Ireland Gay Marriage Referendum - BBC

What a wonderful day for the people of the Irish Republic. An overwhelming majority - almost a two thirds in favour - has delivered a blow for gay equality in a country where only twenty years ago being homosexual was a crime that resulted in a prison sentence.

Ireland is the first country in the world to accept same gender marriage as a result of a popular vote. It just goes to show that when this subject is put to the people, the religious objectors are in a minority. If this can happen in a staunchly Catholic country like Ireland, it can happen anywhere.

The vote is only valid in the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland is still exempt from United Kingdom same gender marriage law, but this vote is expected to put pressure on Stormont to review their policy. That will be a very, very uphill battle though

For now though, it's congratulations to the Republic of Ireland. It's a great day to be Irish.

The religious objectors just shout loudly to make it appear there are more of them than there really are. I do hate people making the assumption that because I am religious that I am automatically some form of homophobe based on these morons telling everybody that we are all alike. Nope, no thank you! Such a massive day for Ireland

It's not official unless and until Jenny posts about it. We had the same issue with the Olympics when they were in London a few years ago.

Yes I remember, it was good for the average Londoner, even though it wasn't.

Jenny said it was, so it must be true.

I remember the debate over scoring, and Jenny basically shouting "If everyone had just listened to ME, we wouldn't be having this conversation".

Of course, that was before I knew that she was the only person capable of telling everyone else what was correct in every instance. I really should have known, after all, her daddy was rich and spared no expense on her upbringing.

And now, I've probably used too many commas.

I just love how she tells you what you already know, but she explains it to you as if, you are 5 years old and it means nothing without her seal of approval.
Goodness! As she would say, it just goes to show, what a wonderful day...etc.

She has to do that for us, because compared to her, we're all idiots. If she actually tried to speak to us like we were adults, we would be completely befuddled and have no idea what she was saying.

That's also why she needs to use five times as many words as you and I. She doesn't do it in an thinly veiled attempt to seem superior to the rest of us as you might think, but instead she uses all those extra words so we have a chance to learn new things, and possibly advance from "chimp-like" to more human.

She's really trying to help us all, but we're simply too stupid and naive to realize it.

I can just imagine her explaining to her "wife" that she is going to fill the car up with petrol, which is food for Mr Cars tummy. She will pay with money, which is paper and coins...

I'm certain that her daddy taught her well enough to make sure that her partner is the same social class, so they probably just sit around in the solarium and say "fa fa, fa fafa, fa, fa fa" to each other.

I get that all the time too.

I support gay marriage, I support euthanasia for people suffering if that is their choice and they're f sound mine and I believe a woman can do what she wants with her body and the fetus in it. It shocks, truly shocks people.

It can be quite infuriating. Not being that way inclined, I am not going to marry another woman so why would I possibly say its wrong for two other ladies/gents to marry just because its not my inclination. To me, it is not a choice- I never woke up one day and decided I was going to fancy men, it happened naturally because I was born that way.

My religion is very important to me, it is not something that I like to discuss, it is very personal to me and prefer to keep it private but I would never use it as an excuse to tell other people how to live their lives. Sometimes I have encountered being looked on less favourably by a small minority of the gay community because of my religion as they have had poor treatment before. Not tarring everyone with the same brush would be good- not all religious people are extremists and against what they dont experience themselves. Having said that, I do know some friends who can happily combine being gay with religious belief

People are always shocked that I fully support euthanasia- as you say when they are of sound mind and not when families get bored of relatives so bump them off. I think they are more surprised when they hear that I am not in favour of abortion as these two typically go hand in hand

Always interesting to see the reaction of people when I say I am all in favour of euthanasia and feel that the laws need to be changed to allow people to carry out their last wishes and their families can support that without fear of reprisals
