If too sensitive to be exposed to any disturbing cases, nothing wrong. Don't choose that type of studies or profession - simple as that.

However, being tough doesn't mean judges, solicitors, doctors or even investigators don't get traumatised at times. It's not something natural to be prepared to hear, see or read extreme cases or any form of barbarism.

Sometimes, the society expect too much from normal human beings, as if these professionals are made of steel and don't feel pain at all. I know solicitors and investigators with many years of experience, who resigned after handling cases of extreme violence, which shocked the society.

I think, there should be a system of assessment prior to enrolling a student in specific courses. And, a systematic review of their state of mind. And for those already in these professions, including the juries, a counselling option to be able to at least express the feelings after such traumatic cases.

you have give the " law & order : special victim unit " - a lot of credit for how deal with this subject on tv. the show been on for 17 years.

i don't really heard that about how the public is respect for these violent crimes, that they handle. the show get more rewards from polices, the fbi, and the government.i think these young female lawyers should watch this show for the whys they need to be lawyers.

or watch any these " law & order " shows be inspire them. it is like these coming lawyers are afraid what they are read in the textbooks. is like they can't related to the cases. many ways, thank god for that. but, there is still a problem.

this article prove something is very wrong. how does the young lawyers deals with psychology effects of terrors that are feeling now, before they ever meet the first client.

OK - re-edit.

Maybe they could create a separate course on history of sexual violence and law. And for those that want to take it, it would be an extra note of a skillset on a resume....?

But it's still hard to see how it could be so traumatic to a majority of the students. Some, yeah, ok...

When I googled this looking for something more recent then the 2014 article I first came across , beings google there are like 44,oooooooooo hits well that's just me hitting random numbers and lots of zeros ,,,, But I have checked out several of the hits trying t find some thing that might explain or make sense or show its all just a BS prank . But nothing yet. It seems that we really are in 'danger' of being set back literally decades if not centuries in the 'rape law' part of the legal system , because the up and coming young lawyers are to traumatized to study it.

I said I was looking for something that made sense of this topic or proved it is just some BS prank .

Here is the one that makes sense of this topic. Here is the words of practicing lawyers in the real world court room .

Are Today's Law Students Tough Enough?

Quote:

After publishing an article on law students objecting to parts of the curriculum that might upset them or trigger memories of traumatic events, I heard from a lot of attorneys. A large majority felt that the difficult business of facing fraught subjects head on was a valuable part of law school and that aspiring lawyers need to toughen up. A smaller number of respondents argued that law schools should accommodate those who feel traumatized by certain subjects in the curriculum. What follows are excerpts of thoughtful reader emails from both perspectives.

But if any of them were traumatized (in the true sense of the word) by violence . one of two things would be evident , one, they would never have gotten into Harvard or Oxford to study law in the first place or two , they would be so hot to fight the fight that they wouldn't think to complain like they're doing.
I agree with your idea of a system of assessment prior to enrolling .

Or three, they only got there because the parents do not communicate enough with their children, to help make an informed choice of study and career. It's the fame and prestige behind that motivates both the parents and children to choose that path.

Those who got there with or without any support from parents and stand out, understand the nature of these studies and the future challenges. They may feel traumatised at at times but keep on reminding themselves the reasons and aim behind, to choose that field of study.

I think that's where self awareness developed at all stages while growing up as a child, comes to play. It also shapes the strength of character, emotional and mental state and helps in using the common sense.

Again, something to do with the upbringing of the parents and any form of education given by the parents. That's just my own findings and opinion - I stand corrected.

Apology partly accepted, but I will forgive you if you could cook me a three course meal, I don't like desserts, so find something savoury - thanks !

Many things leave people in a bad, sad, or traumatic state of mind. I can understand those who may have a legitimate reason for avoiding anything causing distress in their studies.

Then, best to avoid the subject completely. They can't expect others who are somehow prepared to face the reality and invest their time to understand it, to be penalised because of others legitimate reasons or lack of strength of character.

This is in part one of several emails from practicing lawyers giving their perspective on this

Quote:
I am a male public defender in a large American city. I am also a former victim of sexual assault. When I was 7 or 8, a young adult in his late teens who lived in the neighborhood forced me to perform oral sex on him on several occasions and also penetrated me anally with his fingers. My job is now to defend people who are accused of committing, and often did in fact commit, heinous crimes—including sexual assault and child molestation

I strongly believe that the work I do is important and that every defendant deserves a zealous and committed defense.

While in law school I may have had to talk and think about these issues, my career (and the ethical obligations that come with it) now require me to sit next to actual child molesters and call their victims liars on a fairly regular basis. I do not think I would have been well served by a law school experience that tried to protect me from stories about molestation and assault

I would hate for my childhood experience of sexual victimization to have precluded me from being a criminal defense attorney

A good example of strength of character and the importance to be exposed to such studies.

2 three course meal sounds good to me. Please note, I don't eat potatoes, chicken, frogs, sharks and snails.
I know that I'm going out of subject, but I have to say this.
Sometimes, I watch a TV documentary called ' Man vs Food'. It's an American TV program, and the food look really nice and tasty !
Nothing like the plain and blend food in the UK
