Trump has decided to pull out from the Paris Deal, thanks to the urging of 22 Republican Senators, including Mitch McConnell, Ted Cruz, and Rand Paul, undoing Obama's efforts for America to play its part in curbing carbon emissions and efforts in slowing Earth's catastrophic trajectory to widespread global warming and rising sea levels.

In the 2016 election, Trump carried the majority vote among those 45 years and older. Clinton handily won among younger voters.

Those 45 and older, the Baby Boomers (yes, that generation that was originally anti-establishment and environmentally conscious), will not be around to suffer the consequences of global warming that the younger generation will.

Public sector business mindset.
Do what's best for now because the stockholders want to see their shares' value go up now.
Don't worry about how it will all go to hell in a hand-basket next year because you've got your golden parachute.

Comment: What do you want; a habitable planet or higher quarterly profits?

Don't worry about how it will all go to hell in a hand-basket next year because you've got your golden parachute.

Comment: Well yeah, that(if I understand correctly) is Capitalism.

Are you some kind of pinko commie tree hugging pig who wants to save the planet and give those who do the work the benefits of their labor? Huh?

Even if one does not want to believe in anthropomorphic global warming or climate change, isn't it good practice to not s*** in one's own bed? I have a new puppy, and even she's learned that by now.

True enough.

What are the solutions?

Indeed. Wouldn't one think it would be irresponsible parenting to pursue something that may pose a great risk to your kids because the science isn't clear to you on it? It would be like continuing to feed a kid something you know he may be allergic to because it's not 100% certain that his previous allergic reaction was specifically attributed to that particular food, even though initial signs pointed to that. Sure, further research may be warranted in your mind, but it would still be more responsible to abstain from that food until you are 100% certain of its cause.

I would think anyways.

What is it we should abstain from completely?

I think we should stick with a global agreement that reduces carbon emissions and prevents catastrophic consequences that would result otherwise.

Even if you don't necessarily believe in these consequences, why take the risk?

I agree with that, but what does that mean? What actions can be taken? That's what I'm asking.

I'm not setting a trap here, I'm genuinely asking.

Individually or as a state?

On the state level, sticking with a worldwide treaty consisting of an agreement to reduce carbon output by setting benchmarks in reduction for each state. These benchmarks would result in governments requiring domestic companies to comply with emissions standards, such as higher fuel efficiency standards for the auto industry.

On an individual level, there are many things we can do, from buying cars with higher fuel efficiencies, buying LED bulbs, adding more vegetarian meals to your menu, and so on.

Okay.

Thanks!

Do we know how much of a dent that will make in the problem? Are there any projected numbers on whether those measures (at the state level) will be of any significance in effect?

Again...I'm honestly asking because I actually haven't looked myself and don't know offhand.

We still have time. But it is short and the window is narrow. It we all comply with the Paris Accord, then there is still a good chance we can avoid the dreaded 2.0 degrees Celsius warming that would result in the dire consequences scientists are warning us about.

The US, the world's second highest carbon emitter, behind China (who is in the accord), dropping out would make it that much harder to avoid the above.

Short term - Natural Gas.
Power plants are converting from coal to natural gas.

Tax coal to subsidize more conversions.

Longer term -
Investment in R&D on alternative, clean energy - whatever that means, whatever that entails:
Money spent on potential dead ends.
Solutions that may be "too expensive" in a practical application ... today.
But again, everybody want ROI Today

I'm sure there is some of this happening already, but it is not a mission such as "Put a man on the moon by the end of the decade"

Retrain those in the coal industry as engineers and skilled construction workers so they can build the domes and floating cities we'll need should all this effort fail.

Hm. Sounds reasonable.

Is there a plan in place for third world countries who still rely heavily on coal and may not be able to afford conversion? I'd wager they are a huge factor in the production of carbon emissions.

What I'm asking is, will the regulation of those things you mentioned make a change big enough to matter or is it going to be a drop in the ocean?
