How soon do you listen to Christmas music? Depending on my mood I start as early as a week before halloween, or as late as the day after Black Friday. I’m only asking because:

1: I’m very board.
2: I don’t have many friends. My number of friends decreased throughout the years.
3: I’m curious to see what you guys do.

Hi

I can send you ideas, playlists, songs, albums, etc. if you like. Out of all my playlists I make every year, my Christmas playlist is always the biggest. I make it in November and edit it as time goes on. By Thanksgiving, I no longer change it.

wait until Christmas Eve and just listen at the church close to your apartment. Christmas is better when it’s just a day long

it’s better when you skip it every now and again

Most popular Christmas songs make no bloody sense in our part of the world. Hard to listen to music going on about snow when it's 40c outside! This one from our brothers across the ditch though makes a lot more sense...

I love to stop in the high street when we're Christmas shopping in Truro and the Salvation Army band are playing.

They play a selection of popular carols and Christmas songs, and create a lovely Christmassy atmosphere while raising a lot of money to help the homeless. The "Sally Army" bands are popular all over the country.

When I was a girl, the elderly gent, Dennis, who used to do the school crossing patrol (lollipop man) on my way to school was in the Salvation Army. He played the b flat cornet in the band. When my sisters and I went Christmas shopping in Woolwich, the band were always there, playing in the market square just across from the gates of the old Woolwich Arsenal (now a prison..!!)

My sisters would hurry me along but I'd wave to him he'd nod to me without missing a note. He worked for the church all year round, going out on Saturday nights with other Salvation Army members, selling their magazine, "The War Cry" to raise money. Sometimes they'd rock up at Blackheath Rugby when the social club was in full swing. Everybody knew Dennis and he knew we would all buy a War Cry on one condition: He had to get up on the stage and sing.

Dennis would get up and sing "The Old Rugged Cross." Wonderful. The applause was always thunderous. Everybody would buy all the magazines, paying over the odds for a copy, and then give them back so they could sell them again elsewhere. The Salvation Army did pretty well out of Blackheath RFC.

Dennis was one of the loveliest men I ever knew and when I came home from uni for a weekend once, and my mum told me that it had been in the local paper that he'd died, it was so sad.

But... getting back on topic.

So, for me, it will always be the Salvation Army band that makes me feel the most Christmas like. And when I hear them, I think of old Dennis, who played the sweetest cornet and used too call me 'Poppet' when I crossed the road to school in the mornings, in all weathers, rain or shine.

Some people, and the things they did, matter just a bit more at a special time like Christmas.

If the band are playing in your market square this year, drop a pound (or a dollar) in the bucket. It does go to a good cause, run by good people.

Typically I don't intentionally go to listen to Christmas music...Like I don't seek it out specifically. I guess my family starts playing it in the house and in our cars after Thanksgiving though.

My favorite Christmas song is "O Holy Night" and honestly, it's not the words, it's because I think the music itself is beautiful and it really moves me.

Do you have televised carol services over there..?

Every Christmas Eve, Auntie Beeb screens the Carol service from the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge. It's a very atmospheric event and we usually have it on the TV even if we don't watch it all... it's nice to have on, with the music and the choir, around tea time on Christmas Eve, just as the evening is drawing in.

Last year, we were all going around, busying ourselves about our business while it was on when suddenly, Amanda tugged on my sleeve and whispered "Come and see this."

We peered around the lounge door and there was Megan, sitting on the floor, watching the Carol service... well into it....

I don't think we've ever seen our mini-tsunami sit still for that long before.

Carols From Kings is a bit of a TV tradition on Christmas Eve here. I just wonder if there is any equivalent on your side of the pond.

Here you go, Eagle, mate. Enjoy......

I also do not seek out Christmas music however i work in a retail environment where it gets played from the day after Black Friday until New Years Eve. Yes it is the hell that it sounds like.

I strongly believe that Last Christmas by Wham should be banned on the basis that it is in bad taste given that George Michael died of heart failure on Christmas, oh and also because the song is awful. Chris Rhea has made a living off of Driving Home For Xmas he probably never had to right another song but I suspect This is the Road to Hell should've been a B side to Driving Home for Xmas.

The Only Christmas song I like is All I Want for Christmas, and it's not for the lyrics

I truly have sympathy for your plight @ working in retail with piped music being relentlessly churned out over and over. I would go further to say that any music.... often of the most banal kind... being played constantly.... all day.... every day.... would drive me to distraction.

But surely there must be some Christmas songs you like..?

Have you ever listened to this album..?

We love this album. For my money, the best ever compilation of Christmas songs (closely followed by Nat King Cole).

If you've never played it, then go on, give it a go. You've got nothing to lose but your Bah Humbug..!!
