How dare they...!?

Facebook bans Louis Farrakhan, Milo Yiannopoulos, InfoWars and others from its platforms as 'dangerous'

Facebook announced Thursday afternoon that it had designated some high-profile people, including Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who's notorious for using anti-Semitic language, and right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, as "dangerous" and said it will be purging them from its platforms...

On Thursday, Jones and InfoWars will be barred from Instagram as well...

Other people banned on Thursday included Paul Nehlen, an anti-Semite who unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2016 and 2018, and fringe right-wing media personalities Laura Loomer, Milo Yiannopoulos and Paul Joseph Watson.

How dare they take so long in doing this?

It should have been done a long time ago.

How can they do that?

Isn't that infringing on their freedom of speech?

Posting on Facebook is a god-given right spelled out in our constitution!
I know so, because I read it ...

Yeah, nothing like a good old fashioned book burning. If you don't agree kick them out. That would never happen a TFS, that's for sure.

Slippery Slope when we stat banning.

I thought about that too ...

But it is not preventing them from spreading lies and fear elsewhere, by other means on the net.

I don't agree that it is a slippery slope at all.

If it were the government doing this, sure... but it isn't.

It is a company, owned by people not the government.

So the echo chamber will only hear itself and become an increasingly smaller world. Only like-minded thinkers need apply.

Keep it up and facebook will discover what happened to MySpace.

Excellent description of the Trump administration - Fox News relationship.

Well done!

And even on Fox News, some are starting to pull away from Trump.

There's the nub of it. Facebook.... like TFS.... is a website. It is not state owned or run by any government. The owners can have anybody they like for a member, and by the same token, delete any member who they consider expresses views that are inconsistent with their values.

Speaking for myself, I would want to see what people have to say so I can argue with them.... disagree with them.... challenge them.

That's why I don't put anybody on block. I may not like that person and disagree vehemently with their point of view, but I want to see what they have to say I can challenge it. Nor would I want anybody who disagrees with me banned or blocked for the same reason.

THAT's freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of liberty in our societies. It's a natural right and we must defend it.

But.... and there's always a 'but', right..?...... That liberty comes with a responsibility. Freedom to say what we think is essential. But does it have to be accompanied by images and videos...? Particularly if those images or videos were illegal or extremely abhorrent.

The freedom to say what one thinks is also another person's freedom to challenge any argument made. By all means say what you think, but don't expect not to be called out if your views are extreme or offensive.

Challenging another person's viewpoint is not necessarily intolerance. If a rational counter argument is made then that is fair game.

But theoretically, anybody who DID want to make supportive messages towards such people, or make a case for, well, whatever, should be able to do so. The responsibility lies in making it a rational and intellectual argument that is objective and open to challenge.

The mere gainsay of supporting a cause that society - rightly - finds abhorrent, or of making an argument in lurid and explicit terms is not behaving responsibly as somebody exercising their liberty should.

In our countries we have a very precious right and we should defend it as vehemently as we use it. But it shouldn't be used as a weapon, or a vehicle to offend, promote crime or as a cunning means of sidestepping either the law or norms of civilised society.

Use it by all means. Defend it, certainly. But don't abuse it will ill intent.
