What are some of your favorite Holiday movies?

For me a few are:

White Christmas
Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (original animated version and Jim Carrey’s version)
Home Alone

A Christmas Vacation
... Yeah - parts are still funny - though I'm not particularly a Chevy Chase fan.

Home Alone is a very good Christmas movie.

We enjoy all the Christmas standards such as It's A Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol (George C Scott version), and of course, Love Actually.

But is it really all about movies..? What about other TV..?

I recently mentioned the ballet, especially The Nutcracker, which is a beautiful Christmas production. My mum took me to see the Royal Ballet's production at the Festival Hall when I was about 9 and I loved it.

Another Christmas perennial here is Carols From Kings on Christmas Eve. Full of atmosphere and beautiful singing. Even if you don't watch it, just having it on the TV to play as you go about doing other things is special.

The BBC production of Twelfth Night from the 1970's is always worth watching as a re-run. Made on the tightest of budgets and performed on sets that move as much as the actors, it's still a marvellous watch. Robert Hardy IS Sir Toby Belch and the young and beautiful Felicity Kendall positively shines. Wonderful.

And then, of course, there is Blackadder's Christmas Carol. Sooooooooo funny. The Blackadder boys (Rowan Atkinson, Tony Robinson, Tim McInerney, et al) turn Christmas dinner into a dog's dinner. It's hard to believe that this brilliant variation, where Scrooge starts out as a kind and gentle benefactor, but becomes mean and callous when he gets fed up with being taken advantage of by everybody. Full of brilliant one-liner's from the savage pen of Ben Elton it's a laugh fest that I could watch every year and never get fed up with.

Not suitable for beadles, orphans, nieces, or long dead members of the Royal Family.

This is an official sidebar conversation and not an official effort to derail the thread but .. . yeah.

That's me watching the video. Pops and scratches to confirm it's an lp.

Not feeling Christmas much anyway.

Die Hard

Don't you mean Dai Hard, who played Rugby for Wales back in the 1980's..?

There have been a number of good movies that have come out of Taffywood down the years:

A Room With A Pugh
Bangor Management
Bend It Like Brecon
Cool Hand Look You
Dai Another Day
Huw Dini
Midnight Cowboyo
Paint Your Dragon
Saving Private Rhiannon
Sheepless In Seattle
20'000 Leeks Under The Sea

Perhaps their best Christmas offering though would be

The Wizard of Oswestry.

I heard about him. Apparently, the undertaker was unable to get the lid on his coffin.

I believe some consider Die Hard to be a Christmas movie because the story occurs at Christmas Eve. A rather loose connection in my opinion, but that's just my view. Die Hard could have taken place at any time of year and it wouldn't have made any difference to the plot / action at all.

Personally, I consider a Christmas movie to be one where the time of year itself is central to the story or a significantly meaningful connection to Christmas exists.

"Love Actually" takes place in the weeks running up to Christmas and has a strong theme of people coming together for the holiday. The final sequence, in the arrivals lounge at Heathrow is really touching and leaves you with the sort of "feelgood" that Christmas films - again, in my opinion - should impart.

"It's A Wonderful Life" is a film where most of the story doesn't take place at Christmas, and yet, the story, throughout the film, is clearly intended to come to a climax on Christmas Eve. Unlike Die Hard, it could ONLY have worked by building up to Christmas as it did.

One film that was shown on British television at Christmas - and just about every other holiday throughout the year - for many, many years was "The Great Escape".... a movie that was about a WWII prisoner of war breakout. It had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Christmas or any holiday, but its appearance in the schedules - often at Prime Time - eventually became a national joke.

I guess a Christmas movie can be anything anybody wants it to be, but I know what I consider to be a movie for the holiday and I stick with that.

Take the movie Gremlins as an example. Gremlins could be considered a Christmas movie and yet oh no why it's so scary and violent with all the monsters. No frosty or baby Jesus or not one stitch of a shining star above the manger or hay or wise men or Mr Scrooge.

Alas, it is true. Christmas is whatever you say it will be.
