what you call walking in someone's shoes with bad foot's odor inside their shoes?

I don't know what you call it, a person with bad athlete feet. what does matter, I shoot the person instead!

Empathy is how one person feels that has walked a mile in the same shoes as the the person they feel Empathy for.

highly-social animals, such as humans, seem to have an awareness of one another's feelings.

It may be that empathy has evolved and increases the potential for survival of a species.

Pretty much

There was an outrage in France not so long ago because middle class Brady Bunch type women were concerned for the well being of dogs owned by street urchins; insisting their only company be taken away from them.

With some empathy or taking the time to think further and consider how the others in the situation not only feel but also as to what device they use to get by...

...It could be that the dog is self-sufficient while still the only living thing to provide the poor urchin company and may also be hunting / gathering opportunity for the vagabond.

Sure, the pampered and privileged women, making a stink, may think they are rescuing an animal but they are destroying a human in the process and in a situation where the symbiotic relationship may be working perfectly well for the animal.

Very seldom have I met people, especially women, with easy lives who still have the intellectual capability to think long and hard prior to interfering in another person's life.

The extra thinking that is required to exercise empathy.

Jack and Jill were walking when a mouse scurried by. Jack, who grew up on a farm where mice were vermon, squashed the mouse with the heel of his boot. Jill, who grew up in the suburbs where mice lived in little cages with a wheel to run in and were named fluffy, was horrified.

Now I can empathise with your characters in this tale.
I grew up on a ranch where we did all we could to take out every mouse/rat that came into our barn. After I was an adult I had a good friend that had three large white rats in cages and looked horrified when I chuckled while telling him what grandpa would say about feeding rats instead of killing them.

When someone dies, and you suffer emotionally for it, is this selfish?

If it is selfless, is it because you are reliving the suffering that person went through before death and/or because you are empathetic to others suffering emotionally over that person’s death?

we should probably distinguish between sadness, grief and bereavement. I am thinking that grief is an intense sadness caused by loss. I suppose sadness caused by loss could be considered selfish.

It is selfish. You are mourning the loss of something that was dear to you. You are feeling bad for the fact that YOU no longer have that person in YOUR life.

And I am not saying this as an indictment of people who grieve over the loss of someone...it's selfish but it's also natural and healthy and something I have done myself more than once.

Bereavement is a state of being when there is loss of someone who the bereaved felt affection while grief is the reaction to the loss. The response to loss (i.e., grief) has both physical and cognitive aspects. There is that visceral discomfort and there is the inability to focus on anything else. For me grief is my least favorite emotion, even worse than fear.

I would say that Grief is a natural response to loss of a loved one. The more you loved the more it hurts. One cannot not grieve when someone was loved was taken away.

Is a natural response selfish?

It helps reinforce the bonds of the tribe thus enhancing the unity of the tribe thus strengthening the tribe and increasing its likelihood of survival...

Or it could be a useless emotion that is a complete waste of time and should be jettisoned from our toolbox of emotions.
