That's cool. But put it another way....if you see what your children do as crime, then does that not make them criminals in your eyes..?

How do you think they would feel about that..?

I know I'm pushing the envelope on this one now, but I'm doing it for the purpose of exploring the argument of excessive / inappropriate response.

No i just see it as an analogy, plain and simple.
I don't see kids as criminals just because the analogy is used.
It is what it is, a simple saying.
It is not intended literally.
I believe to much emphasis is paid on the meaning of words/sayings we use now-a-days. To the point were people are afraid to speak incase it upsets someone. Leaving us lacking in communication. Everything is about being P.C now and i believe it's gone to far.

You've been here for 5 years. Don't you think that's punishment enough for the rest of us?

Thanks for the links.
They don't give very much more details then what we already have .
I still don't get the child neglect charge.
This story is starting to resemble stories that in recent years have cops and CPS stepping in, removing children , arresting parents , bringing charges all based solely on whether or not they agree with a parents choices on child rearing. Seldom if ever on the safety or well being of the child.

Maryland parents investigated by the police for letting their kids walk home alone.

The report says because it was cold and traffic was starting to pick up.

As for the cold part I checked the weather for March 1st low was 36 the high was 63 that day in Jasper Tenn . Now that may be cold in Tenn. But in the snow belt of Ohio 36 in March means the kids are outside playing with just a sweatshirt on. Very subjective on the part of the officer. The police also said traffic was starting to pickup for rush hour again subjective view. Third was of the adults claims they have run into this officer before and had trouble. In my neck of the woods everybody knows everybody business so this could be true if this is as rural as the one picture I saw of the road.

As far as the road its self when the road where my farm is, was gravel. The speed limit was 55 mph. All unincorporated roads in Ohio are that way. There is no sidewalk just a drainage ditch. Tenn. speed limit may be the same way.

This might be considered splitting hairs but , I could understand a child endangerment charge, if the weather and traffic conditions were as the cops say, child neglect is a totally different thing .
There are one or two things that seem out of whack about the cops story, like 'the traffic was starting to pick up with people going to work'. Now I don't know what time the school day starts there, but if it's similar to here most everyone would already be at work by the time two kids could walk a mile and a half, after the bus had run.

Some interesting points and I take them on board entirely. It just goes to show how two people can read and interpret something quite differently.

As the parent of a small child - albeit not yet of school age - I can see your points about wanting to instil good habits by example. And yes, rolling the eyes is a girl thing. I used to do it all the time to my mother <laughing>.

My little girl is a little too young to have perfected the art of eye rolling, but I'm sure she'll get there in the fullness of time. I don't mind. If that's the worst thing she ever does to me as a parent, I'll figure I've got off pretty lightly.

But getting back to the issue at hand, a three mile walk may not be a big deal to a healthy, fully grown adult but to a small child it is significantly more difficult and it's quite possible that the child could become physically distressed. Once again, it's about proportion. As the saying goes: Walk a mile in the other person's shoes....

When I see articles such as this, I ask myself, would I do this to my own little girl..? Would my parents have done this to me..? The answer is no on both counts. And yet, I have no difficulty keeping good time.

I appreciate you have your way of doing things and I have mine. It's good that we can relate our differences. But when you say "The punishment fits the crime", I think that calling it a crime at all is somewhat excessive. I read it as a simple case of childish negligence, or forgetfulness or perhaps even naughtiness. But crime..? Isn't that a bit strong..? I think that attaching an excessive interpretation to an event leads to making an inappropriate response.

I also take your final point too, about "how many times does it take... etc". Well, I don't think it will get that far with my daughter. She can be a little madam at times for sure. But she is smart and learns quickly. She's realised that good behaviour and doing things when she's told to do them gains approval.... smiles from mummy.... and occasionally, reward. Bad behaviour is not approved of.

Example: When she painted on the lounge wall once, I made it pretty clear that she'd been naughty. Then I told her that she wouldn't be going to the swimming pool that day (she loves the swimming pool.... she's a real water baby..!!) because I now had to spend the time when we should have been going out, cleaning the paint off the lounge wall.

I left her to mull on that while I cleaned the wall (actually, it didn't take long) but after that, we sat down and painted together on paper. She'd been upset by not going to the pool... so the message had sunk in...... but a punishment can only go on for so long. Once it has had its desired effect it should be over. Not needlessly prolonged

She painted a picture for me. I told her how clever she was, and that I loved it. I gave her a big hug then I put it on the fridge door (every mothers' art gallery is her fridge door, right..?). We went to the swimming pool the next day. She hasn't painted on the lounge wall since, but now you can't see the fridge door for "Megan Pollocks" as my wife calls them.

Do you think I was soft on her..? I don't think so. She was made to know that she'd been naughty and that naughtiness carries a penalty. But even when she is being punished, she is still loved and that mummy will teach her how to do things the right way with fun.... and that doing things the right way gains approval instead of punishment. I think what I did was appropriate and that it had the desired effect in that it has (so far, lol) corrected the improper behaviour.

Kids.... who'd have 'em, eh..? <laughing>

No I don't think that kids missing the school bus is criminal or a crime, but, you can't quote something if you are gong to change it .
We don't know the age of either of the girls , I did mention in my OP something about if they were young very children then I don't agree with making them walk 3 miles, but if they are 8 or 9 or older then I have no problem. When my youngest ,my daughter, was in first grade we walked 2 miles out to catch the bus and the same back home after school, even after the 2 miles first thing in the morning and all day at school my kids would take that 2 miles home like a walk in the park . their ages were 6,8 and 9 , they all ate like they had a bottomless pit attached to two hollow logs and made me often wish that I had their energy and they had mine , but there were no negative affects from the walking .
It's strange that when I see other peoples daughters giving them that look that says ' how did I get stuck with these parents 'accompanied with that eye roll, I find it amusing but, when it was directed at me from my daughter, I wanted to thump her , I guess she knew this ,because she always waited till she was out of reach to roll those eyes.

When kids are young and their world is made up of four walls << their home << and their parents, it's never 'to soft' to take away something they enjoy when they have done something like tagging a wall . Getting them to understand that 'it' is unacceptable and then showing them how to do 'it' the right way , walls - unacceptable ,paper - the right way .
It's when a parent is wishy washy with their lessons that a kid will become confused and then the 'fun' <<pun<< rally get started , by wishy washy I mean like if last week she tagged the walls and you dealt with like you did , but next week she does the same thing and you just laugh it off like it's acceptable . If she does the wall painting again at an older age, then yes ,you cleaning it up and sitting with her and some paper, would be IMO 'to soft'.
I realize you are a first time mommy and she is still about as sweet as honey . I'm not trying to jinx you ,I'm just stating facts . but there will come a time when she has figured out just where you draw the lines about what's acceptable and what isn't and she will push the envelope ,sometimes just because she can and others times just because she wants to ,,,, .
If you do nothing else , be sure that your kid never doubt's you love her , it is the one most important thing a parent has to do. just saying.

Read an article yesterday that said the girls were under 10. I my world that's old enough to walk to school. My kids ran around all day when not in school. If they can do that then a 3 mile walk is nothing.

I agree, there were times during summer break that we were up at the butt crack of dawn and in the corrals . sorting , branding etc.... by 7:30 am. We would work till time to do the evening chores. My azz would be dragging by then , but those 3 kids of mine, who had been right there in the corrals running gates , running the irons, chasing the babies, all day long , would be as full of energy as if they had been laying in the shade all day.
I use to tell them I'd trade them title for title for energy, they could have mine and Id take theirs .

Sounds like a great trade to me. Especially now. I get totally exhausted just watching the grandkids now!

somehow my kids figured out that they would be getting the short end of the deal and wouldn't ever agree to the trade.

but, now I get to watch them try to keep up with their kids going from 0 to 90 in 3.2 ,,,,
so it's evened out a bit ,,,

I caught my oldest son stealing some bubble gum from the grocery store when he was about 5 or 6 years old , Just so happened that at the time the judge owned the store. I sent my kid back into the store and made him fess up and hand the judge the gum . By the time that judge got though giving that kid an age appropriate lecture about what he could expect from a life of crime , I was holding my sides and biting my tongue trying not to [smile]https://i.tfster.com/tx/600x2500/i38/2/6/4/tfswhiteswan_6efb67d1b2f3737d54804764ee086c74.gif"> at the scared s***less look on my kids face. I don't believe you could have paid that kid to steal something after that .
I thanked the judge and said I thought that the 'punishment fit the crime ' he told " your very welcome" and that he hadn't had the chance to give that lecture in quite a while , thanked me for making the kid bring back the gum.

Then the next we were in there shopping , damned if that judge didn't give all 3 of my kids some gum on the house.
I never have treated y kids as criminals , except for the few times like the bubble gum deal when hat they had done was more then' kids will be kids' type mis behaving . Yes it was just a three cent piece of gum and it would never been missed if I hadn't made him return it to the owner.

I thank the powers that be that it was at 6 yeas of age , a 3 cent piece of gum and a lecture that taught him the lesson instead of , at 16 , a car and jail time . An added bonus was the judge handled it with just the right tone and attitude so my kid learned that stealing wasn't acceptable behavior and that the judge was okay and deserved his respect .

According to Tenn laws on school transportation. The school district only has to bus those who live more than a 1.5 miles from the school. That is all ages.

"Boards of education may provide school transportation facilities for children who live more than one and one half (1 1/2) miles by the nearest accessible route from the school to which they are assigned by the board of education and in which they are enrolled."

I guess the law enforcement officers should be charging school board members with child endangerment.

Didn't you post that you had used map google to find the road this took place on ?
The reason I ask is that one article says the girls had walked about mile and two more to go , while another said they had walked 1 /2 miles but didn't give info on the remaining distance .
A pet peeve for me is when 2 or 3 different newspapers take a story from the same place and report that story so differently it almost sounds like 3 or 4 different stories , if not for the location , names and headline . next to impossible sometimes .
