All:

Hello.

When is pride not a sin?

Is the song “Proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free”— is that a God-honoring way to show patriotism for your country (US)?

When is pride not a sin?

Answer:

From a Christian perspective, it is not a sin when your "pride" is actually a praise of god. When "you" are proud not because "you" think that "you" are so great, but rather you are proud of the fact that you accomplished something because god helped you... god guided you... god gave you the thing that you like. The "pride" is actually for god, not yourself. So in reality, it isn't really "pride". It is gratitude, thankfulness, appreciation, praise, etc. towards god.

Example:
Like when President Trump says, I am the greatest president ever!

When Trump says it that way his pride is actually for god not himself... it is thankfulness that god made him such a great and wondrous president; the best EVER.

See?

God himself shows his pride in Jesus so to say that pride is sin is to say that god is a sinner.

I adlib. -- In Jesus, I am well pleased.

That is pride in ones son.

Agree!
Too much of anything is bad / a sin.
Very few things are inherently bad.

.. gluttony is just too much eating
Sloth is just too much "resting" (?)

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.

I see sin and crime in about the same way and synonymous as both must create a victim to have their actions or thoughts named so.

Even if one shows extreme and un-earned pride, which is what scriptures describe as sin, --- I think, --- I don't think it fits the create a victim category.

FTPOV, pride is not a sin.

I am open to view any argument to refute this view.

Why? Who does it hurt, and what if it is earned?

By that I offer this example.

Are there no exceptions to your view?

Is it a sin to love too much?
Charity perhaps, altruism, empathy?

Pride has two antithetical meanings.

When used in reference to an inflated sense of status or accomplishment it has a negative connotation.

When used in reference to a feeling of satisfaction about one's choices or accomplishments it has a passive connotation.

Personally, I use the term hubris when referring to excessive pride so as to avoid confusion.

All of the deadly sins are excessive normal behavior.
