Aha! Another one! I know we are rare... but I didn't think there would be someone here besides me.

However since I don't do the internet/data thing, it's just limited to location - if it is turned on. Correct?

My old phone used to be a flip phone. I don't even have a cellphone currently.

Aww, isn't that cute!

The personal information of more than half a million people who bought internet-connected fluffy animals has been compromised.

I feel so bad for parents of young kids nowadays because you know that a toy like that would have many a child throwing a tantrum in a store if they didn't immediately have it.

Screw that. I'm getting my kids Lego, Hot Wheels, etc... oh, and vintage games. Probably on a computer or a modded unaltered console.

I use mine more as a mini computer than a phone. In the two months I've had the thing I've had two phone calls.

Yup. I pretty much switched to the phone as my main non-work computer, and abandoned my laptop.

I still like my laptop. The lack of an actual keyboard on the phone can be a pain. But yes when I'm not at home and don't have access to the laptop, or if I'm outside... it's the phone. It's an amazing little bit of technology.

https://www.cnn.com/2017/04/08/us/dallas-alarm-hack/index.html

Dallas residents were jolted out of bed late Friday evening after a hacker triggered all the city's emergency sirens, setting off a wave of panic and confusion.

All 156 emergency sirens were activated around 11:40 p.m. in what appeared to be a hacking incident that "woke up a lot of people,"

This happened a few years back to our local system a few times until they shut it down and had to spend big bucks for an upgrade and better security. During that down time there was a legitimate need for a weather warning and a lot of questions were raised as to why alarms didn't go off.

Maybe the hacker's one of those guys who hack into systems/programs/servers to show the owners that there's a hole in their security system and then offer to fix it for them or even work with them as security consultants, for a price of course. But in most cases if the owner refuses, the hacker immediately deletes all traces of themselves being in the system and all of the data they might've uncovered and the owner's system goes back to the way it was, although the owner now knows there's a way into his system now.

Reminds me of a recent article I read where someone tweeted a flashing gif or video to someone to purposely cause a seizure.

Found it:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/17/technology/social-media-attack-that-set-off-a-seizure-leads-to-an-arrest.html?_r=0

WASHINGTON — When the journalist Kurt Eichenwald opened an animated image sent to him on Twitter in December, the message “You deserve a seizure for your posts” appeared in capital letters along with a blinding strobe light. Mr. Eichenwald, who has epilepsy, immediately suffered a seizure.

.. but this time No - Not funny
