Billy the kid rolled back the clock and it's great to hear that he is going around for at least one more season.

A solid opening hit out for Australia in the 2017 RL World Cup. Australia dominated territory and possession but looked a little rusty at times. They wouldn't have been happy with their completion rate, esp in the opening half.

For their part England's defence was generally well organised and they showed on a number of occasions that they pose a real threat in attack. The 18-4 scoreline wasn't a true reflection of the match as a whole.

I'm sure both teams should be better for the match.

Absolute cracking game btw Tonga and NZ. Tonga had never defeated a tier 1 rugby side and had never progressed past the group stages of a world cup. The Kiwis not surprisingly went in as strong favourites and at half time they were cruising 16-2. They started the second half a little down in intensity and a fired up Tonga pounced. In the end they showed class and poise to cause a boil over and win 28-22. Their first ever win over NZ. The win means Tonga top their group and are a great chance to make the semi finals where England should await. For NZ, the loss now means they are in Australia's half with the trans-Tasman rivals set to meet in the semis.

In Australia's last 8 world cup matches the lads have not conceded a single point in the 2nd half. The boys are also undefeated in World Cup matches since 2008.

Rugby League World Cups have always been very predictable up to the semi finals. Not so this year. First there was Tonga's shock win over NZ, and then today Fiji knocked the kiwis out of the cup in the quarter finals. A world cup without NZ in the semis seems so surreal. There is now every chance the semis will be England v Tonga and Australia v Fiji.

Amazing semi final btw Tonga and England. With 7 mins to go England lead 20-0. The came an incredible late Tongan surge that perhaps should have taken them to victory. With a couple of mins to go they had fought back to 20-18 and England looked rattled. Then with only seconds to go they looked like they had scored the winning try only for the ref to signal a knock on for what looked like an illegal strip. Quite why the ref didnt go to the TMO is beyond comprehension.

To the credit of the Tongan players not one complained about the extremely tough call in those dying seconds. Indeed the Tongan team and their supporters have been the highlight of this world cup. Even at 20-0 down the Tongan supporters were singing. After the controversial finish the supporters were still singing...as were the players. They were all class.

For England, they are now into their first world cup final in 22 years.

Well it was a cup final for the purists. A really tough, physical game. In the end Australia stretched their test winning run to 13 games straight (Mal is yet to lose a match as coach) whilst the Aussies won their 11th world cup. For england, they really battled extremely hard but in the end they became the first team to ever fail to score in a world cup final. Indeed, during the world cup they went 155 mins of play against Australia without scoring so much as a point.

What a year it's been for Smith, Slater and Cronk. The NRL premiership with Melbourne, state of origin victory with Queensland and now the world cup with Australia.

Mal has also become the first person ever to win the world cup as a captain and then as a coach.
