I agree.

Let's hope no more irresponsible radio jocks think it's hilariously funny to make a nationwide laughing stock of somebody who is only trying to do their job as best they can.

Lessons learned all round, I hope.

You think the royals have learnt lessons here too? Or would they still vent their displeasure at what happened towards the nurse? She didn't take her life because of the prank, lets be clear about that, it was the pressure the royals put her under after it happened. Can anyone remember what the Duchess of Kent said about the death of this nurse, or what any of the royals said? Nope, neither can I.

We call it "Heir and a spare."

I'm glad too that not so much fuss is being made this time. Let Kate have her baby in as much peace as possible. Buck House will ensure that there are appropriate photo opportunities and I'm sure we'll all be happy with those.

As regards the lineage, Dorks, the constitutional adjustment now is that if a girl is born first, she would be first in line for the throne. In previous times, if a firstborn was female and a subsequent child a male, the male would have taken precedence. Example: Henry VIII's first child was Mary, birthed by Katherine of Aragon. His second child, Elizabeth was birthed by Anne Boleyn. His third child, Edward was birthed by Jane Seymour. On Henry's death, it was Edward who came to the throne first, then Mary and finally, Elizabeth.

If this new ruling had been in place at that time, Mary, then Elizabeth, then Edward would have been the line of ascendancy.

I hope this helps.

Yes, that's what we call it here too, heir and a spare. I was trying to think of the proper term. Lol
It's truly wonderful that now in 2015, Royal girls are equal to Royal boys.

I was acutely quite upset at the backlash when she left the hospital. She wore that blue dress and you could see she still had a belly. Over here the media really went to town on that. I applaud her bravery for it and was so upset people made fun of her for that after belly.

I've never had a child but the pressure on women who have to go back to a size 4 is madness.

Size 4...!!! Woooooooowww...!! Over here that would be, like, tiny. You must have a different size system to us. <laughing>.

I had a belly too when I came out of hospital. Over here they like you to get home and into a routine as quickly as possible so long stays are a thing of the past. I was quite happy with my tum. It's a perfectly natural thing to have. why the media should have made a fuss over it seems odd to me. Has nobody seen a baby belly before..??

So, you've not had any children. Do we append a 'yet' to that or do you not ever intend to..?

I too am glad at the constitutional changes. It shows the monarchy is modernising and keeping abreast of social changes. It has to. It cannot survive otherwise.

When you think about it, three of Britain's greatest.... and longest living.... monarchs have been women: Elizabeth I, Victoria, and Elizabeth II. Having said that, Jane Gray didn't last too long.... her 'reign' (if you can call it that) was the origin of the phrase "9 Day Wonder".

Just to ask a question, Dorky... would you describe yourself as pro-monarchy, or are you simply curious about what some would call an anachronism in the modern age..?

I know there is a size difference regarding clothing with Canada and UK but I forget exactly how much. There is much pressure here for women to be tiny so to lose the baby weight right after you have a baby is sort of expected. In the sense that if one has any public nority, the media will have a field day if one is not bs k to probably weight quickly.

I have not seen many bellies after pregnancy but it should be common sense that it would have stretch marks and be saggy so why that shocked the media to see Kate that way, it was beyond me. Perhaps it was they knew but it's something women are suppose to hide which to me makes it worse then ignorance.

I just get frustrated at times all this pressure on women.

I do not know the word anachronism....I myself adore the monarchy, though I pass on liking Charles and Camilla. I like the pagendry of it, the fuss of it, the grandness of it. I am enjoying the newer generation more like Willian, Harry, Kate because I see them not so much as these Royal figures one does not touch but the pagendry of it combined with charity, giving back to the people, empathy, compassion snd looking to fix issues and problems in common wealth countries.

Thanks for responding. I think you've got it spot-on. Yes, the pageantry is quite special and during the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002, when I was still living in London, I went with a bunch of friends up to London for the day. I do recall us all standing in the Mall next to a couple waving Maple Leaf flags and saying how they'd diverted from their holiday visiting relatives in Scotland to come down to London for the Jubilee.

The Queen has been responsible for the successful transition from Empire to Commonwealth but as I've posted on another thread recently (Uneasy Lies The Head That Wears a Crown), there could be problems when Charles comes to the Throne. He is far too political for everybody's liking and he could really damage the Commonwealth. . It's not his job to meddle in politics but he can't help himself and seems to ignore all advice to back off.

Many would love to see Charles bypassed and William ascend to the Throne when Elizabeth dies, but that's not going to happen. It's constitutionally impossible.

Kate is lovely, isn't she..? She has none of Diana's vanity and obsession with self promotion but is able to charm people and she just.... fits... alongside Wills.

I agree with you that women have pressure heaped on us to conform to an ideal of appearance that isn't realistic. Thankfully I'm not affected by male expectation but some of the other mum's at the toddler's playgroup I take Megan to get annoyed by it. As for <ahem> the 'after effects' of pregnancy, just two words: Cocoa Butter. You know what I'm talking about. It's not a cure all but it's done me the world of good in that department.

I think, looking back at everything, Diana had some untreated mental health issues like depression and maybe even Borderline Personality Disorder. I do think she loved Charles, but he never loved her, she realized it and it made her issues worse. He created and she only wanted to be loved, so she cheated. I think she realized it was a pretty much forced marriage for Charles. Her being mentally unwell, it cause things to get worse for her.

I think despite everything, she was kind and caring and loved those boys and raised them right. She taught them not to be snooty, how to relate to everyone and taught them empathy and compassion. There is so much of her in those boys, especially William.

Yes, we are a little obsessed here with the Royals. They often come here so when they do, we fly the Union flag higher and our anthem changes to God Save The Queen. I think a lot of people don't realize the relationship of Canada and the royals.

I am now reminded to a photo a saw online of the Queen photobombing a girls selfie and smiling as she did it.

There is no doubt whatsoever that Diana loved the boys. They must miss their mother terribly. She wasn't the airhead that some made her out to be either. She could be a bit of a radical when she wanted. She once rather coyly remarked that "Men cannot have babies, but if they did, they would each only have one." She did love Charles but his heart lay elsewhere, as we now all know.

I was actually in the US when the news of her death broke..!! (yes, I've been there). We had just finished a family cruise holiday in the Caribbean, disembarked in Fort Lauderdale and were off to Miami for a few days before flying home. We disembarked the ship on the very day the news of Diana's death broke. Everywhere we went, as soon as anybody realised we were British it was all they wanted to talk about.

I was unaware that in Canada the national anthem changes when the Queen is present. Wow, that's amazing. I think we sometimes underestimate, or even possibly take for granted, the loyalty of the Commonwealth countries to the Crown. It's quite humbling.

This'll make you smile though..... God Save the Queen is also the National Anthem of Northern Ireland, so when there is a football match between England and Northern Ireland, the band plays GSTQ twice, once for each team. It does come across as being a bit bizarre.

I should rephrase, God Save The Queen is our Royal anthem since we are part of the commonwealth so it's played and sung only when any member of the royal family is on Canadian soil.

Canada is very loyal to the Queen. In fact, in order to become a Canadian citizen, one must pledge their allegiance to the Queen. A few immigrants did not want to do this because they did not believe in all of that so they took it to court and the Canadian Supreme Court ruled that if one does not pledge loyalty to the Queen, they cannot become Canadian citizens. I know the Queen and Prince Charles have always spoken well of Canada as being a home away from home. We'll always be united in our burning of the White House. Lol
Just don't get me started when someone refers to her as the Queen of England.

I find playing the anthem twice hilarious. In hockey if both teams are Canadian, we only play it once.

Did you enjoy America?

I haven't heard a thing about the election.

Cheers for ruining it.

I had my life just how I wanted then you had to mention politics.

That said. I definitely won't be opposing any political parties as I no longer vote.
