Meanwhile, the silliness goes on. Britain's "firm stand" with the EU really puts Britain in the driving seat of negotiations:

March 2017: An early meeting with EU negotiators went something like this:

David Davis: "We absolutely must have trade talks alongside exit talks. It simply cannot work any other way. We said so several times in the Article 50 letter. We are immovable on this point. If the EU says no, it will be the fight of the summer"

Fast forward to June 19th:

David Davis: "Please can we do the talks in parallel?"
EU: "Non."
David Davis: "OK."

20th June.

David Davis (to UK press): "As I said all along, these sequential talks are ideal. Absolutely what we were aiming for."

So, having threatened "The Row of the Summer" on his determination to have no discussion on an EU divorce bill without trade talks running in parallel, the Brexit Secretary has climbed down two days before the Solstice heralded the first day of summer.

It sounds more like "The Submission of Spring" to me.

Paul Dacre, editor of the extreme right-wing toilet roll The Daily Mail, who doesn't quite hate the European Union enough to refuse the subsidies that he receives from it for his country estates in Sussex and the Scottish Highlands, had a disappointing election night apparently.

It's been revealed that the doddery expletive rag that he publishes had prepared a triumphant front page to greet Teresa May's landslide victory, complete with a Union Flag and the headline "Now Let's Get On With Brexit"

Alas the 10pm exit poll foiled these plans and Dacre is said to have slunk away from the Daily Mail offices shortly after.

I want to visit Rotherham, England in the near future. I hear it's a hotbed of inclusivity and tolerance.

Whatever a "Hotbed" is.

I've never visited Rotherham but I know that it's in Yorkshire.

Two things the first time visitor to Yorkshire needs to know.

a) A Yorkshireman is never wrong. Ever. On anything.

b) Every Yorkshireman will be happy to share his opinion with you....... for as long as it takes you to agree with him.

Beware any conversation that begins: "I'll tell thee, lad....."

Have fun.

After a trip to a right-wing conference in USA, Farage reassured listeners to LBC on his return that "Many people in North Carolina are very excited about Brexit."

So, if this whole EU negotiation thing goes wrong we'll at least be able to rely on trade with the Tar Heel State (GDP smaller than that of Norway).

But what kind of people did Nigel meet on his visit? At the Conservative Leadership Conference in Raleigh he shared a platform with people like gun enthusiast Paul Valone who argues that the UK's firearms ban "has resulted in an explosion of violent crime of every type" Valone prefers the US model which results in an annual gun death tally about 160 times that of the UK despite America having only 6 times the population..!!

Also on the bill were Writer John Fund who supports The Donald's claims of widespread pro-Democrat vote fraud and George Landrith, whose pressure group "Frontiers For Freedom" is currently leading a bizarre war on proposals to make hearing aids cheaper and available over the counter rather than on prescription as this would "expand the size and power of the Federal government."

And you thought Nigel's British chums were barking mad..!!

Thanks for the link which has nothing at all to do with Brexit.

OK, I see where you're going with this and I think we should knock this on the head now. I'll not have this thread de-railed by issues that have nothing to do with the subject matter.

I started this with the intention of highlighting the Brexit process as it unfolds, warts and all (and it's very warty).

Anyone who wishes to discuss BREXIT (and no other unrelated issue) is welcome to do so. Those who just wish to simply watch the unfolding disaster that is we have brought upon ourselves is welcome to do so.

Wanna talk about sex offences? I advise you start a thread called "Sex Offences".

Those breezy promises made by the leave campaign last year are starting to be tested by hard reality. One of those tests is how Hard Brexit is impacting on the level of midwifery in UK.

Our maternity services are drastically short staffed. Latest indications state that the NHS needs around 3'500 more midwives. So, let's consider how Brexit affects that.

In February (the last count) there were 1'385 midwives from other EU countries working in UK. If they were all to leave the shortfall would be close to 5'000. Services in some areas would be devastated.

The government has said that EU workers in the NHS make a "valuable contribution" and that "Securing their futures will be a priority" but it's not enough to just stamp the passports of those already here with a permit to remain and think that solves the problem because it doesn't.

The Royal College of Midwifery compared the numbers of those who come here to those who leave and found that in the year to September 2015, 250 midwives came in from EU states and 200 left. A net increase of 50. But if all we do is give the green light to stay to those who are already here that would not stop the overall numbers dwindling as some leave to go home.

This is not guesswork or speculation. It has already started. Between June and August last year (just after the referendum) only 102 midwives came here from EU countries. In March to May this year the number had slumped to 5. That is a drastic fall and amounts to less than one midwife arriving every fortnight.

This is the damage that Brexit is doing to our precious maternity services.

During the campaign, the Leave lobby told us that outside the EU, Britain would be free to pick and choose who we let into the country, and that we would select only the best. Unfortunately, it is those who have the skills who choose where they want to work, and UK is rapidly dropping down the list of places to come to. The "best" simply don't want to come here any more.

Midwifery in UK is an ageing profession. In the four years to September 2016 the number of midwives retiring increased by a quarter. They need to be replaced as we start cutting ourselves off from the inflow of midwives from the EU. There is a monumental crisis brewing.

Train more of our own, some say.... and we should... But from this Autumn the government intends to cancel the bursaries for student midwives, nurses and other healthcare students, replacing the bursaries with student loans. Add to this the fact that students will have to pay tuition fees, all that is happening is a deterrent to those who would otherwise wish to take this career path.

An extra £350 million a week would cover all the costs for sure, but we all know that that was a blatant lie by the Leave campaign that they repeated over and over and even plastered all over the side of their campaign bus. The simple fact is that the Leave campaign lied and enough suckers bought the lie to seal our doom. The £350 million a week won't be coming. It was never on the cards. Nobody can be in any doubt.

We are heading for a crisis in our medical services. Our politicians are telling us that they intend to pursue a Hard Brexit which will probably lead to no deal with the EU and leave us bereft of the skills we are increasingly in desperate need of - not just in midwifery but across the board.

I would love to see a second referendum, and with the whole Brexit process turning against UK at every turn who can say it won't happen..? But the bottom line is that those who work hard and make a contribution to our society should be allowed free movement, be they midwives or any other skilled professional.

Free movement has served us well and in my opinion it has to continue.

The Great Brexit Lie.

Of course this type of thing has something to do with Brexit and you know it. Many people who voted for Brexit had considerations other than purely economic ones. Some people disagree with mass child molestation and wanted something done about it. Some people are not blinded by their silly little utopian fantasy and they can see the link between Islam and child abuse in much the same way we can all see the link between Catholicism and child abuse, and they chose to do something about it. If you don't want something done about it that's ok, you can justify your position however you want, I do not care in the least. But at least try being a little bit honest.

But that said I have no interest in your thread and will happily leave you to your little fantasy. Ok?

Cheers, Bob.

Without making any reference whatsoever to child sexual abuse, Andrea Leadsom, the Leader of the House, chided Newsnight's Emily Maitlis for not being patriotic enough. She stopped short of adding "It's probably because you're not a mum like me".

No doubt Leadsom's decade in Barclays investment banking team was spent persuading clients to hand over even more cash to the HM Revenue and Customs to prop up the economy, and the tax she saved in 2005 when she signed shares in her husband's property company over to her children had almost certainly been spent in Union Flag bunting and photos of the Queen Mum.

Hugh Wittow, the Daily Express editor found himself embarrassed and having to sneakily remove a poll asking readers which way they would vote in a new referendum from his papers website after it began to show a clear majority for Remain.

By the time the article disappeared, "Remain" was winning by 54% to 46%, despite the gentle guidance in the copy accompanying the question which read: since Brexit Day the viciousness of the Remoaners campaign to try and overturn the democratic will of the British people has reached jaw-dropping levels...... the remain campaign claims Brexit voting Brits would change their mind if given a second chance to vote. We're not so sure so that's why we've set up our Brexit Referendum II poll.

Ooooooops,Hugh. Are you sure now..?

You would have thought the Express would shy away from this sort of thing, having been forced by the Press Regulatory Body Ipso to run a front-page correction in February over a front page splash headline that read: 98% say no to EU deal.

Ipso said that the headline and opening paragraphs of the article gave the impression that it was reporting the significant results of a representative poll carried out by an accredited third party for the paper in line with the usual practices of political polls, rather than the actual methodology used - a phone poll of Express subscribers in which those who would have voted would most likely be influenced by the paper's hard-line anti-EU stance.

All that remains now for Whittow's Wizard Wheeze is a 404 page reading "Page missing mystery" which would probably be a pretty rubbish attempt at making a 404 page exciting but far better than anything else you'll read on Express.co.UK.

David Davis is back in Euroland today, starting the second round of Brexit negotiations. Let's hope he has a little more luck than the savaging he received in the first round.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, with his political ideology stuck somewhere in the 1890's is somewhat of a throwback politician. Now he seems to have regressed back to childhood, saying that Brexit negotiations have been too soft.

"Too often it seems we want to roll over and have our tummies tickled. I'm very against tummy tickling in this context."

Quite what context he does approve of tummy tickling was a question not put to him by Andrew Neal. Thank you Andrew. The answer might constitute Too Much Information.
