BREAKING NEWS: (relatively) Unsuccessful attempts by Russian Hackers:

Evidence of 21 states were targeted .
" Liles said of the 21, a small number were attempted for an intrusion unsuccessfully, "as if someone rattled the door knob and was unable to get in," and in a small number "they made it through the door."

aka no real news here.
Probably thousands of companies are targeted, unsuccessfully on a daily basis.

However,
Who needs Russian Hackers when you have GOPers!
Personal information for more than 198 million American voters was left exposed this month after a data analytics firm hired by the Republican National Committee stored the files on an unsecured Amazon server.

Verizon confirmed on Wednesday the personal data of 6 million customers has leaked online.
The security issue, uncovered by research from cybersecurity firm UpGuard, was caused by a misconfigured security setting on a cloud server due to "human error."
The error made customer phone numbers, names, and some PIN codes publicly available online. PIN codes are used to confirm the identity of people who call for customer service.
No loss or theft of customer information occurred, Verizon told CNN Tech.

https://money.cnn.com/2017/07/12/technology/verizon-data-leaked-online/index.html

Well, yeah - if you give it away, it's not theft.

O'Sullivan says the Verizon case highlights how many third-parties have access to our personal data.
"Cyber risk is a fact of life for any digital service," O'Sullivan said. "As data becomes more powerful and more accessible, the potential consequences for it to be misused also becomes more dangerous."

.. you're singing to the choir buddy...

I get the feeling that few TFSers have stayed at Trump Properties , so this data breach may not affect anyone here.

And besides, this is an unabashed bump of my own thread.

Well, not so much as paranoia, but more of a disappointment. (another technology peeve that lends to my Luddite-ism)

So, I've been using and old LG phone as just a 'round the house IP device ... mainly Pandora. Been working well for that purpose. (android 2.3.4)

Then my son upgraded his phone and another Samsung became available to use as same (android 4.0.4). So I'm trying to set that up with apps, I figure, since it's newer, it should do more! ... btw, he always complained Skype crashed it.
So I get Pandora, Google Newsstand, Some random simple game (bricks-type) and confirmed Skype crashes it. But even without Skype the damn thing locks up.
It even wigs out trying to use the camera...wtf?!?

I'm just tired of technology not meeting expectations. If they advertise all these cool, new features and apps and games, they should work!

I was recently in a meeting with a vendor about some problems I've been having with hardware. They basically said "Yeah, you're on a family of code that sucks, but you can't get off until you buy new hardware"

Fargin' Technology!!

f***ing Science (warning, the above link requires you to either whitelist forbes, or login through facebook or google.... f***ing forbes)
Facebook shut down an artificial intelligence engine after developers discovered that the AI had created its own unique language that humans can’t understand.

f***ing media
Batra called certain media reports "clickbaity and irresponsible." What's more, the negotiating agents were never used in production; it was simply a research experiment.

Other researchers have been critical of the fear-mongering reports on social media in recent days.

Google is biased.

Through various means my interest was piqued for the movie The Commitments.
So, what else but Google it...
In the Google sidebar there is a section "Available on:"
And it lists YouTube $3.99, Vudu $3.99, Amazon $3.99..etc
Everything in the list was a cost.

So I go to my Roku and search there - and Low and Behold - It's included with NetFlix!!

So why the hell didn't Google list Netflix on it's "Available on:" section??
I'm sure The Big G knows that I have a NetFlix account with all their spiders and monkeys and bots crawling all over the web out there.
It just wants to suck me into the the big digital payment cesspool of the Internet. If they don't catch your credit card number on a purchase, they'll tease the gullible into a "free trial" .. just enter your cc # here! (and don't forget to cancel ... if you can bwahahahahaa )
Or the iPhones, Androids and games that are designed to psychologically addict you to their endorphin producing algorithms...

I used it in another thread, but "Chains of Technology" is a damn good name for something...
(I Googled it, and there seems to be only 1 decent reference out there to a paper or something someone wrote back in 2007. I haven't read it yet, but I will)

Chains of Technology

Though generally speaking I agree and understand this paper written 10 years ago, the author seems fixated on solitude.
(and the writing style seems a little cumbersome to me)

I still think it would be a cool name for a band, album or song ....

So, some guy knocks on my door asking something about what internet provider I use. My dogs were barking and dinner was on the table and I simply said "I'm not interested" and shut the door.
I watch, and he's parked in my drive, and he pulls out and drives down the street. .. I happen to notice he has something like a smartphone mounted on his dash.
... Now, wouldn't some salesman hit multiple houses in one stop?
Also, he had a strong accent (Russian, or East European if I had to guess) ...

Is this someone in the neighborhood trying to jack into my wi-fi?
Maybe to send out some auto-web-malware-bots to take control of the world banking system or something?

Or am I just being paranoid??

Is that a black helicopter patrolling my neighborhood?

Officials in PyeongChang acknowledged that the Games were hit by a cyberattack during the Feb. 9 Opening Ceremonies but had refused to confirm whether Russia was responsible. That evening there were disruptions to the Internet, broadcast systems and the Olympics website. Many attendees were unable to print their tickets for the ceremony, resulting in empty seats.

Olympics Hacked

IF I ever get flash-seats or electronic tickets, I immediately print them.
And I still hold my breath as I go through the gates.

This falls somewhere between No s*** and Told ya so ....

Analytics

UK:
"It's part of our ongoing investigation into the use of data analytics for political purposes which was launched to consider how political parties and campaigns, data analytics companies and social media platforms in the UK are using and analysing people's personal information to micro target voters," she added.

Couldn't have said it better myself

Cambridge Analytica CEO Aleander Nix sent an email that said he had reached out to Assange in attempt to access emails from Clinton's private server in hopes to create a searchable database of the emails for the campaign or a pro-Trump political action committee, according to two sources.

If they do it for politics, don't you think it's also in place for corporations?
