The members of the Muirfield Golf Club in Scotland have voted to maintain their policy of not allowing female golfers to become members of the club. Women may use the course as guests, but may not apply for membership.

Muirfield Vote

The vote has resulted in the Royal and Ancient, the body that administers Golf in the United Kingdom, removing Muirfield from the list of courses that can host the Open Championship and Ryder Cup when it is held in Britain.

The move has been widely condemned across the entire sporting canon in the UK. Prime Minister "Call Me Dave" Cameron and The leader of the Scottish Nationalist Party, Nicola Sturgeon has condemned the vote.

It makes me wonder how long the ban might hold up once the financial implications of the vote start to impact upon the club. For a start, they will lose millions of pounds from lost revenue for major championships and the sponsorship, television and attendance money that comes with them.

And then there is the National Lottery. Perhaps they haven't thought of that one yet.

In the mid 1990's, the Marylebone Cricket Club applied for a large Lottery grant (in the tens of millions of pounds. They needed a lot of money) which they desperately needed to make up shortfalls in their plans to upgrade Lords' cricket ground, and others, in time for the 1999 World Cup. The Chairperson of the Lottery Allocations Committee at that time was one Rachel Heyhoe-Flint, a former England woman cricketer and hockey player. She had been refused membership of the MCC despite having captained the England women's cricket team over many seasons.

She invoked a clause in the allocations rules that says organisations applying for lottery grants must be fully inclusive. The MCC had previously held a vote similar to the one carried out by Muirfield and that too found in favour of continuing the No Women ban.

The lottery grant was refused.

The MCC appealed and used its considerable influence within the British Establishment to overturn the ruling but the courts upheld the decision of the Lottery Allocations Committee.

Lords' really....... REALLY needed that money. The World Cup was approaching and Lords' looked like a Roman ruin.

An emergency meeting of the MCC Board overturned the vote and women were allowed to become members. The first application from a woman that they approved was that of Rachel Heyhoe-Flint. The day she walked into the Long Room as a member was a sweet victory for women indeed.

The redoubtable Ms Heyhoe-Flint is no longer on the Allocations Committee, but a precedent has been set and all businesses, clubs, organisations and charities applying for Lottery Grants are made well aware that gender inclusiveness is a prerequisite for the award of a grant.

There may come a day when Muirfield really..... REALLY need Lottery money. Let's see how their vote holds up then.

Right, either you believe in democracy or you don't, if you do you'll respect this vote, no matter who much you disagree with it.

Do you guys have the concept of "a private club"?

Here, if you're a private club, you can exclude anybody you like, with or without reason. Of course, you get no public funding, and you (nearly always) have to pay taxes, but you can straight out tell a woman that she's not welcome because she's a woman, or you can tell a man he's not welcome because he's a man. Or you can tell a woman she's not welcome because she's ugly, or she talks too much, or she isn't wearing the right little black dress.... A private club can literally exclude anyone they want with or without reason.

I'd assume that if this club has a no woman policy as members, that they're private, and they accept no public money... am I right?

What I meant was the club had a vote and excluded women so that is the end of that!
I've never f-ing heard of this club and there decision does not impact on anyone's life so what is the problem?
I wouldn't want to play golf there and even if I did I would be self-excluded as I can't afford the fee's. Wonder what Jen would have to say about that? It's my own fault? Or go play golf at a club I can afford.
So that is what makes men and women moaning about this ban farcical as all you are really saying is "it's terrible that woman who can afford to play at this golf club can't...women & men who can't afford can take a running jump"

Wait!

You don't have free golf courses? Or at least almost free golf courses where you put down a twenty and golf for the day and then have drinks with your buddies at the clubhouse?

If not, I'm sorry, but your country sucks.

We have but in the UK free = s***.

That is what makes the outrage against this ban so laughable. Like if you needed to be a millioniare to play golf at a club and they banned women, why should I, a regular joe care?

The ones around here aren't bad. You're never going to see Tiger Woods or Michelle Wie playing at one, and you won't get 30 year old single malt scotch at the bar, but the courses are decent and you can have fun playing. In fact the free stuff in my town is excellent. We've got places to play baseball, football, American football, golf and even cricket and archery, and it's all free if you live here.. It's pretty awesome.

Just checked, it costs £220 for one round of golf, but if you play 2 in one day it's only £290.
I'm pretty sure that's 95% of the women in the UK priced out of that club.

in the united states, we have " the private clubs " goes back into the turn of the century.

many of the clubs are like institution into institution. like old school boys that only the select people are allow to join.

these so-called private clubs are very rich in the usa, men only. white men only.

these clubs will not allow blacks or jews join. very prejudice!!

have this particular so-called club not allowing women join, not as bad the clubs , we have in america.

this club need to get out the dark ages.

I'm guessing Muirfield's vote transpired in a similar fashion.

I have 10 free golf courses within 10 miles of my house, and another 15 that are either semi-private or private.

We have a heap of women only gyms in Australia (no men only gyms that i know of), there are women only private clubs and just yesterday a new 'cab' service was announced that will only pick up women and children and will only employ female drivers. Haven't heard a peep from anyone about that one, though if the roles were reversed it would be a very different story.

We have also had situations where feminists have successfully campaigned for a PRIVATE male only swimming club to admit women whilst at the same time successfully campaigning for PUBLIC pools to have up to two days a week where men are excluded!

Personally i don't see the big deal if a private club wishes to have set criteria which determines who can join. If however the club/facility is funded by public money then that's another matter.

I don't really understand why anyone would want to be part of a private club that didn't want them.

I have visions of a black person trying to joint the KKK...

Anyway, why would any woman want to hang out with a bunch of misogynistic old men?

....of course they might not be misogynistic....they might just want their own special man cave...
