4 Democratic primary candidates have been leading Trump in average general election polling since the June 26-27 debates:

Joe Biden 51.3% Trump 43.5% (Biden +7.8)

Bernie Sanders 49.8% Trump 45.4% (Sanders +4.4)

Elizabeth Warren 47.6% Trump 46.4% (Warren +1.2)

Kamala Harris 46.8% Trump 46.0% (Harris +0.8)

The other Democratic candidates have either been failing to surpass Trump in these polls or not been a part of these polls.

For perspective, polling during the final week leading up to the Nov. 8, 2016 election favored Hillary Clinton over Trump by +3.2 (46.8% to 43.6%).

Clinton did end up winning the popular vote by +2.1 (48.2% to 46.1%), but lost the electoral college vote (Trump’s 306 to Clinton’s 232), and, thus, the election.

For the Sept. 12-13 DNC debates, candidates must have at least 2 percent support in four qualifying national or early-state polls released after the first debate on June 26-27 through two weeks before this debate and 130,000 unique donors (including at least 400 individual donors in at least 20 states).

So far, only 6 have qualified:

Joe Biden
Bernie Sanders
Elizabeth Warren
Kamala Harris
Pete Buttigieg
Beto O’Rourke

4 others have so far met either the polling criteria or donor criteria, but not both:

Andrew Yang
Cory Booker
Amy Klobuchar
Julian Castro

The rest of the candidates have yet to meet either criteria.

Held today I think it would be Biden against Trump.

Give all the rats in Baltimore a ballot and the orange man is doomed.

Yeah it looks like Biden is winning this thing, and against Trump as well. But a lot can change in the next 15 months. Heck, things could change Wednesday, as he will undoubtedly be victim to attacks in the debate by those trying to spark their own dwindling chances. Which is a shame, really, as he is probably the best chance we have of defeating Trump, due to the moderates he would pull in. The left is going to vote for the Democrats no matter who it is, although I will say that a candidate like Sanders or Warren might garner a more passionate turnout.

I don't watch the early debates.

For me they are little more than a dumb effort to feed the American appetite for reality TV.

I suppose one benefit is to see just how divided our two political parties really are... and "good" for recording what negative things "they" say about each other so "we" can call them out later for changing their opinion later (Lindsey Graham being a prime example).

But over all, I view these early debates as designed for the gullible and lazy.

Joe Biden.

Even though he didn’t actually appear in the debate, he won simply because of the overall messaging the moderates gave in constant counter-attacks to the two progressives (Sanders and Warren). Nobody is going to care about these moderates or vote for any of them, though - they will vote for Biden instead.

However, that being said, Warren did probably win some votes, as she came across as strong, passionate, and certainly spoke with authority. She appears to be prime and ready to be this year’s Sanders.

Yes, I’ve been harping on the debate format for years. We should be reading well thought out ideas, not relying on bursts of noise.

A few examples of the flaws in the debate system...

> Reagan had one debate were he came off looking like an old confused man with demential. That was followed by another debate or two) where he came off looking sharp, controlled, "presidential", etc. As it turns out he did have alzheimer's later in life, though the odds are that his one bad performance was at worst the very early stages and more likely just a very bad day. The point being that had his follow up debate performances be mediocre, he could well have lost the election (something some people, even many Republicans of the time) would not have lost any sleep over.

> Nixon vs Kennedy. Nixon had a very bad performance, which pretty will ruined his run for office. Had Nixon won, many things in our history would most likely be different... from Vietnam to Watergate.

> Trump vs Clinton... (blah blah blah)

Now, each of those candidates (& their political parties) had "platforms" that were easy to access, read, review, compare to "reality"... easy to compare to one's own political belief system.

But we American like the "reality show".... the melodrama... we like to view "our guy" and put our own bias on why "our guy" won... and if a candidate slips up during a debate, sometimes even for a moment, they are doomed.

The thing is, some people are better at "performance" and others are better at "function"....

etc.

Williamson is reasonable. At least she talks about healing.

That’s important.
