What a great story of persistence for Gibbons. Hope he makes his shot in the AFL a success.

True. But it's better than last year. I'd love to see the top 22 women from all teams play an under 15 boys side that played in the finals but didn't win the GF from a typical suburban football league. I suspect the boys would win by 40/50 goals.

But, they are improving.

The U15 boys would smash them. I can wonder down the road and watch a much better standard involving players who actually have to pay to play. And they arent receiving elite coaching and nor do they have access to elite facilities.

What really gets on my goat with the AFLW and their supporters is this sense of entitlement. The men's games generates 100's of millions of dollars every year whilst the women's game loses millions. And yet people keep saying how it's not fair the women don't get paid as much as the men. To be honest I can't see how they can justify paying them anything at all. At the end of the day the players are entertainers and how much they earn should be directly related to the amount of money their actions generate. Why should money from the men's game have to go to fund the women's game? It would be like Ed Sheeran putting on a concert that attracts 50,000, and where people are typically paying upwards of $45 a ticket, whilst another singer is playing infront of a crowd of 1,500 where there is free entry. Sheeran's concert makes a big profit whilst the other singer's concert runs at a significant loss, but because both are on stage for a similiar period of time performing the same activity people believe that the total net from the concerts should be spread evenly.

I was reading an article a few days ago by an AFLW player who accused the AFL of being misogynists for holding the AFLX during prime time on Friday night. She stated that the AFLW should have been on at that time instead. And yet AFLX had 24,000 paying customers and won it's time slot whilst the following day the AFLW games attracted around 1,500 people who got in for free. The average ratings for the AFLW games was 39,000 NATIONALLY. The AFL and the broadcasters (as well as other media) have given A LOT of publicity to the woman's game but the reality is you simply can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

If we're being honest at least half of the 39000 that watched the women's game are men hoping one of the prettier girls gets 'dacked'.

Once the novelty of that wears off viewer numbers will be cut to a handful of angry, bitter lesbians and a wistful Alan, sorry, Helen Mouncey.

Being slightly more serious, everything you say is true. However, I am happy for the AFL to subsidise the game for awhile to see it if takes off. The standard has improved, but it has a long way to go.

For how long should it be subsidised? The AFL won't fund a team in Tassie that would end up making money but lose millions every year flogging the AFLW. Grass roots footy is also crying out for funding.

To me it's a case of women looking at men making a living out of playing football and thinking that they therefore must be able to do the same. Just because you want to be a professional footballer doesnt mean you have some inherent right to be so. Just like no one has the right to make a good living out of singing/playing music. Here the left in general, and feminists in particular, need to understand that an equal outcome is not the same as equal opportunity. Infact, an equal outcome is only ever obtained by unequal opportunity.

Note - the women's teams of Carlton and c'wood met at Princes Park where only 3,000 turned up despite free entry. Days earlier over 8,000 PAID to watch Carlton play a practice match at the same ground.

I'd give it 5-10 years.

I honestly doubt it will succeed. It will either attract pretty girls and be a novelty thing for guys to watch, or, it'll attract butch girls, and no one will care. People will pretend for awhile, but then it will fade away as women prefer watching well toned men to large, masculine women...

Both true. Although the AFL has billions of dollars to throw around. Money is not the issue.

I'm still spewing that Fitzroy (my team) didn't go to Tassie. Or better yet the AFL could have reimbursed us for money spent developing AFL in Sydney just to Sth Melbourne reap all the benefit.

The AFL do indeed have lots of money but most of it is already committed. The AFL is a gravy train, players also take a huge slice whilst money is being poured into the non footballing states. The end result was that little is put aside for grassroots footy. And then along came the AFLW which loses millions every year, and to what end?

As for Fitzroy. They were totally shafted by the AFL. It really seemed like the AFL set them up to fold re the whole Nauru Insurance Company thing. I'm not a Fitzroy fan but I was very sad to see them go. And the AFL didnt even give them any sort of a send off. That was left to Freo.

By the way, Fitzroy won the VAFA Premier C GF last year. I have a mate who is a fan of the Roys and watches them play when he can. He speaks highly of the atmosphere at home games.

Over the past decade the AFL's own polls show btw 70-75% of fans want the GF to remain in it's traditional time slot. Despite this, every bloody year the AFL commission meet to determine when the GF will be played. Why can't they respect the views of the fans and at least say that for the next 5 years the Grannie will start at 1430hrs.

On the Grannie, really sick to death of comparisons being made with the bloody SB. Aussie Rules doesnt need fireworks and all that rubbish to create a special event. The match stands on it's own. If it was down to me we would have "Up there Cazaly" sung followed by the national anthem and then we would be into it. At half time keep the sprint and have a longest kick comp...nothing else needed.
