Well, I predict Kamala will drop a little in the polls, and a few of the 2nd tier candidates such as Tulsi, Wang, Booker, and Castro will maybe gain a point and qualify for the Sept. debates. But other than that, this looks like it will end up a three-way between Biden, Warren, and Sanders in the long run.

What a contest it would be if Warren or Sanders dropped out and teamed up against Biden.

And O’Rourke needs to reset his sights on the Senate. Now.

A few examples of the flaws in the debate system...

> Reagan had one debate were he came off looking like an old confused man with demential. That was followed by another debate or two) where he came off looking sharp, controlled, "presidential", etc. As it turns out he did have alzheimer's later in life, though the odds are that his one bad performance was at worst the very early stages and more likely just a very bad day. The point being that had his follow up debate performances be mediocre, he could well have lost the election (something some people, even many Republicans of the time) would not have lost any sleep over.

> Nixon vs Kennedy. Nixon had a very bad performance, which pretty will ruined his run for office. Had Nixon won, many things in our history would most likely be different... from Vietnam to Watergate.

> Trump vs Clinton... (blah blah blah)

Now, each of those candidates (& their political parties) had "platforms" that were easy to access, read, review, compare to "reality"... easy to compare to one's own political belief system.

But we American like the "reality show".... the melodrama... we like to view "our guy" and put our own bias on why "our guy" won... and if a candidate slips up during a debate, sometimes even for a moment, they are doomed.

The thing is, some people are better at "performance" and others are better at "function"....

etc.

Loved Wang’s bit on the reality show thing. And very spot on, too, I might add.

Biden was freaking hot when he was young.

I’m still on board for Harris.

So it looks like we are set with the next debate. It will take place on Thursday, September 12, and consist of the following 10 candidates (listed with their polling average since the July 30-31 debate):

Joe Biden (29.3%)
Bernie Sanders (17.1%)
Elizabeth Warren (16.0%)
Kamala Harris (7.8%)
Pete Buttigieg (5.2%)
Beto O’Rourke (2.6%)
Cory Booker (2.0%)
Andrew Yang (2.0%)
Julián Castro (1.0%)
Amy Klobuchar (1.0%)

None of the other candidates qualified for this debate.

Couple of points to make here...

Tulsi Gabbard is the only other candidate who is polling at or above 1%, and in fact is polling higher than Castro and Klobuchar, at 1.2%. However, she failed to surpass 2% in 4 of the polls accepted by the DNC (she did on 2 of them), so hence she is out. She clearly got screwed here, not to mention, she hasn’t been able to campaign like the rest because she is currently on active duty.

If we combine the percentages of the two progressives on the top - Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, who are pretty much identical in platform, that combined vote would be greater than Biden’s. What this indicates is that progressives should be pushing one of them to drop out and support the other to get their agenda past Biden and into the lead.

I disagree that Bernie and Elizabeth are identical. Yes they are both most progressive than Biden (but really that’s not hard to be). There is a strong group of Bernie supporter that are willing to pitch a fit and stay home if he doesn’t win. Which is their right and all, but honestly after 2016, I don’t have the same faith in a Bernie campaign follow through with the votes.

Personally though, I’m happy enough with any of the 10 now that win the nomination, but mostly it’s a reaction that I have actual anxiety over the outcome of another Trump term might literally lead to the death or or life impacting consequences (like not being able to persue life, liberty, or happiness consequences) on my friends or family.

They are identical in their approach to the major issues, such as their largely anti-corporate/democratic socialist message, universal health care, free university education, Green Deal-like environmental overhaul, etc. I’m sure if you dig into the finer details of each of their plans, you will find differences. But details change anyways once legislation filters through Congress and into its final negotiated form on the President’s desk. Big picture-wise, though, they are the same, and I don’t think progressives from one camp will find much to complain about with the other camp. They certainly were complimentary of each other in their last debate.

As far as their constituencies, I do agree that if Bernie followers feel burned by what happens to the Bern, like in 2016, they will be angry. Which is why if it becomes clear that Warren is going to gain the edge (which appears to be the case), instead of dragging this out all the way to the convention like in 2016, Bernie should take one for the cause EARLY and declare that Warren holds the same ideals and we should therefore all get behind her instead. Then I think followers would listen. Bernie would be better serving progressives this way, in both championing the cause rather than himself, and better ensuring it wins over the moderate alternative, if that is what they really want.

Personally, though, I do agree with you that any of the 10 is fine with me, as they all approach the issues from the same slant, and, more than anything else, any is definitely better than the catastrophe we have in Oval Office today.
