https://www.yahoo.com/news/black-north-carolina-student-passes-150300237.html Jakayla's case shows that, even when a black girl does nothing wrong, punishment can still put her at risk for being pushed out of the school system. While Johnson was sitting in Chinese class, school officers entered the classroom, alleging they smelled weed from the hallway. They singled out Johnson and smelled her fingers, which, according to a school document obtained by local CBS affiliate, smelled "pungently" of weed.
"I was feeling embarrassed because they called me out of everybody," Jakayla Johnson said to CBS North Carolina. According to Jakayla's mother, Tameka Johnson, officials said they checked "possession" on the document because they had no other box to check for just smelling like weed. WTF???

I wonder what other things we can be arrested for because we smell like them.

Is there a law against smelling like something?

Was she sniffed by a certified sniffer?

How will they prove what she smelled like.

Cellmate: what are you in for
Johnson: I smelled like weed.
Cellmate: No, really what are you in for?

You are assuming that was singled out because she was black. Maybe she was wearing patchouli. Also, the officers may have taken a person of another race if they had noticed another student had that odor. Not good to assume.

even if she smoke or not smoke the weed. her clothes would the smell of the joint on her.

with statistics on the article, that general, it might be true.

if a school that has 40% students are blacks and 60% are whites.

or

if a school that has 80% students are blacks and 20% students are whites.

it is no brainer!

this is more a fact than anything.

these schools are judge with " old boys standards " like blacks lives in poor areas or somewhat middle class areas.

whites in lives in middle class areas or rich areas.

naturally, these schools will said if backs are innocent, they are still guilty. because blacks are white students.

that's so bad. i wish i was wrong. obviously, by this article. i am not wrong!

I also wonder if there is any "history" to the situation.

Mom saying "Not my child" and showing up with drug test results (how long after?) have no bearing.

Though now there will be a protocol in place such that the officers have to sniff the fingers of every person in class!

So...the "facts are"...

The school resource officer stepped into the class, claimed they’d smelled marijuana from the hallway. The investigator picked out Johnson after five minutes of searching the classroom.

> School official smells marijuana in hallway. (It is a fairly distinctive smell.)
> School official searches classroom for 5 minutes.
> School official decides to smell Ms. Jakayla's hands. (I'm wondering if anyone else's hands were smelled and/or if Ms Jakayla seemed to have the aroma of marijuana around her...in which case she could be anyone of 30 or 40 of my friends back in the day...both tokers and non-tokers who hung out with the tokers.)
> School suspends Ms. Jakayla.

I find this entire story more than just a bit odd....

Of all of their students, why would the school target Ms. Jakayla? Because she is "black"? Really? No, sorry, being "black" just isn't good enough in this situation. That school has plenty of black students. They have roughly 432 black students. It is a Magnet school, as it isn't easy to get accepted in the 1st place. Yet the one student that they target is an innocent black girl sitting in class minding her own business.

We're to believe that the school officials just randomly decided to target some black girl in her foreign language class? There was no smell of marijuana in the hallway? They just picked her out because she is a female black person?

What has she done that makes her such a threat to the school that she is just randomly targeted?

I am actually not sure what we are supposed to believe about this story.

I don't necessarily believe the child. I have children…they are sometimes honest and sometimes they are little liars.

I don't necessarily believe the mother. Many, if not most, parents just can't fathom that their child can do anything wrong...which is BS.

I also don't necessarily believe the school officials. Bureaucrats are typically nitwits. But, schools systems don't like to open themselves up to law suites either.

This entire news story is missing too many pieces.

My fingers smell like Parmesan and pesto right now as I was in the kitchen getting dinner ready.

I wonder if some Italian mobsters are going to show up at my house and pull me out and give me a thorough talking to. Something about making sure the pasta comes out Al Dente.

Since the smell was so strong out in the hall , I'm betting that the school officials had just missed one or more tokers walking in the hall while smoking a dooby. Because if the smell was coming from behind a closed classroom door then there would have to be smoke in the air in the classroom. Now, I have no personal experience .You see I know this because I watched ' Up in Smoke ' three times one time .
