Have you ever wished for a happy ending of your own? Did the thought ever appear after seeing a certain film that you enjoy, or have enjoyed?

I get that feeling. I feel like it may ruin things for me. I’m not a big romance movie guy, but I usually the ones Hallmark puts out during the Holiday season. After seeing one, or a few of those films, I always find myself in the same boat of wishing I had such a happy ending, where I find someone who falls for me during the holidays. I realize how stupid I sound and how ridiculous this may be, but that’s how it is. I no longer feel bad for myself for remaining single, but I am hard on myself for allowing it to get this far. I know I’m socially awkward and I don’t say things that make sense. I tend to stay quiet and my anxiety hasn’t gone away as of yet, but here I am.

When I was a little kid we took a field trip to Austin Texas around Christmas time and saw a ballet called the nutcracker suite. It was pretty fancy. There was a giant Christmas tree that grew the size of the building. They were dancing mice and there was a guy with the weird mask with the sword that fought the mice and won.

But the most memorable visit to the nutcracker suite happened about 25 years ago in Amarillo Texas when I and a few college buddies sat and enjoyed it.

I believe that very very very very few people stay happy and relationship. Eventually those relationships turn to marriage and I’m guessing maybe 10% of those marriages last where they are actually happy. Maybe the best response would be to reduce our expectations for “the holiday season” and the warm fuzzy goodness that we get from relationship

Nothing wrong with wanting a happy ending.

Sure, the odds are against "you", but so what.

My parents has a "happy ending". The fell in love... lived... made mistakes... forgave each other... ended up with 50+ years of marriage that was only ended by the "until death do you part" thing.

Both sets of my grand parents also had long marriages full of love and friendship.

Me... I haven't figured out the formula yet, but still wish for the happy ending.

When you hear, "And they lived happily ever after" at the end of a story, you have to remember it is just a fairy tail.

How old are you? 23? is your ending near? you have a ton of life in front of you, don't despair a happy ending might just be in your future if not a happy ending because does anyone really get a happy one? A fitting ending might be more appropriate or at least an ending not filled with regrets. Although remember regrets are about the chances you didnt take......

Once upon a time there was a puppy chasing its tail. An older dog asked the puppy what he was doing. The puppy said his tail was happieness and if he could only catch it he would have happieness. The older dog said, "silly pup, just walk along and your happieness will follow you wherever you go.

Happiness is like a wet bar of soap. The harder you attempt to hold it the faster it slips away.

An excellent post and thank you for bringing back a flood of warm and happy childhood memories to me on a cold and miserable Friday morning before I have to get my daughter up for school and another day's work begins all over again.

Before I start though, a bit of pedantry, but it matters. The Nutcracker is a ballet in two acts. It's not a "suite". Yes, that may come across as pedantic but it matters to some.

The dance school I used to attend as a girl put on two shows every year at our local community hall. One in the summer and one just before Christmas. It was mostly parents and family who attended, but the Jubilee School of Dance Summer / Christmas Show always performed to a full house.

For the Christmas show when I was 12, among our set, we performed a selection of dances from The Nutcracker. A girl named Michelle got the part of Clara which was OK with me because she really was the best dancer and I was too inhibited at that time to be "front and centre".

The showcase included the four sweet dances (I was a soloist in the Chinese Tea Dance with a boy named Russell who was really nice. Probably the only boy I ever liked at that age) and finished with the Dance of the Snowflakes (it makes me laugh to remember that now, because the term "Snowflake" has become a pejorative here for anti-Brexit campaigners. Once a snowflake, always a snowflake..!! Hahaha).

At the summer show earlier that year, we'd included a selection of dances from Swan Lake (more Tchaikovsky / Petipa / Ivanov. Our teacher did love her Russian ballets..!!) and I was in the Dans de Quatre , known as La Dans des Petits Cygnes. My dad got it on video. I used to get sooooo shy when he showed it to people. I was always very self conscious in a tutu.

I loved the The Nutcracker though. Usually, ballet instruction, training and practice were hard enough as it was, but rehearsing for a show that would take place in front of the public and all our parents was doubly tough. Rehearsing for that particular one though was a pleasure.

I've never thought of it as being any sort of "happy ending", rather, dance is something I'm glad I did as a child and learned life skills such as discipline, hard work, perseverance and satisfaction at something well done that I've taken into adult life.

I sometimes find myself wondering what might have been if I had chosen to do that instead of, at 14, opting for academic studies.

I was studying for 13 GCSE's and it was impossible to fit dance into my life along with all the work needed to get my grades. I could have taken fewer exams (did I really need Religious Studies, Spanish and Sociology..?) and still gone on to do the A Levels I wanted, but at 14 it's not easy to make clear headed choices about the future, especially when you're gay, in a relationship with a classmate, and having to keep that secret, not to mention dealing with the doubts and the demons in the mind that being homosexual at that age brought in those darker days when homophobia was far, far more rife.

So yeah, I do sometimes wonder what might have been but I don't regret anything. Everything has worked out well. I've made a good and happy life. I have my wife, my daughter, my home and family and a good standard of living. My studies back then were successful so I went on to higher education and gained a profession, which, although opportunities to get back into that when I return to work are limited in this part of the world, I'm confident I'll find my niche when that time comes.

Life is what you make it, or in the words of John Lennon: "Life is what happens while you're busy making other plans". I had that time as a child and can look back on it with fondness. Perhaps such things belong to childhood and are meant to be looked back on in that way..... to tell you that however crap life might be at any given time, you can take comfort in knowing that it wasn't always that way, and you can have hope that the future will be better. It's up to you.

So, everybody..... click on the links now, and enjoy a couple of scenes from Tchaikovsky ballets. The sets and costumes when I danced these scenes weren't so extravagant or sumptuous (our snowflake wands were made of sticks with a tennis ball stuck on the end, painted white and sprinkled with silver glitter. Actually... it worked..!! they looked good..!!), and perhaps we weren't quite as perfect in our performance but we made it magic for our audience.

And I can always say "I did this, you know." That's good enough for me.

For your entertainment and cultural edification. Ballet. Isn't it beautiful...?

And Tiny Tim who did NOT die . . .

. . . he moved silently down through the centuries, living many secret lives, struggling to reach the time of the Gathering; when the few who remain will battle to the last.

There can be only one God in three persons bless us all Father Son and Holy Spirit! From hells hot, I stab at thee!!
