Spawned from another thread, but also an occasional though by me, thinking - Hmm... that could be dangerous...

This is real general, and off the top of my head - at least to start - but think about it:

1) There is some recent proposals to implement a system where all cars talk to each other about where they are, and signal warnings to the driver, or even apply brakes. ... or once hacked, track, stop, control a car....?

2) Recently there was a news spot about devices that will capture, record and reproduce the signals between a keyfob and a car, so a thief can brake into your car and possibly steal it. Stephen King wrote a story around that years back, and honestly, it had crossed my mind prior to that...

3) They've already shown how some of these "connected" vehicles can be hacked and controlled

That's just one aspect of your life that technology creep is happening.

I don't like all this technology. It is convenient, but I think we are paying for this convenience. On many levels.

What book is it?

Ever read Dune? The way We're going a "butlerian" jihad is inevitable.

But its all pretty neat though, if im honest. My brother predicts that by 2030 cars that you actually drive yourself will be obsolete.

What about flip phones? Yeah I have one. I don't even have internet on it. I could but I don't have it on my plan.

I have one too.
I think so - it's just a matter of tracking the unique id of the phone and how far away from 3 towers it is.

It's the metadata of the movement of cell phones that gives you the live traffic maps.

Aha! Another one! I know we are rare... but I didn't think there would be someone here besides me.

However since I don't do the internet/data thing, it's just limited to location - if it is turned on. Correct?

I don't think the info is public, like it could be for smartphones, but I would think law enforcement could get the info from your carrier if needed.

Yeah I think the only think on my cell phone is my call log, contacts and texts. I don't even have the voicemail set up. No apps, no coupons, no swipes or whatever.

Now the laptop... ha. Different story.

Just like a pack-rat's behavior is re-enforced when something stashed can be used, security notifications push Luddites further to the edge:

We are writing to inform you about a data security issue that may involve your Yahoo account information. We have taken steps to secure your account and are working closely with law enforcement.

What Happened?
Law enforcement provided Yahoo in November 2016 with data files that a third party claimed was Yahoo user data. We analyzed this data with the assistance of outside forensic experts and found that it appears to be Yahoo user data. Based on further analysis of this data by the forensic experts, we believe an unauthorized third party, in August 2013, stole data associated with a broader set of user accounts, including yours. We have not been able to identify the intrusion associated with this theft. We believe this incident is likely distinct from the incident we disclosed on September 22, 2016.

This is from my 'other' online presence.
I also use a different password for e-mail than for other accounts.
And "financial" accounts have different pw, and sometimes account names, from social/shopping accounts.

I even have one-off accounts for things I may just want to try

It is good to be paranoid.

Aww, isn't that cute!

The personal information of more than half a million people who bought internet-connected fluffy animals has been compromised.

So the other day, at home, I searched for a product and found what I was looking for on Amazon.

So yes, I understand I will now get targeted ads for those types of items for awhile (tables)

But then yesterday, At Work, I got a targeted ad for the exact same item!?? WTH?
I didn't search for it at work, I didn't go to Amazon at work (in fact, I let my wife order the table through her account)
The only common sites between home and work with my identity is Yahoo and TFS...
Not real sure where or how the "link" happened

Not that big of a deal, but just another example of how everything you do, no matter where you are is tracked/recorded.

It's like one of those dystopian horror movies - you can be reconstructed in cycberspace by gathering all of your bits and crumbs you leave behind on the net.

Re

And yesterday at work I searched for some flights and hotel rates for some possible travel plans.
- again, not using any kind of "identity" (that I know of)

And I get home and a pop-up add on a website is for that exact same location I was looking for at work!?!? Different machine, different network, I think even different browser!

This technology crap is disturbing.

I think, if you log into google on both machines, (or have at any one point, even if you log out) then it can track you that way. (and send directed ads.

I'm not certain if Yahoo works the same way.

There is also a communication through facebook. (If you even use that) If a page has a like button, facebook might know you are there, even if you don't click it.
HTTPS helps some, but not completely. I heard pronhub was switching to https, so basically, the info would reveal that you visited cornhub, but not that you were into "hard shucking" movies.

Basically anything you can do can be tracked, and now the lawmakers have made it so that info can be freely sold to get you even more ads.

It is really complicated to use the internet and not be tracked. It's possible, but inconvenient and many have given up the privacy for the convenience.
