growing up in the early 2000s i remember searching through many sites, finding many interesting things, never really staying in one site, but it seems to me that people nowadays stick to a few sites at most.

I have to admit I have not moved around that much and tend to be fairly consistent. This is one of the only forum sites I have ever been on of my own volition (and the only one in the last 10 years or so). I'm not on the usual suspects like F'assBook or t***ter either.

what happened to the internet nomads?

The same was with most if not all other "nomads".

Sooner or later they find a a place to be... a home of sorts.

Add that to the phenomenon that with "new" technology, comes first a boom, then a bust, then a move towards stability....

"Dot Coms" being a prime example... computer tech advances... which leads to the internet... which leads towards the boom of the "Dot Coms"... too many are created... then comes the bust.... then the stable money makings "Dot Coms" rise, consolidate, stabilize the industry....

Social Media is another example... there was a boom of social media outlets... many faded away (the bust)... now there are only a few left which attract most of the customers...

It is also like the big stores like Costco and WallMart... there used to be many smaller stores; the "Mom & Pop" stores... the big stores drive the smaller stores out of business...

Book stores used to many... almost every shopping center & every mall... not there are very few....

etc.

It's a more dangerous world out there now.

Once bitten, twice shy.

Knowledge is power even if you have to practice finding it among misinformation

The net was making the underdogs too powerful

The powers that be found a way to shut people up by giving them either two options when socializing online:

1. You can tell it to a celebrity who doesn't care
2. You can tell it to your family who probably already know

Indeed. That is why the internet is being cracked down on and wy social media platforms now blatantly act like publishers. Can't have people finding facts that exist external to acceptable narratives. That type of thing can startle the sheep.

But many are too lazy and are happy to consume the misinformation, especially if it feeds their inkling notions of prejudice. (not speaking strictly of race)

The knowledge that people are lazy and gullible is powerful.

Just ask Putin and Trump.

Very VERY well put.

In response, again, to the OP as well...

The herd have been herded to Facebook and Twitter
Two arenas where IF you express how you TRULY feel
you will most likely risk upsetting relations in your day to day life
relations who you depend on for work, commerce, etc

By dissolving anonymity and the masquerade originally celebrated on the webs, they are not only shutting people up but creating a society of fakes; people who only say what they believe others want to hear

..and no one ever learns anything from that approach.
