Basically, do you think that having anxiety or panic attacks should be labeled a psychological condition? I mean I know it's a legitimate diagnosis under the DSM, but do you think it SHOULD be?

Isn't anxiety in the mind?

The way it was explained to me, or at least how I understood what was explained to me, is that everyone has anxiety. When anxiety becomes so intense that it makes it difficult to function it is a mental disorder.

I am not sure if anxiety is innate, learned, or a combination. It seems to me that it has evolved over time to increase the potential for survival. Those with anxiety tended to survive and pass on the trait to progeny going all the way back to prehistory.

Afterthought:

There is, as I understand it, a difference between anxiety and fear. It may be that fear has evolved as a self preservation mechanism.

What is the difference between anxiety and fear?

Fear is a response to immediate danger

Anxiety is anticipation of impending harm.

Is that correct?

Fight flight response to danger = fear = good

Anxiety may be anticipation of a future event (real or imagined) that may cause harm.

Anxiety may be more akin to worry.

As a child I had anxiety about the monster that lived under my bed. This was, of course, baseless as there was really no monster under my bed. Actually the monster was in my closet. And ...and I am pretty sure it is still there.

Monsters and demons are generally considered imaginary, only existing in the mind, and I have to agree but the one in my closet, that one is real. Especially when I forget to take my medication.

Anyone notice how, for once, I opted to not be verbose... and how I didn't try to highjack this topic?

I DON'T REALLY FEEL QUALIFIED TO SAY, BUT, I WILL SAY THAT ANXIETY SEEMS TO BE EXTREMELY COMMON NOW...ESPECIALLY IN THE YOUNGER GENERATION.

If you are not anxious you just do not understand what is going on.

in my 20's, always some sort of anxiety attacks. you right can betrigger by fear, and nervousness.

I finally outgrown my panic attacks. most of problems, I was immaturely to handle things.

people told me just grow up and face to your responsibility like a man, they know I was.

the panic attacks stop.

panic attacks are symptoms for mental illness, as well as diseases that you in inherit. or not.

anxiety disorders are quite real!
