I recently started learning guitar.

To be truthful, I started learning guitar about 11 year ago, but a variety of life events got in the way... thwarted my efforts... and postponed my musical education....

(Long story, but if you are imagining disruption in the middle east you are not far off....)

Anyway, I am now trying to learn guitar. More specifically: classical guitar. Also, I am working on reading music, learning the beat (1-2-3-4... 1-2-3... etc), and (because of the classical style) learning finger movements (both right and left hand) to match the timing/beat/musical notes....

I have developed a cult audience... one squirrel, a house wren, a California thrasher, a pair of Scrub Jays and a hummingbird (maybe) that seem to like my performances (aka practice)... or are interested in what the hell the nitwit human is up to...

[Note: While it is bigly unlikely, if I ever get "good" I will let you all know.]

So...

What about you....

Do you play a musical instrument... sing... conduct...?

Play NO! practice yes. I have started training on the harmonica. This is designed to help my breathing. I am also pedaling a small exercise bike. Like I told my doctors you may have put me in Hospice care but I am not giving up

I played the guitar for a while when I was younger. I was part of my high school's chorus during my senior year. I would like to sing again, but I need a lot of practice.

Trumpet since '72. I still play.
Over the years I've played out with friends at open mic nights.

Piano/keyboard, consistently, since mid-90's
No formal lessons.
I dabble with MIDI too, but more so for the sounds than the control.

I was on a cool site "Bandhub" for awhile, until it shut down this past spring.
On those collaborations, aside from horn and keys, I've played circular saw, air-raid siren, breaking glass, and other peculiar sounds.
I've occasionally posted some of my Bandhub collabs here.

You'll get some hits on YouTube if you search "mrmhead"

I tried guitar a few years back, but I didn't have the motivation to go through the pain of building callouses.

I started playing guitar at uni. I found it difficult to learn from tutorial books at first because I'm left handed and they're all oriented to right handed players. There shouldn't be any difference, but there is. If you're a 'leftie' you'll understand.

I had to persevere with fretting because my delicate little girly fingertips got very sore for a long time but I stuck at it and they eventually toughened up.

I didn't really get very far with self-learning from books but when we had left uni, gotten married and were living in Falmouth, Amanda had a mate at work who played and they kinda got talking. He said that he'd come round to our flat every Tuesday evening and teach me as long as we fed him and bought the beer.

Bargain..!! That was a deal.

Spike and I jammed together just about every Tuesday for more than a year and my playing improved dramatically. I learned to read music and not rely on simple tablatures and he even helped me to master barre chords which up until then had been a big problem for me. he changed jobs and moved away so the Jam sessions stopped but we still keep in touch on Facebook.

I have three guitars now. Two acoustic, one with steel strings* and one with nylon strings which is better for playing classical pieces. I have a Yamaha Pacifica electric guitar which isn't exactly a top of the range Stratocaster but it's got a sound I like. I play it through a Marshall MG15CFX Combo Amp which gives me all the sound I want at 15 watts with a nice tone. The Stompware came as an extra.

*Which I've named "Cat" after the legendary Cat Stevens. I looooooooooove playing "Peace Train".

Amanda learned to play flute at school and was in her school orchestra. She has an instrument and we duet sometimes, just for the enjoyment of it. We'd like to send Meg for piano lessons when she's older if she shows an interest in music. She may even show an interest in guitar so I'll teach her.

I'm a long way from what I would call "talented", but I'm competent and enjoy playing music for the sheer pleasure of it. I've no intention of joining a band at any time. Too much of a commitment (rehearsals, gigs, etc) but I have played at Pride camp site parties (very drunken, naughty lesbian beer songs. Everybody especially enjoyed the Tale of Nellie Higginbottom), I've played on coaches going to rugby matches (we had an Elvis impersonator on one coach going to Twickenham and I played while he went through his repertoire. It went down well with everybody). I've taken Cat to summer evening beach parties and played "around the campfire" songs.... that sort of thing.

I would not call myself a musician. Just a player who enjoys making what music I can within my range of ability.

in my teenager years, I was 13 years old, I was trying played about off and on playing guitar, after three years, I found out that you play with strings in front of the guitar, not the back side. I always wonder no sound coming from the guitar when I played it.

I never realized build enough callous on my finger tips to play that good. I try for years to played " the gingerbread man " , I finally gave up played it, so I ate him instead.
