"It" is all up in the air right now... except the part about Trump getting re-elected.... the voters of the USA aren't smart enough to not re-elect him.

It’s up to the DNC to educate the voters then. No, they haven’t been doing a very good job of it, but that is Sanders fault. Sanders is horrible at convincing people other than the idealistic (see, youth), but I don’t think he will get the nomination anyways. Warren is a teacher, who would do very well, in my opinion, and already has. She just wasn’t ready for the Medicare onslaught (she finally released a plan today, by the way). Even a Biden/Klobuchar ticket would destroy Trump. They are seasoned campaigners who know how to hit their opponent in front of red audiences.

Education is the primary focal point of the next stage of impeachment by the way. So it will be interesting to see if the DNC finally has their act together on getting a message out.

The biggest thing though would be if Facebook followed Twitter’s suit and banned all political advertising. That would be huge in at least eliminating all the misinformation that counters such education. There is a huge swath of people that get all their news from such feeds, given cable’s decline and reduced affinity to read traditional forms of print.

I know you probably disagree with me on some of this, as you have said so before.

I think my biggest disagreements with you might be that you are more optimistic than I am relative to the 2020 political race.

My guess, with the Democrats, is that Warren will be selected.

Biden/Klobuchar would be an interesting ticket, and you could be right that they would destroy Trump... but only among those to the left of center.

I expect the GOP and Trump followers are going to stick with him regardless of anything. They have either downed a large stadium cup of the Kool Aid or are only fixated on two things: beating Hillary and getting more conservative judges on the Supreme Court.

(And yes, I know that Hillary isn't running... and that she lost in 2016... but Trump's followers don't seem to realize that and/or thing Hillary is behind the scenes pulling the strings... )

And many independent voters are going to vote a pocket book election believing that either A) Trump created the "booming" economy (which is, of course BS) and/or B) being to afraid to "rock the boat"... the economy is going good, don't screw it up with a new president...

I expect 2020 to be a replay of 2016... for the most part.... The Democratic candidate will get the popular vote, and Trump will win the Electoral College.

The big difference being that with the Russia investigation over and impeachment over (probably impeached but not removed from office) the Democrats won't have anything "big" left to go after... and Trump will claim the greatest mandate in U.S. political history.

Over the long term the Democrats really need to be more focused on the Senate and the various Governorships... but they won't.

While disinformation and lack of education is one major factor that contributed to Trump and his support, it wasn’t the only thing. It is the narrative that Hillary wants, and she may be right.....to a degree.

It was also the fact that the working class felt slighted which led to much of the center swinging over to the right, as Hillary wasn’t exactly catering to them as much as to the liberal elite. This is also why I think Bernie would have won the election if he got the nomination. People just got tired of the same old establishment politics that goes on both sides of the aisle ever since the Clinton/Bush dynasties started in the 80’s. Yes, Trump wasn’ t exactly the epitome of the working class either, but at least he was an outsider instead of a career politician, that would change things up a bit in Washington, even if as a molotov cocktail. People just don’t like Hillary and what she represents.

My point here is that there are intelligent people in the center and those who lean right, but have an open mind, who didn’t vote for Hillary in 2016 but won’t vote for Trump in 2020. I think Biden/Klobuchar would win those people over. Warren might, but she may lean too far to the left for their tastes. The Medicare for all issue is the prime example of that - the whole argument of being able to keep their current health plans, which is what those in the center want. But her passion may make up for it in getting more liberals to vote. Which would help in your cause of flipping the Senate.

Yes, there is a huge sheeple contingent that will vote for Trump even if he leads everyone over a cliff, but that is only 40% of the population. It’s the center we have to look at.

And they are not as dumb as the elite think they are.

While I am not an elites, let's hope this group of voters isn't as dumb gullible as I think they are.

My view about the healthcare plan, and really many plans by many candidates, is It's Only A Plan.
Major things like that aren't going to be codified "Day 1"
It will need to be re-arranged in various ways to get enough support even within the party.
Look how difficult it was to get ACA on the floor - having to massage it and drop in some pork. And even then, it took years for it to roll out, and it's still being changed (gutted)

So, Leon, you have me reading about Warren and "Medicare for All".

As I understand it, "Medicare for All" would require $20.5 trillion in new federal spending over a decade. That spending includes higher taxes on the wealthy but no new taxes on the middle class.

$20.5 trillion.

If I'm not mistaken (and I might be) that number is twice the national debt. In addition, while Warren says that there will be no new taxes on the middle class, if history tells us anything it is that any claim that the burden will not be put on the middle class is BS.

I don't see any way for Warren to sell this to the American people. 40+% of the voters are going to be against her just because she is a Democrat and not Trump.

I think, regardless of the line item facts of her plan, this idea is the end of any chance she has/had in being elected.

I don’t disagree with any of this, but am curious now - does this mean you no longer think Warren will win the nomination, or are we just talking about the general election here?

I don’t think she will win the nomination, unless Bernie drops out early and endorses her. She was at a high point before the last debate and has lost ground to Biden since then. It was due to her refusal to answer basic questions about Medicare for All. And now that she has put forth her detailed plan, it will only get worse for her.

Biden has the lead for his to lose. The only problem with him is his age, which makes the VP more important than in recent memory. But he will beat Trump if he is nominated.

I will say this, though, it’s good that the left wing vs moderate issues is playing out early, such as Medicare for All, so that we can hash it out and get it out of the way in time for the general election.

Agreed.

Still Warren's $20.5 trillion is/was a huge blunder.

If Trump was intelligent, which he isn't, he would build his campaign around that number... build any number of half truths, misdirections and bold faced lies about how the "Left" is going to double the national deficit and destroy the economy.... etc...

It could be as bad as Hillary's "Deplorables" statement.... which I believe turned a lot of moderates against her.

After Trump suggested in an interview published Thursday that he should sell T-shirts with the words "Read the Transcript," his campaign was selling them on their website by the next morning.

Damn ... I think both sides would agree.

Too bad they jumped on it first.

Funny....

Except I’m pretty sure the complete transcript hasn’t been released, so all “we” could read is the partial “not a verbatim transcript”.

I guess that wouldn’t be quite as cool of a T shirt meme: Read the Partial Transcript!
