I had a very interesting conversation last night about how media is very different worldwide. How News is worded, how it can be so biased by the Governments of the originating countries.

How "worldwide" we are given different priorities via our education and upbringing. Of course the government completely run our education systems, therefore we are rarely taught anything that is not our governments policy for us to learn.

My freind has been working in Japan for a year, shes going back real soon for another year. She was telling me about how the media and government work there and how there is a national ethic.

At first it sounded shocking but actually thinking about it, isnt patriotism the same thing?

Anyways my point being very similar to Doug's last week. About getting a whole story, getting opinions from both sides before drawing your own conclusions.

Reading through the Israel/Lebnanon threads i can see how media works, i can see how people have absolutely different views because geographically they are a long way away from each other and they are subjected to different media.

I know quite a few people on here DO take a look at the news in asia, africa, americas, australasia, europe and can draw thier own conclusions from this.

All i really want to say is, in another part of the world the same story can be told in a very different way. So please, check sources, look from all angels and please think for yourselves.

People always tell me about looking a differents sources withing America, but I've never heard of looking at different sources throughout the world. I know BBC is rater unbiased. They have a balanced perspective, at least when compared to America. However, I don't know about any other country. Sad to say, I've never heard of many of the international new sites.

I may be very, very cynical because I don't believe 99% of what the media puts out there doesn't matter where it comes from.

I would add Al Jazeera to the list for world news.

Very true Treebs!

News is told very differently in one country depending on which you listen/watch much less what is being reported in another country..

Just like politics, the media is controlled by the governments and will only give what they're able to. The rest of it is up in air and we as one person cannot ever know for sure what is what because we will never have the 'whole' story to opinionate on...

Well, coming from what I've heard. Aren't all of the reporters just saying what they've been told, like actors and the people who do write the stories are like... producers. So the news is a TV shows! Does this mean the world is a giant TV show?? So if the world is a TV how, who is watching...? Holy s***, they where right......

I need to get out more....

It's been some time since I've posted something humorous. Too long

If only things were so simple as they were 12 years ago....

Today, speed to market (airwaves, 0010110101's) seems to take priority over accuracy. Hand in hand with sensationalism. (aka click-bait)

Next important is quantity ...

I was going to start another thread on how ridiculous some of the questions are from reporters, especially during big news events like this (Tx shooting)

"Listen" to the questions being asked, and how.

In prior events, you hear them ask stupid, obvious questions like "Is this the scariest thing you've seen?!?"
...Like maybe someone would answer .. "No, I saw the movie "The Exorcist" and that was worse"

Or sometimes you hear reporters try to plant terms, asking by-standers: "Wow! That fish is as big as a canoe, isn't it?" Followed by a headline "Witness says Canoe Sized Fish ...."

... And then there is Point of View:

FoxNews headline: Writer touted by CNN as 'Journalist of the Year' forced to resign for fabricating stories

CNN Headline: Germany's Der Spiegel says star reporter Claas Relotius wrote fake stories 'on a grand scale'

To clarify:

His work had received awards from CNN, but a CNN spokesperson said, "Relotius was not associated with CNN, he never worked for the company and never had anything published on CNN platforms."
...
He also penned a feature for Swiss magazine Reportagen, for which he received two CNN Journalist Awards in 2014, including Journalist of the Year. The CNN Journalist Awards were for German-language journalism and decided by an independent jury. The last awards were given in 2015.

Fun conversation.

I remember most if not all the people.

Looks like I didn't participate in this discussion... I expect I was just watching and getting a few laughs... though by page 7 i was off on a year (well really 15 months) long "recreational" trip that started in the Washington, DC area and ended in Santiago, Chile (that part was actually recreation)... with a 10 month stop over in a certain hot, dry and violent part of the world.

Anyway, it's too bad (to my way of thinking) that so many members of TFS didn't stick around to continue this discussion to today...

Oh well... such is life.
