Science (as I understand it) uses empirical evidence

Both religion and philosophy address questions for which there is no empirical evidence.

Religion uses supernatural explanations

Philosophy uses reason.

Where one ends and the other starts is a matter of opinion.

And ...and (of course) there is natural theology and the philosophy of religion which helps confuse things.

Religion = gods

Philosophy = reason

Science = experience (experiment)

It seems to me that they are interrelated.

The supernatural is simply something science, because our current understanding has either not caught with or has been misdirected. The scientific method is exemplary in it's ability to discover the nature of things yet no one wrote down the mathematical formulas that describe the physics of a catapult until the advent of calculus. It is possible to know something works without having the scientific knowledge to describe it.

Your comment here makes me think that you might enjoy Gary Snyder's "The Practice of the Wild" (essays).

Generally people put this book in the Nature section, but I think it is a bit deeper than that. Sections, I think, touch on your thoughts as stated above.... it is an easy read... only a couple hundred pages...

Joseph Campbell will have covered much of it already, but as you know (if I remember correctly) Campbell can be a hard read... almost too much information packed into every line. Snyder was a contemporary of Ginsberg, Kerouac and the other writers of the Beat movement... etc.

Is this still an open subject/question to the OP? Or has it morphed?

[Mar 10, 2011 @ 15:43:04 The post date is pretty old.]

I asked that because I am currently being moderated on Disqus. Sometimes I get things wrong, but I will say them with zest, anyway.

[The survey is obviously over, so don't burden me, with telling me the obvious.]

Here on TFS topics periodically get revived... even very old ones... one might view them as zombies.

Thank you, and I view it as a zombie. I revive old threads myself, and with no fear in my runny eyes. I have gotten flak for doing it too.
Is there anything else that you would care to comment on?

Me..? In this thread...?

I think my past comments in this thread have covered it.

As a brief recap, I pretty much have disdain for organized religion.

The people of organized religion are another matter. Many, if not most, are well meaning... or at least that seems to be their goal. Typically their first fatal flaw (metaphorically speaking) is to not read and study their own holy book.

Then they typically seem to listen to what others tell them, cling to what they like, then try to tell others what their holy book (and religion) is all about, even though they don't actually know, because they never took the time to read & study.

It is my pet peeve but it gives my joy and laughter to point this out to people who try to tell me (and others) a bunch of (typically) unsupported bull s***.

A human can learn to understand science by diligence, hard work, research, experimentation, evaluation, publication and peer review.

Science is not changed when man learns to understand it. It is humankind that is changed.

Religion can be altered to mean whatever humankind wants it to mean.

I have been through the Holy Bible {Christian} at least 6 times. I have read it and I have listened to it on audio. I can tell you that some versions of it are better than others; as far as personal comprehension, plus liking the wording, the style of it.

I have a Catholic version that I intend to read through, soon; I have been sick form some kind of flu crud, or I would have started by now. I was once opposed to Catholicism, but that has been a while; they are the intelligentsia of Christianity. I can see that by what they do, and I can see that because of Notre Dame; and the parochial schools.

I have found that the quiet types of people, are always the smartest, in Christianity or anywhere else. I can be mouthy at times, but I am very quiet inside and out, for the most part. I do not strive to be smart, I am already that, I strive to be wise. Because the wise man can figure out difficult things, and get things right, and correct.

I am 64 but I have set a few lofty goals for this year. I am going to fill in some empty spaces in my learning; and I am going to start with math and chemistry. I am just going to sit down and read the books, and do the work, until I know the subjects.

Thank you, The King James Bible and Shakespeare, are the best written works of English literature. They are excellent, and cannot be improved upon, or equaled, IMHO.

PS: I have at least 6 different versions of the Bible, and I have never relied upon a single version.

The Living Bible is fantastic in some ways, and my first hardback Holy Bible, was a parallel of TLB and KJV. It aided my comprehension immeasurably.

I have a poorly written Koran though, it just stinks in it language. So I am going to go BN and get one, they have an excellent version, and it is cheap.

The King James ...

I view the King James as a mediocre translation of the Vulgate, which (ultimately) is a flawed translation of the original Greek & Hebrew.

I not longer possess a bible.

After a little over 4 decades of repeatedly reading various bibles (including in Spanish) front to back (1st word to last word), studying the bible and its history (compilation), and studying comparative theology (to include by not be limited to Christianity & Judaism), it has become clear to me that the bible is nothing more than ancient mythology in poorly written prose.

So I got rid of all of mine. I have literally no need.

Side note: While I do like Shakespeare, Tolkien is way better.
