Hi all,

So, I want to get some kind of games console. I'm happy to buy second hand and it doesn't need to be the latest version, however, I would like it to be one where I could play against/with my friend when they're in a completely different location.

What's the best to go For?
Would we need an account to be able to talk to each other on it?

So you both are looking for a console, or does your friend already have one? If it’s the latter, then you have to get that particular one, as cross play (where you each have a different brand or iteration of console) is limited to certain games. Messaging each other is also limited to the same console. And yes, you would make an account with a user ID.

If you are both starting fresh, then it probably comes down to the type of games you want to play:

Nintendo = think cartoony and fun (Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, etc)
Sony/Xbox = think more graphically realistic, “mature” games (Uncharted, God of War, Witcher, Final Fantasy, etc).

As far as which version, the latest for Nintendo is the Switch. The latest for Sony is the PS4. And the latest for the XBox is the XBox One. The PS4 and the Switch are not backwards compatible (cannot play old games previously made for earlier console iterations). The XBox One is backwards compatible with XBox 360 games.

Nintendo’s Wii U, XBox’s 360, and the PS3 have their full slate of games, but you have to get everything secondhand now, including the consoles, as I don’t think they are being made anymore.

Don’t go back any further than that if you want online functionality.

I had so much fun playing Mario.

I'm not a gamer. The one's I played I wasn't good at.

I was a huge fan of Mario 64 and I bet there's something like that that's sooper dooper like Mario Sunshine.

Be well do good work and keep in touch.

Neither of us have a console. But would we have to pay for an account?

Thanks for your advice.

No problem!

Membership, and things like messaging, are free. But you have to play a monthly fee to play games online with the latest consoles ($5-$10 a month here - not sure what that translates to in your currency or if prices are different). Online gaming is free on older consoles though.

Nintendo's my favorite too

But over the past decade, since digital download came to be

PC gaming is really really really cheap

I'm talking a bundle of 8 current games, each selling for $60 a piece on console selling for $12 all together on PC.

We trade thirty dollar console games, on PC, like baseball cards valued around fifteen cents each.

PC is a pretty good choice here, but for a novice getting into games and looking just to have some fun in a really straighforward way - 100% the Nintendo Switch.

The games are fun and accessible but also some of the best available. With the switch you can have it as a tablet and bring it anywhere or play in bed or whatever and you can just pop it onto its dock by the tv to play on the big screen. It has a bunch of games and you can even play together online and alot of old nintendo games from the 80's and 90's online with a friend now.

You need to set up an account to play online, which you can do on the switch when you set it up for the first time, you can get an entire years supscription for 20 dollars though so no biggie.

the xbox and ps4 are a little more powerful so you won't get access to some of the new biggest games etc. but what it does have is solid gold, its a real leader in the market right now. Have fun!

This all started as we played an arcade game where we were both shooting zombies, we want to be able to do something like that!

You would enjoy Housemarque’s games then (Dead Nation, Alienation, Nex Machina, etc). Unfortunately these games are only found on the PS4 though, but they are some of the most enjoyable co-op games out there.
