Okay, so I’m going to have to disagree with her on this one. Kamala implies that Pence is not doing so because of his views on women in general. Pence has gone on record saying he won’t meet 1 on 1 with women out of loyalty to his wife.

I don’t see any problem with Pence’s reasons here. He didn’t say he doesn’t meet with women at all, just not in 1 on 1 situations. And, in fact, while may be a tad bit on the unnecessary side, I do see it as quite honorable.

Your thoughts?

I'm with you

She seems to be taking a 17-year old statement out of context.

That should be left to the realms of media and wing-nuts.

It sounds like he's just adhering to a practice of his church no one-on-one meals. (maybe that applies to meetings too, but I didn't see that stated)

And to side-bar (it's in the article)
Biden called Pence a decent guy.
Then walked it back saying there is nothing decent about being anti-LGBTQ rights.

That doesn't mean Pence is not decent. Just (at least) one of his views/beliefs is viewed/believed as wrong.

I don't eat veal for "moral" reasons (once saw a disgusting video). But I don't dismiss friends as horrible people when I find out that they do eat veal.

Pence is the antithesis of Trump when it comes to how he carries himself, which is probably why he was asked to be his running mate. Yes, his policies on social issues are, indeed, draconian, not to mention he is complicit with everything Trump does, but that’s Evangelical Christianity for you.

Regardless, Kamala is going to find herself sitting out at some point during the primaries next year if she speaks before thinking like this, much like Elizabeth Warren.

if he is denying meetings for work, (and doing government s*** is his job) it is sexist and discriminatory.

he can do what ever he wants on his free time, but just saying if her pulled that s*** as a CEO in a company with women on staff, there would be EEOO lawsuit.

There was no context given in this article with reference to job-related, or even a non-meal meeting.

Pence told The Hill in 2002 that he “never eats alone with a woman other than his wife,”

Not saying I like Pence, but this cherry-picking of history, out of context just to find mud to sling is already beyond ridiculous.

If it's not "eating alone with a woman" that's fine whatever, he can choose who he eats with. There are some men I wouldn't eat alone with. (Mike Pence being one of them)

However if it's related to work/government or whatever then he's a sexist pig. Is he afraid he'll whip his d*** out and ask her to pet it? Or is he afraid she'll come on to him? Like women can't just be near him for a professional reason?

also it won't let me read the actual article that they get the quote from because I'm not a subscriber, so I'm being fed half truths here.

Business meetings over a meal is a thing. Or even a more casual meal with coworkers, where you can talk shop. Or even get to know one better then float the cool or good projects their way. If he never eats alone with a man either, then it's ok, but in business inherently favoring one gender over the other is illegal. In some places, who gets assigned the projects or committees strongly determines your career trajectory.

Government meetings can be the same way. Getting a meal together, is sometimes part of significant negotiations. Say he has to meet with the leaders of the different parts of congress, and dinner time is the only time to do it. If he meets with McConnell and not Peloisi that is a sexist issue.

If his rule the "never" part is so inflexible that it does interfere in his job, it can be a thing. So to be "safe" he should never eat alone with anyone other than his wife. gender should be an issue, if eating is so special and sacred to him, he shouldn't do it with anyone other than his wife.

There is nothing inherently "sexy" about eating. it' sometimes necessary to eat with coworkers its not the same as going out on a date. I don't like to do it, but I have on occasion. Both in groups and one-on-one. Mostly I don't like to because of my allergy food restriction issues, so i don't want to come off really picky.

The way I see it he is just saying it cannot be in a 1 on 1, i.e. without others present. So could a solution be to just say that another person needs to be with him? His secretary, clerk... ? I don’t think it would be too difficult to arrange that without denying the meeting altogether. I don’t really see this particular approach as sexist, but just his way of maintaining trust with and showing loyalty to his wife, even if a bit extreme.

Note, I’m not denying his sexist views in regards to his beliefs towards women on social issues in general.

If the men get confidential access to him for business (government in this case) and women do not, it is an unfair and illegal situation.

So no a secretary or clerk does not make it better if it not also done with the men he may meet with privately.
