The Two Party System as it is played today in every allegedly democratic nation has entirely corrupted that very democracy.
It is nothing more than a game of Good cop/Bad cop played on the population at large, a trick of smoke and mirrors to deflect and confuse the voters.
By reducing every issue to an either/or question they remove any hope of real consideration or discussion of issues and can therefore label anyone who tries as being too extreme or outside the process to listen to.
The general public here in Oz has become jaded, dissatisfied but uncertain, and that lead to many small parties and Independents getting votes they may not have otherwise at the last election.
What was the response of the TP hacks? Did they read it as a signal to raise their game, to actually listen to their electorates for a change?
Did they heck! No, they're trying to change the electoral system yet again, to reduce the effectiveness of that system even further so that their right to rule cannot be challenged next time.
Our predecessors fought long and hard to bequeath us a fairer system of governance than what went before and their legacy has been stolen, WE took our eye off the ball, they must be spinning in their graves at our complacence and willful ignorance!
The Media is a vital co-conspirator in this theft, they have power over the TP robots and they USE it (G'day there Rupert!), further reducing our freedom and ability to make rational choices.

What is the answer, what can WE do to reclaim our stolen democracies?
Can we even wake up the madding crowd to the theft?
Is it already too late ?

You're not the only one fed up:
Jefferson County Recorder of Deeds Debbie Dunnegan called President Barack Obama "our domestic enemy" and suggested the U.S. Constitution would give the U.S. military the authority to oust the president in a coup d'état
"I cannot and do not understand why no action is being taken against our domestic enemy. I know he is supposedly the commander in chief, but the Constitution gives you the authority. What am I missing?" Dunnegan, a Republican, wrote in a since deleted Facebook post.

From down here under the planet it was a real circus to watch, it was as if the American voters were blind to one simple fact, Obama was and is a politician , with all that that implies!
Why did anyone expect him to achieve anything , or that he'd be any more effective than any other scum-sucker?
Not that I'm implying WE are any better, you need only look at the hopeless and offensive moron WE elected as our current PM, he's worse !!
Honestly, if our pollies hadn't granted themselves immunity from the law he would be doing time for his lies and abuses of the democratic ideal!

Truth be told, and I may end up catching hell for this from some people, I always thought Obama has been more about being a celebrity than a politician.

If you say nothing else on the matter, we won't pursue re-education camp.

It sure looks like that from here, he was elected for his colouration and family as much as anything else, he seemed more a novelty item that "captured" the imagination of America, you all read into his running what you dreamed of, and fantasies rarely reflect reality, do they?
Bear in mind though that I'm half a planet away and largely relying on some highly dubious sources, the Media, the Internet was so full of a million different opinions and views that it was impossible to separate the real from the idiots and the trolls, let alone those with a barrow to push.
There's an old saw about nations getting the governments they deserve, and thatt speaks well of us all, doesn't it!

In 2012 only about 58% of Americans voted. It has not been stolen we have just given it away.

Indeed, that's why in my OP I said "WE have taken our eye off the ball".
Here in Oz we have compulsory voting, not that they chase dodgers much, they don't really care enough. We get a lot of what are labeled "donkey votes", those who simply tick boxes at random or screw up their votes deliberately, but I feel that even the majority of our voters are donkey voters anyway, they follow the party line unquestioningly.
It seems to me that as long as the "average" Aussie voter gets their job, two weeks annual leave and mindless pap on TV they don't give a damn who runs the country!
I'd LOVE to find a way to effectively block all TV transmissions for a couple of months, there'd be "blood on the streets" then alright!

She's missing the fact that Obama is the first president since FDR to win both elections with a majority vote.

The narrative has been set. From a historical perspective, the current POTUS will be known for one particular thing.

I hope to God that no harm comes to him by either coup, impeachment, or assassination attempt. He will be viewed as a marytr and the racial tensions in the US will further escalate.

I'm content to allow the POTUS another 100 games of golf to finish off his term. It's the best we can hope for.

Then again - part of being a politician is being a celebrity

- but I don't disagree that there is a certain amount of "celebrity" happening

After all, in 5 years or less, he'll have another book to sell!

He will be seen as a fairly decent president.
