Cell
(Stephen King novel / another bad zombie movie)

When a strange signal pulsates through all cell phone networks worldwide, it starts a murderous epidemic of epic proportions when users become bloodthirsty creatures, and a group of people in New England are among the survivors to deal with the ensuing chaos after.

OH my goodness gracious. We are doomed.

What could that nice president Trump do with this alert thing?

Could he block all interpersonal communication?

I suppose with a flood of messages someone could create a Denial of Service attack.

I know once in awhile we get alert storms from work and 150 or so message come in 1 second apart, and you have to "Read Now" or "Read Later" as they come in before you can use the phone ... well, at least that's how it works on my flip-phone.

Locally, someone hacked the emergency sirens a few years back and kept turning them on until the city had to disable them until a more secure system was put in place - at a big cost.

In 2018, a remote Alaskan community’s infrastructure was hit by a malware attack which forced it offline. It was only then they realised how much they depended on computers.

Mat-Su

In the borough’s purchasing department, staff faced filling out forms with pen and ink while their computers sat idle. Then they had a bright idea. In the cupboard were a couple of old electronic typewriters. They dusted them off and used them.

The End Is Near!!

I've always been hesitant about storing things "in the cloud" for fear somehow, someway I'll lose access to it.

#1 Google+ announces End of Life April 2nd
I don't think I use it, but for those that do / did, now they have some scrambling to do so they don't lose access to whatever is in there.

#2 "UltraViolet" - Some streaming company.
Awhile back I bought a DVD that came with a Free UltraViolet account so I can stream my movie Anywhere!!
Well, I just got an email that the service will be shutting down.
There's some mumbo-jumbo about if the UV account is linked to another vendor you will still have access - and I'm fine because I'm hooked up through Vudu (and I still have the physical disk)

- but it still points out how these things can be volatile and potentially lose access to something you've purchased or stored.

I suspect in a generation or two things like the cloud and disks will be considered quaint

Hmm..

Imagine not being able to access your money for a day or two.
Wells Fargo

It's not clear if that incident was connected to one at a data center Wells Fargo keeps in Minnesota, where a fire suppression system was accidentally tripped early Thursday morning,

With the crap going on here

Can you blame them?

The test is also expected to involve ISPs demonstrating that they can direct data to government-controlled routing points. These will filter traffic so that data sent between Russians reaches its destination, but any destined for foreign computers is discarded.

Eventually the Russian government wants all domestic traffic to pass through these routing points. This is believed to be part of an effort to set up a mass censorship system akin to that seen in China, which tries to scrub out prohibited traffic.

So I open an incognito window with the intent of setting up a new Facebook account. ...One was already created *for me* by my spouse, and occasionally I'll get a link to FB from her, so the account is kind of used....

Anyways, even in the incognito window it automatically logged me in???
So I log out, and then I set up my new account - no similar names , and immediately it asks "Do You Know ..." and it listed "friends" from my other account ...
Not that it's a big deal, but just confirms even more that everything is tracked.

And I'm signing up on FB because there's another site I want to check out, and they require a FB login .... f #@Tin everything is pushing to this social media s***.

... just b****in'...

Oops

"As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from MySpace," the firm said in a statement.

"We apologize for the inconvenience."

And you thought it was just a paranoid joke:

Amazon reportedly employs thousands of full-time workers and contractors in several countries, including the United States, Costa Rica and Romania, to listen to as many as 1,000 audio clips in shifts that last up to nine hours.
...
In a response to the story, Amazon confirmed CNN Business that it hires people to listen to what customers say to Alexa.

Alexa, G F Y!!

.. now I'm starting to wonder about the story that the NSA reads everyone's email
