proceedings
2) Anti government. pro democracy protests in Iran - now effectively quashed
3) An outbreak of a new and as yet unidentified virus in Hong Kong unexpectedly interrupting their pro democracy protests.

Here's an interesting op-ed on Soleimani
https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/soleimani-anti-imperialist-hero-200105211451136.html

Personally I go with the "I think he had it coming crowd." There are a lot of international characters out there that have it coming. The question is the timing.

What is your opinion on some of the media complimenting Soleimani after his assassination?

We find differing opinions on events and personalities now we didn't used to find before the internet. Before there were three sources of news in the US; ABC, NBC, and CNN. That was it. I'm not calling it censorship but our access to opinions weren't as inclusive or international as they are today.
The Al-Jazeera article doesn't compliment him really. It points out that he was a bedfellow of American interests in the past.
