House of mouse!
August 30, 2014 @ 01:26:54 pm
So I'm raising mice for the place I volunteer. My two breeding females just weaned two litters (26 altogether!), and this morning, my coworker texted me saying that she found two orphaned field mice (Mother died). So Luckily my females were still lactating, so they could foster the orphans. 12 hours later they're still doing very well.

I swear after these wildies are weaned, the mamas are getting the longest vacation ever! They're fantastic mothers!

Dang, that's a lot of meeses! The enclosure they're in must squeak constantly.

Do you know what would be kind of cool to do? Create a miniature mouse obstacle course/circus for them to play around it. It'd definitely be entertaining and I'm sure the mice would enjoy it too.

When I was a kid I had gerbils and I had a "playground" for them when I'd clean their cage. A big long box - I think it was from a vacuum cleaner - with tissue boxes, TP, paper towel and wrapping paper cores, blocks of wood, apple tree twigs ...

My entire extra bedroom is for my rodents. lol! Yes, with all the kiddos at the moment, there's a lot of squeaking!

Once I save up enough, I WOULD like to get them more stuff.

I guess it'd be in bad taste if one day, you lightly pawed at the bottom of the closed door and made loud, meowing noises? It'd be one way to stop them from squeaking.

You could probably build your own from scratch easily. I don't know how handy you are with woodwork, but you could easily male a long, box-shaped enclosure for them with thin rails for them to run on and higher areas so they can look around, but not enough for them to jump out. A kid I knew did something like that for his four gerbils. They had little ramps to go up and tunnels that were just made from toilet paper rolls and paper-mache, but he lightly sprayed it with sour apple spray so they wouldn't chew on the tunnels. Although he also made "chewing rooms" that were just big rooms with small blocks of wood, rolled-up newspaper, etc... His was really cool and intricate.

So what do they do with the mice?
Sell them?
Snake food?
Experiments?

Seems like so much care for something you raise to kill. Not that I mind. I like hawks and snakes much better then mice. I'm not sure if you have a great mothering instinct or...
I actually fed one to a snake once but I tried holding it and ended up squealing like a girl and running when it snapped it's head up towards my hand. I love snakes, but I didn't like that one.
