I kind of see this as "You see what you want to see" - It was apparently a source of pride pride or honor for many, then some people or groups appropriated it to represent a type of hate.

I never saw it that way when displayed on the top of the General Lee

Well it was a war flag...a battle flag...i.e. a flag of defiance against the USA.

If anyone in the "south" wants remember the Confederacy they should use the Confederate States of America.

The Unites States as a whole bears the responsibility for adopting the Slave trade.

If you would like to ban a flag, it must be the American Flag.

The United States as a whole bears the accolade for stopping the Slave Trade.

Banning the American Flag is idiotic.

The US stopped the slave trade after they profited from it---all under a version of the stars and bars American Flag. There simply isn't enough political support to make that American Flag ban happen. Yet.

Banning flags along with banning the sale of toys on ebay/amazon which bear the image of those flags is also idiotic. It accomplishes nothing.

The Confederate Battle Flag is not a symbol of racism and it should not be retired from government buildings.

But your confederate battle flag represents never even trying to stop the slave trade... in fact it represents failure.

Well, there are other places to live that don't fly the American flag.

If it helps sales and customer loyalty, then it accomplishes a lot.

Who was talking about "Banning Flags"?

The OP said "Retire", NC is considering removing it from a memorial, the only "ban" that I saw was from the big Corps jumping on a bandwagon of free advertising. Do you really think a few stinkin' flags matter to Walmart or Amazon? They just want to look "noble" ... before social-media seizes on them.

Uh..... history begs to differ. To wit:
April 26, 1852
"Confederate States of America - Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union

The people of the State of South Carolina, in Convention assembled, on the 26th day of April, A.D., 1852, declared that the frequent violations of the Constitution of the United States, by the Federal Government, and its encroachments upon the reserved rights of the States, fully justified this State in then withdrawing from the Federal Union; but in deference to the opinions and wishes of the other slaveholding States , she forbore at that time to exercise this right. Since that time, these encroachments have continued to increase, and further forbearance ceases to be a virtue."

That's just the first paragraph. In all the declaration mentions slavery 18 times.

And Mississippi- to wit:

"A Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce and Justify the Secession of the State of Mississippi from the Federal Union.

In the momentous step which our State has taken of dissolving its connection with the government of which we so long formed a part, it is but just that we should declare the prominent reasons which have induced our course.

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin. "

Where slavery is mentioned a mere 7 times.

Ohh... this could get sticky, while sliding a bit off topic but ....
Is slavery necessarily equivalent to racism?

When it's about one race enslaving another- I'd say yes.
