So, I finally wrote my first poetry book. I am almost done with the manuscript. I want to publish it, but I am unsure of whether or not I should self publish through Amazon (which is insanely quick apparently) or see if I can get it published through a publisher (which will probably be quite tricky). I still have to go through the proofreading and editing process before I can publish it. If things work out, it may be published before Christmas, or at least before New Year's Eve.

I am excited but also quite nervous. I'm still working on a title as well. I have one, but I don't know if it would work.

once again, congratulations and good luck!

pat-in my 20's for awhile. I thinking a writing a book about my life. like earl hammer's " homecoming " that inspirited the well-known tv show, " the waltons " . in time, I lost interested in that pursuit on writing.

before internet, pat. I sent away in the mail to publishing company that they sent a large vanilla envelope that me, not only teach you how what the pros and cons of publishing business. how to write a book, and what publisher are looking for. also, give you the information how edit your book. also, give your information, what companies to sent to.

pat- since, we have the internet - you shouldn't have problems find a publishers with a very wide information at your disposal.

Poetry is hard to publish. Most of the big publishing companies are more critical of poetry manuscripts than they are of other types of books.

None the less, it is worth the effort to send your manuscript to a few of the big publishing companies. They typically have a layout standard that is easy to do. If they like your manuscript, you are set. If they don't like it, you can self publish. The down side is that, if you sent your manuscript today, even if accepted, you probably wont make a New Years publishing date... not enough time.

You could try to find an agent. However, they are going to cost you money... sometimes even if they don't actually push your manuscript for publication.

There used to be a magazine (or maybe it was a book...?) that supposedly helped prospective poets with all this. You can probably go on line and get all the information on (as an example) the top 5 (or 10) poetry publishing companies (their addresses & style guidelines)... then print the required number of manuscripts (probably at least two copies per company)... and for a small amount of money send off your manuscripts....

Then the waiting game begins, as they may or may not even answer you... so you need to set a time frame in your mind (how long you will wait before self publishing)... 3 to 6 months is likely a reasonable waiting period...

etc.

I thought about sending it to a publisher, but I may just self-publish my first one. I also made a promise to a few people so I may just do that. It may not be the best decision, but it's worth a try. I did get my manuscript proofread and made edits in the process. I will post a link here once I do it.

It is YOUR decision, so it is good for YOU.

You get published... It goes on your resume/portfolio/CV that you have published a book... it is either "successful" or "not so successful"... you learn... etc.

Good luck with it.

Well done. Keep up the good work. Carry on and you'll develop the idea, because the creative side of your brain is working and wants to keep working. A first book is always the most challenging and then the following ones improve as time goes by. With time you'll notice that your writing skills will get better with every word you type, every paragraph you finish. That happened to me with my novel. It's now finished and I am looking for a way to enter it into a competition and one day have the book published.

I'm happy to know someone is making waves. Even if you don't become successful straight away, someone will take notice of your work and then you'll get recognition.

Thanks.

I submitted one poem to a magazine from the site, allpoetry.com. They haven't refunded me so I believe they will put it on there. I'm waiting for them to publish it. They said they'll give me two copies of it.

For the Kindle version, Amazon offers to show a snippet of it. I'm working on getting it on Goodreads where it will allow me to showcase a few of the poems on there.
