Thanks guys. Me and my friends always argued about this but were always too lazy (lol) to research into it. hehe. I was the one who said Ireland was also in there, but my friends insisted no.

On a related note, Great Britain is just the main island, which contains England, Wales, and Scotland.

So, the United Kingdom spans the whole of Great Britain plus part of the island Ireland, and includes many nearby outlying islands. In fact, the full name of the nation is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, I believe.

I work in Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I then go home and travel North to that part of the Republic of Ireland know as the South of Ireland.

There is no such thing as a stupid question only stupid answers.

We Irish like to keep things complicated to confuse the British

island Ireland

What? Ireland is the name of the island, just as Great Britain is the name of the larger island due east of Ireland.

The Republic of Ireland comprises the bulk of the mass of Ireland, with the rest being taken up by Northern Ireland, a country that is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (if we're going to be all technical )
