Never have I ever heard a person say "godamit" and thought to myself: "oh look, a pious person is asking God to curse that thing!" I would say that there is an inverse correlation in the health of a person's prayer life and his utterance of "godamit."

Most always that phrase is used as a curse word added to emphasize or underscore the severity or level of emotion/hurt/discomfort/displeasure blah blah.

Are you saying a pious person would pray to god to curse something in another way?

That's not very christian of them. ... Though, admittedly, god isn't just for christians.

My grandfather was a very pious person... Southern Baptist... church goer... believer... prayed thankgully a lot... shared his belief with his children and we grandchildren... additionally never drank booze... never a philandering persons... worked hard... paid his employees well and took care of them before "health care" was a thing... etc...

... he had two "favorite" phrases:

1. {i]Devil fetch it!

2. Goddamn it!

Both meant exactly what they said... the 1st was offering the Devil his dues, the second was asking God to curse "it"... and the thought of pissing off or disrespecting god was the kind of thing that might get a child or grandchild a bit of a red colored a** from a spanking... another adult disrespecting god would have gotten a disdainful look and a shake of the head (my grandfather was a big strong man, but a gentle giant one might say.

Of course you never knew my grandfather, so your above written statement is probably still true.

Side notes:

1. I say "goddammit" every now and again. It is never meant to insult god. I literally want god to damn the thing I am actually insulting.

2. I never curse god, take "his" name in vane, and never ever mock god. I do mock so of "his" hypocritical followers, but never ever "him".

Funny thing... there was at least one prophet of the OT (Elijah... or Ezekiel... or... sorry his name is on the tip of my tongue....) who was known and admitted to "bad language"... i.e. cursing...

Point being: Even good and "pious" people make mistakes and (sometimes) use foul language.

Of course, to "know" that, the part about the prophet with a bad mouth, one would have to both read the bible AND pay attention while reading it.

Oh... and on this topic... many a fundamentalist preacher has invoked the proverbial wrath of hell fire and brimstone... in the name of their lord.

No. No. I'm saying that taking the Lord's name in vain is a sin and that sin is commonly committed in our day and that we must raise awareness of God's holiness and the benefits that will have on our lives and practical/important steps like raising children/self-governance/character-building and the success of nations.

Well, preachers are allowed. They have different rules. Like politicians

...So the 2nd commandment is interpretive?
I suppose depending on the definition of "Vein", and the context ...

Also,
If god Doesn't end up damning that thing, was that curse still a sin?

God's curses are the only ones that count. He's bigger than us and at the end of the day, even his enemies will do his bidding.

Blah blah blah....

The point I was trying to make was stupid, so I will fall back on >>> only god's opinion counts <<<

Of course I know exactly what god's opinion is.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. For the Lord will not hold him guiltless who taketh his name in vain.

This is a reference to the marriage vows between you and God, not the use of "Goddammit" as a curse word.

I hear that quite a bit. It's a novel thought. "Oh hai--the bible doesn't mean what it says!!" The reason why we should not dismiss the prohibition of misusing the name of God is that the language of the ten commandments and the people who first received those commandments tells us how important God's name is. Truthfully we ought not swear on God's name-- just let our yeses be yes and our no's be no. His name is Holy and misusing His name is tantamount to swearing.

For those like yourself who offer that explanation (really--dismissal of clear instruction) up, I'm pretty sure there's no moving you. But nonetheless, I offer up again my early training on the subject. It's a track from a kid's record my parents picked up at the pharmacy in the late 60's. I've never heard anything like it since and it's truly a masterstroke of story telling. See below.

Unless the "we" is our lord and savior Donald Jesus Christ Tump... in which case it isn't a problem.
