Here it is:

Taken of a black hole at the center of the Messier 87 galaxy, 53.49 million light-years away.

Black holes up to this point have been impossible to photograph due to their distance from us, not to mention the problem of photographing something that eats up light rather than projects light (or an image).

Speaking of which, of course, this isn’t really a photo of a black hole, per se, but a photo of matter surrounding the black hole. The middle part is merely the absence of visibility, as all what was once observable matter is sucked from the area surrounding beyond the event horizon (the boundary between escapable and non-escapable light) and into a single point of infinite density, resulting in something that is some 6.5 billion times the mass of our sun.

Currently efforts are underway to photograph our own black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.

years ago, I read there is suppose a massive block hole in the middle of universe and I read there are also small black holes, as well.

Not to nit-pick, and I know everyone is using the term, so it's not you Leon ....

But is "Photograph" or "Photo" really the correct term? and I'm not speaking of the "blackness" in the middle.

Isn't it really a computer-generated image of data collected across the 8 radio telescopes around the world?

... I know .. "Photo" sounds cooler in the headlines.

Just sayin'

Not all that uncommon to use sources of imagery creation for deep space that aren’t simply “point and click” as we know photography to be. It’s too far.

It also should be pointed out that we are looking at an image of something that occurred 55 million years ago.

I heard from some sources the magnification it took to get this image was the equivalent of reading the date on a coin in New York from Los Angeles.

Shortly after I posted that, a local scientist was on a local news show discussing this. I noticed he did not use the word "photo", but used the proper term "Image"

And he described how it was made - almost word for word what I said

I like it when proper terms are used.

And, not to take away from the point made here (I agree, it’s HUGE), but, wow, our 70’s/80’s interplanetary probes have gotten pretty far!

Yes!
Scientists have realized that our "Solar System" - that which is influenced by our sun - extends way beyond the orbit of the planets.

They are detecting magnetic field "bubbles" out that far, which is further protecting us from interstellar particles and rays and ... bad stuff

Yes, the Solar System does not end at Pluto (or should we now say, Neptune? ). We have not only many further objects orbiting our sun, from small planetary-type bodies to comets, but we also have the Kuiper Belt, solar wind, heliosphere, etc.)

I also remember reading that some of the probes no longer communicate with us, but some still do.

No worries. I thought maybe you had the science forum blocked.
