Because (from your link):

That 2.4% "...would reduce the number of people living in poverty by 4.6 million."

2.4% may sound like a trivial improvement, but 4.6 million does not sound so trivial.

You left out the important part.

That is quite possible.

Would it be (from the link): "A higher minimum wage will lead to a significant boost in incomes for the worst off in the bottom 30th percent of income, while having no impact on the median household." ?

Feel free to share the most important part.

I do not know where the author of the article got his information. Perhaps he was incorrect.

However, in the article he specifically stated that:

"Most employees working at or near the minimum wage are not the heads of poor households.

They are typically either young (up to about 25) or are second-earners, in which case their households do not rely exclusively on them for income."

This seems plausible to me.

The article does not, however, directly say, nor (IMO) does it imply, that the low income earners wages are not essential income. In fact, with the young (up to 25) it clearly would have to be essential income. In addition, particularly in today's economy, I think the clear assumptions that that the income from the second-earners is also essential income.

I already said this when I wrote: Instead, it would suggest... (that they are) ...an important part of the family unit and therefore very important to the country as a whole.

My point was that their income and jobs are important and are not based on poor life decisions, and that they are not "children" or "morons".

I'm sorry to have continually been unclear. I was simply stating at that point where I had drawn my conclusions, since you said you didn't know where that came from. I understood everything you put in this post before you made this post.

I also was only commenting your comments and the stuff you quoted. I didn't open any links.

Here is a somewhat older article though, with probably more details on the demographics.

Either way, I prefer to think in terms of low wage workers vs minimum wage workers. The article I am linking states that minimum wage workers are not more likely than other hourly workers to be single parents. That may be so, but how does that compare between minimum wage and people making twice minimum wage?

I didn't realize I was arguing with you.

I actually agreed with some of the points in your links.

But, OK.

I honestly feel like you are arguing with me when ultimately what I have written mostly agrees with your points.

One study of the effect of raising the minimum wage 10% says that it would reduce the number of people living in poverty 2.4%.

That is such a trivial improvement, I must wonder why they would even publish he result. I suppose they need to fill the space with something.

Washington Post

you missed the major point of that article all together.

And ok, I've read the article in the OP. It doesn't say that raising the minimum wage is a bad idea, it says raising it drastically, quickly, and very locally is a bad idea. I tend to agree.

I think I've been trying to make my statements in too hurried a manner. Yes, I realized eventually that we agreed on some points. Anyway not trying to argue. Just constantly being called away.

I totally quoted the wrong post to reply to you. I'm not trying to be argumentative. I swear.
I misunderstood at first what you were saying, then tried to explain myself. I do see how it reads as argumentative.

I think I'm mostly frustrated with other stuff and not coming across well here.

You take things in directions that people don't intend, and I think it's because you presume that a lot of people think the way you think they think.

Ha ha...unfortunately I would have to agree that this is what is going on most of the time because I have noticed people I deal with in person often times interrupting and responding to me in manner which is a bit underestimating.

@Eaglebauer Said

I'm not saying they have to, I'm saying that if you have the ability to better your situation and don't, you really don't have a lot of room to complain.

This is true but you are possibly only looking at twenty percent of those poor bums holding up signs and even then they, more than likely, don't realize they have profitable talents that are in need.

But many of us out here have skills that the majority studied for. How many 'Soon to be rock bands & singers' have you known in your life?

How many PC techs have you ran into?

Ha! Good God! With the net and availability of information and affordable software have you been to sites like Desura or Shiny Loot and seen all of the amateurs turning out games?

And what about journalism and reviews nowadays? I just tune into some nobody on YouTube doing it better than long established news and hobby sites. xD

You also have to consider those bums holding signs might not get hired a lot of places because they often go off in a conniption talking back to the voices in their head forgetting that others are watching....Like the HR rep at their interview.

I'm one of very few people who could explain to a employer that their schizophrenic employee is harmless and only result of society not coming forward and sharing science information in a direct, honest and comprehensible manner.

Most of us came into life with poor or middle class parents.
Mine were "dirt poor". Growing up, meals generally consisted of things we grew in the back yard or whatever Dad could catch in his "free time" between his three jobs.

So let's say someone woke you up out of deep, non-existent, sleep and asked if you wanted to suffer and strive and watch your poor old dad cry as he worked himself to the bones...

...wouldn't you question that entities' sanity if not its agenda?

Yeah, I know an easy life would grow stale real quick - But many people out there have it harder than a challenge should be. The Middle East for example....

@Pcptrvanion Said

MOST successful people got to their position in life through careful choices and hard work.

I agree but with a bit of an edit "Careful choices as to where they applied to and made the effort to work hard."

@Pcptrvanion Said

Really?
If you don't get what you want just pout and quit?
Sounds like the logic of a six year old.

I don't want nothing excessive. I'm happy with an upper-poor lifestyle.

However when I'm running into soup kitchens for donations it is demonstration of excessive poverty due to a broken Government template which a six year old could easily fix.

That is how it is in our household. I have one of those 'minimum wage jobs' and hubby is a Mason. He makes more then double what I do. His income pays the bills and mine takes care of the food and incidentals.

I also have a college degree, but could not get a job in that field(not for lack of trying I assure you), because I didn't have any 'work experience'. Well, I need a job in that field to GET 'work experience'.

All the information is out there. But again, you have to leave your basement and goto the bookshop and find it. Then you will have to learn to rad, then you have to read it and apply to what you know about life.

gain, your too lazy to find stuff out yourself. And now people writing books isn't enough, you expect them to come to your basement and translate it into your snarls and growls so you can understand.

Seriously, you gotta learn to do stuff for yourself. Like changing your nappies, one day you may have to do that yourself as well.

When you learnt to walk (im assuming you did), you did that all by yourself. When you learnt to speak, you did the hard work, you just had abit of guidance. What changed in your life that made you expect everyone to be your b**** and do everything for you.

The vocabulary I learn on TFS

Ad Hominem <---- You should make this your handle.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem

It is compulsory to attend school for eleven years.

Although a firmly established explanation has not yet been discovered the general theory should be presented in classrooms.

I would have to say that the phenomena is just as important as spelling and arithmetic and warming children up to the peculiar science would save them shock and confusion much later in life.
