I don't get the 'child neglect' charges .
Mom was in her car driving slowly in front of her daughters . The girls had missed the bus and were walking to school as punishment . The article doesn't give their ages , but if they are 5 th grade or higher .IMO the' punishment fits the crime' so to speak . especially if missing the bus is a habit or becoming one .
Mom is facing 'child neglect' charges and driving without a license.
The article is real short and doesn't give much info .
The way the media spins things these days , if the girls are very young , like under 7 years of age and if the was mom driving on a revoked license , mom would probably have been arrested and put in jail , then the article would be plumb full of all sorts of details about the horrible mom and her poor children .
So, back to the 'child neglect' charges , where's the neglect ? Mom was about 50 yards in front of the girls . That doesn't sound much like a neglectful mom to me , it sounds like a mom who was teaching her kids that catching the bus was preferable to walking 3 miles to school , a lesson that would have stuck with the kids and motivated them to get around and get to the bus stop on time ,if the cops hadn't of butted in where they had no business to be . She wasn't beating the kids , the kids weren't out there all alone with out adult supervision etc...
Now driving without a license is on mom and she should be having to face a judge and explain what's up with that .
Anyways, IMO the cops over stepped their authority on charges of neglect .

The cops are over-stepping the bounds here. Parents have the right to discipline their own children. No problem--as far as I can tell--with a mom making her child walk.

Andrew Jackson is still on the US 20-dollar bill after all!!

There has to be more to the story than that. [crusty old man voice] Back in my day we all walked or rode a bike to school from day 1 for the most part. I had to wade through crocodile infested swamps and miles of paddocks full of thistles and prickles with no shoes on to get to school... kids these days are too soft.[/crusty old man voice]

the article explain why abe lincoln had walked school, when he was a kid. he keep missing the horse and buggy bus to school. his mother punished him forced to walked school.

his mother has horse and buggy to take to work at the factory. illnois has one of the best factory of baby buggy bummers in the usa. abe's father work that make wooden dentures, their were popular since george was president.

last thing, the parents use let farm animals come to school with kids. that did when the teachers complain that little girl named mary brought her lamb, leory to school.

actually, the parents and teachers complaining about leory. not because leory eat everything that wasn't strap not to the desk. the kids complained to their parents, and the parents and the teachers agreed that would not any farm animals allow in schools through usa.

because leory not only was the smartest person, as well as, the smartest animal in the school. he was a show off too, that gave a lot of students complex problems as well.

Maybe it was the "leash" tied to the bumper of the car?

It was sorta dumb thing to do, but i don't think it warrants child abuse per se. I'm a bit more concerned about potential traffic issues she may or may not have caused, driving slowing on a road can in some cases be just as deadly as driving too fast.

Where were her in relation to the road, in the road, on the sidewalk, how old, etc etc.

There are other factors to be looked at.

i have to admit it can kind of strange.

if the mother wasn't there, and the kids go back home. i decide to walk the school, that not the mother's fault.

it the police got involved more after she doesn't have driver's license.

that fact, if the mother had a driver's license. she was 50 yards from the kids. the kids somewhat not endanger. i am not sure, this is what you called " child abuse.

but the mother teach her kids a good lesson of responsibility.

i agreed that have more to this article that it is saying. something between lines, does seem odds about it. even to put in the news.

I find the references to Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln somewhat odd in relation to this case. To the best of my knowledge and belief, when they went to school the motor car had not yet been invented so what their parents may or may not have done in the same circumstances is irrelevant.

Be that as it may......

I wouldn't make my daughter walk three miles to school simply because she missed the bus. Behaving in that way is inappropriate and excessive to the point of draconian in my opinion.

No, I'm not suggesting the mother "tortured" her child in any way (an exaggeration I can see being thrown at me from a mile off), rather, she responded to a simple instance of child forgetfulness in an inappropriate way and administered an excessive punishment.

I can't say how the child will respond to this punishment. She may indeed realise that it's a long way to school on foot and be more mindful in the future. Alternatively, she might become resentful and angry about it and not learn any sort of lesson at all except that her mother hurt her and made her a figure of fun at school. Other kids will be sure to have found out about it and might very well make the girl a target for taunts and name-calling.

The police have also over-reacted. Notwithstanding the unlawful driving charge, there was no need to arrest her for disciplining her daughter.... albeit inappropriately....

What's needed in these instances is some common sense. The child missed the bus. Oh dear, how sad, never mind.

Message to Mum: In future, call the school, tell them she'll be late for her first class and then take her in on a later bus. On the way, tell her how she's inconvenienced everybody with her forgetfulness and how she's going to be late now and that's not a good thing. Then tell her she's done a silly thing, but she's not a bad girl. Give her a hug and get her to promise to be ready for school on time in future.

That's how I'll do it if it happens with mine in the future.

No cops. No newspaper articles. No tears.

Simple.

I find it amazing when parents are afraid to have their kid/kids mad at them , a kid is nothing more then a short human being and anger is one of the emotions that human beings experience. Healthy ,well cared for and loved kids do not become resentful and angry . Yes they do at times get angry at mom/dad for real or imagined slights , but they do not stay angry, if the lines of communication is open between kids and parents . If the slight is real and an apology is called for and it comes from the heart the issue becomes a bonding , trust building experience. Now a kid that has no set boundaries and has been spoiled rotten can and will be resentful of the parents because at some point ' all of everything ' will never be enough . An abused neglected kid will become a mirror image of the parents .

Did you find a site about this story with more info about this ? If so would you link to it ?
I ask because the article I linked to gave no info on the age of the girls , did state that there were 2 daughters and only said that the mom will face the charges when she goes t court , nothing was said about her being arrested.
In my OP I mentioned that lack of details/info in the article and suggested that if the mom had been arrested the media would spin the story in an ugly light , reporting on the horrible mom and her poor daughters etc.....

You say that you would handle the missed bus with an "Oh dear, how sad, never mind. " attitude and went on to add " In future, " statement . If a kid is missing the school bus because she hasn't developed any time management skills , your handling of the situation will just reinforce what will quickly become a habit , a bad habit . The kid learns that mom will take up her slack and totally adopt the attitude of Oh dear, how sad, oh well, never mind not my problem ,,,mom will deal with the effects of my ripples .
No set boundaries or discipline makes for a very unhappy kid .

You were lucky. When we were kids we used to get up half an hour before we went to sleep and put in an 12 hr shift at the local factory before walking 50 clicks over broken glass in our bare feet just to get to school. We then routinely received 100 whacks with a metal studded leather belt for leaving bloody foot prints on the school grounds. But we never complained!

Luxury.

When we were young there were thirty four of us living in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o'clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down the mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

We used to dream of living in a septic tank. It would have been a palace to us. 57 of us used to live in an old sock in a stagnant puddle of water. We used to get up half an hour before we went to bed, eat a handful of hot gravel for breakfast before licking the road clean with our tongues. We would then work 23 hr days, week-in week-out in mill and pay the mill owner for the privilege of working there. And then when we got home our Dad would slice us up into a 1000 pieces and dance over our graves singing "happy times are here again".
